Quick answer

What size is the China national computer rank examination photo?

The NCRE registration photo is a recent colour ID photo, facing the camera and without a hat, uploaded as a JPG of 20 to 200 KB. Guangdong, Shenzhen and Shanghai set a minimum of 144 x 192 pixels (width x height) and an image area of 33 x 48 mm (1.30 x 1.89 in), with the head taking 7/10 of the height. A candidate whose photo fails the rules cannot sit the exam.

The National Computer Rank Examination (全国计算机等级考试, NCRE) is China's national test of computer skills. It is run by the National Education Examinations Authority (NEEA, 教育部教育考试院), was approved by the former State Education Commission, and has four levels, from basic office software to engineer-level subjects. It is taken on a computer and held twice a year, in late March and late September, and anyone may enter regardless of age, job or education.

Candidates register online on the NEEA's NCRE registration website, but each provincial examination authority sets its own dates and procedure, so you choose your province and a test centre when you sign up. The photo is uploaded at that stage, while you fill in your personal details, after creating an ETEST passport account that works across NEEA exams.

The NEEA's own candidate notice does not publish photo specifications. The figures on this page come from the September 2026 registration documents of the Guangdong Education Examinations Authority and the Shenzhen admissions office, which use the same standard, and from the Shanghai Municipal Educational Examinations Authority, whose notice gives the same proportions. Other provinces publish their own notices, so check the one for the province where you register.

Key requirements

  • Head 7/10, space 1/10

The framing rule divides the image: 1/10 of the height empty above the head, 7/10 for the head and 1/5 for the shoulders, with 1/10 of the width left free on each side. Shenzhen and Shanghai both print this proportion.

  • A minimum, not a fixed size

The standard gives 192 x 144 pixels (height x width) as the smallest image accepted. A larger image also meets it, provided the file stays between 20 and 200 KB and is saved as a .jpg.

  • No snapshots or beauty filters

Guangdong's rules exclude everyday snapshots and photos run through beauty filters. The upload has to be a proper ID-style picture of you, facing the camera.

  • A failed photo means no exam

In Guangdong, candidates whose photo does not meet the rules, or who upload none, are not allowed to take the exam. Shanghai adds that you cannot sit the exam if the photo cannot be confirmed as you.

  • On the admission ticket and certificate

Shanghai uses the uploaded photo as the admission ticket photo, and Guangdong states that it is used for the certificate of qualification. Since the September 2023 session, Shanghai says, electronic certificates have replaced paper ones.

  • Face recognition at entry

The NEEA notice says test centres may verify identity by face recognition, with a manual check offered as an alternative. Guangdong states that candidates enter through face-recognition identity checks.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Upload a recent colour ID photo that faces the camera
  • Save it as a .jpg between 20 and 200 KB
  • Leave about one tenth of the height clear above your head
  • Include your shoulders in the bottom fifth of the image
  • Read your provincial authority's notice before uploading

Don't

  • Do not use an everyday snapshot
  • Do not apply beauty or smoothing filters
  • Do not wear a cap or hat
  • Do not go below 144 pixels wide or 192 pixels high
  • Do not skip the photo step when registering

Sample photos

How a China national computer rank examination photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 33 × 48 mm and background colour.

Correct
Open-mouth smile
Head tilted
Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Headwear and religious dress

The standard calls for a 免冠 photo, meaning one taken bareheaded, so remove hats and caps. The Guangdong, Shenzhen and Shanghai notices do not mention religious head coverings or glasses; if you need to wear either, ask the test centre where you register.

Babies and children

There is no minimum age. The NEEA states that registration is open regardless of age, occupation or education, and the same photo rules apply to every candidate. You register with a valid identity document: a resident identity card (a temporary one is accepted), a Mainland travel permit for Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan residents, a residence permit for those residents, or a passport.

Only a digital file is needed. The 48 x 33 mm figure in the notices (height x width) describes the image area, not a print you hand in. A photo taken with a phone or camera can be cropped to the required proportions, resized to at least 144 x 192 pixels and saved as a JPG of 20 to 200 KB.

Shanghai's 2026 notice prints the minimum as 192 mm x 144 mm, which appears to be a slip for pixels: the same notice gives the image area separately as 48 mm x 33 mm, and Guangdong's rules give 192 x 144 as a pixel count.

Where to submit the photo

Register on the NEEA's NCRE registration website, choose your province and then a test centre. Each province opens registration on its own dates, which its examination authority announces. Guangdong and Shanghai both require payment within 24 hours of registering, or the registration lapses, and Guangdong treats payment as confirmation that your details are final.

Admission tickets are printed from the registration website or by the test centre. On exam day, bring the ticket and the identity document you registered with, and arrive at least 20 minutes before the start.

How to get your China national computer rank examination photo

  1. Check the official requirements. Read the official specification for the China national computer rank examination: 33 × 48 mm print, 144 × 192 px digital file. Check the rules on pose, expression, glasses and headwear below.
  2. Take the photo. Follow the key requirements: head 7/10, space 1/10; a minimum, not a fixed size; no snapshots or beauty filters; a failed photo means no exam.
  3. Prepare a print or digital file. Only a digital file is needed. The 48 x 33 mm figure in the notices (height x width) describes the image area, not a print you hand in.
  4. Submit the photo with your application. Register on the NEEA's NCRE registration website, choose your province and then a test centre. Each province opens registration on its own dates, which its examination authority announces.

China national computer rank examination photo FAQ

At least 144 pixels wide and 192 pixels high, saved as a JPG of 20 to 200 KB. The Guangdong, Shenzhen and Shanghai notices describe the image area as 33 mm wide and 48 mm high, with the head taking 7/10 of the height.

The Guangdong, Shenzhen and Shanghai notices do not set a background colour. They ask for a recent colour ID photo, taken bareheaded and facing the camera. If the notice for your own province names a colour, follow it.

No. Guangdong's rules exclude everyday snapshots and photos edited with beauty filters, and Shanghai warns that a candidate whose photo cannot be confirmed as their own will not be able to sit the exam.

In Guangdong, a candidate with a non-compliant photo, or no photo at all, is not allowed to take the exam. Prepare a suitable photo before you register, because Guangdong treats your details as final once you have paid.

Guangdong says the uploaded photo is used for the certificate of qualification. Candidates who qualify can download an electronic certificate from the NEEA's website, which the NEEA has offered since 2022, and Shanghai says paper certificates stopped from the September 2023 session.

It appears to be a typing slip. Guangdong and Shenzhen give 192 x 144 (height x width) as the minimum pixel size, and Shanghai's own notice lists the image area separately as 48 mm x 33 mm. A 192 mm image would be far larger than any ID photo.

No printed photo is listed. On exam day you need your admission ticket and the identity document you registered with, and the NEEA asks candidates to arrive at least 20 minutes early for identity checks.
