Chad passport photo requirements
The 40 × 40 mm photo rules set by Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés (ANATS), Chad for the Chad passport, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Chad passport photo?
The only passport photo size any Chadian official page read gives is 40 x 40 mm: the Berlin embassy lists four biometric identity photos of that size, not scanned ones, with an application they send themselves. No page read gives a background colour, head size or file rules. ANATS, the national agency for secure documents, issues the passport; the Berlin embassy states it does not.
Chadian passports are produced by ANATS, the Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés. Its website describes it as responsible for producing, managing and securing official documents such as passports and identity cards, and lists the passport and the national ID card under "first application or renewal". The site is a script-driven app whose detailed pages show no text to an automated reader, so its own checklist and photo rules could not be read for this guide.
Embassies take part only at the edges of the process. The Berlin embassy says it does not issue passports or national identity cards. It lists the documents for an application, including four biometric identity photos, and asks applicants who are already enrolled and hold a national identification number (NNI) to send the application themselves. The Washington embassy has published a notice that an official delegation from Chad in charge of passport and licence renewals has arrived in the United States, with the forms online to fill in beforehand.
Berlin is the only source that states a passport photo size, and its page was last modified in August 2022. No Chadian page read supports 50 x 50 mm. The Paris embassy's published consular list gives 4x4 photos for visas and the consular card, but passports are not among the services it lists.

Key requirements
- Four biometric photos of 40 x 40 mm
The Berlin embassy lists "four biometric identity photos (no scanned photos), 40/40 mm format" among the documents for an ordinary passport or national ID card application (translated from French). No other Chadian page read gives a passport photo size.
- The embassy does not issue the passport
Berlin says the embassy does not make passports or national ID cards. Applicants who are already enrolled and hold an NNI must send their passport application themselves, with the fees.
- Enrolment comes first
Berlin says a person with no NNI and no passport, but with at least one official document proving Chadian nationality, can ask the embassy for a laissez-passer to travel to N'Djamena and be enrolled there.
- Delegations from Chad abroad
The Washington embassy announced that an official delegation in charge of passport and licence renewals had arrived in the United States. It says the forms are online and should be filled in beforehand, with all supporting documents brought to the meeting. The notice is undated and gives no photo rule.
- The application form asks for no photo size
The ordinary passport application form that the Washington embassy distributes asks for the type of request (first application, replacement or renewal), the NNI, personal details and the payment receipt. Its text names no photo size or background.
- Paris lists 4x4 photos for other services
The Paris embassy's consular list gives two 4x4 photos for the consular card and for visas, and two identity photos for a laissez-passer. The unit is not stated, and passports are not on the list.
- Background and head size are not published
No Chadian page read gives a background colour, head height, eye position, recency or glasses rule for a passport photo. The Berlin list asks for biometric photos, which is the nearest to a quality rule.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Ask the embassy or ANATS office handling your case which photo format it wants before you print.
- Bring four biometric identity photos of 40 x 40 mm if you apply by the route the Berlin embassy describes.
- Use real prints, not scans or photocopies, for that route.
- Have your NNI from enrolment before you send a passport application.
- Fill in and sign the ordinary passport application form completely.
Don't
- Do not assume 50 x 50 mm: no Chadian page read asks for that size.
- Do not send a scanned or photocopied photo to the Berlin embassy.
- Do not take the 4x4 photos of the Paris visa list as a passport rule.
- Do not expect an embassy to print your passport; the Berlin embassy says it does not.
Sample photos
How a Chad passport photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 40 × 40 mm and background colour.
Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Glasses
No Chadian page read for this guide sets a rule on glasses. ICAO's photograph guidelines, an international baseline and not a Chadian rule, say that if you wear glasses the photograph must show your eyes clearly, with no flash reflection off the glasses and no tinted lenses, and that frames must not cover any part of your eyes.
Headwear and religious dress
No Chadian page read sets a rule on headwear. ICAO's photograph guidelines, which are a baseline and not a Chadian rule, say head coverings are not permitted except for religious reasons, and that the face must be clearly shown from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, with both edges of the face visible.
Printed and digital photos
The one published instruction is for printed photos. Berlin lists four biometric identity photos and adds in brackets that scanned photos are not accepted, which points to real prints. No Chadian page read gives a pixel size, a file size or a digital upload channel for the passport.
A digital photo can be cropped to a chosen size and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter. Check the size with your embassy first, because the only size published is 40 x 40 mm and the Paris consular list uses a different one for other services.
Where to submit the photo
The passport is produced by ANATS in Chad. The ANATS website says it handles first applications and renewals of the passport and the ID card, and Berlin says enrolment takes place in Chad, naming N'Djamena. Abroad, contact your embassy: it can issue a laissez-passer for travel to N'Djamena for enrolment, and the Washington embassy has announced a visiting delegation for renewals.
Berlin asks those who are already enrolled to send their application themselves, with the forms, a birth certificate copy, copies of three witnesses' national ID cards (one a close relative), proof of profession, the photos and the fee. Washington points to forms published on its website. The Paris embassy's published consular list does not include passports, so ask it directly before travelling.
