Quick answer

What are the Czech Republic firearms licence photo requirements?

No photo is needed for a Czech firearms licence any more. Since 1 January 2026, under the Weapons and Ammunition Act (No. 90/2024 Coll.), the zbrojní oprávnění that replaced the zbrojní průkaz is an electronic record in the Central Firearms Register, with no card. You prove it with a zbrojní list extract, which carries no photo, shown together with your ID card or passport. The application asks only for a medical report.

Until the end of 2025, Czech gun owners carried a zbrojní průkaz, a physical firearms licence card. Act No. 90/2024 Coll. on weapons and ammunition, in force since 1 January 2026, replaced it with the zbrojní oprávnění (firearms authorisation). Paper firearms licences, weapon cards and similar documents lost their validity at the start of 2026. Holders may keep them as souvenirs and do not have to hand them in, and they became holders of the new authorisation without applying again.

The new authorisation exists only as an entry in the Central Firearms Register (CRZ). It is issued by the regional police directorate for your place of residence, in two levels, general and extended, and its validity is not limited in time. With no card there is nothing to put a photo on, and the police list a medical report as the only attachment to the application.

The European Firearms Pass, needed to take a weapon to other EU countries, is the one firearms document that is still issued on paper. Its application form asks for your identity details and the weapons to be entered, not for a photograph.

Key requirements

  • No card, no photo

The Ministry of the Interior states that from 1 January 2026 most paper documents for firearms were abolished and that authorisations are kept purely electronically in the Central Firearms Register. The old zbrojní průkaz cards, which held the photo, can no longer be used to prove anything.

  • Medical report is the attachment

The police say the applicant must attach a report on medical fitness, issued by the registered general practitioner, or for applicants under 18 also by a paediatric practitioner. Holders must show a new report every five years. No photo is listed.

  • Checks first, then the exam

The police check residence, age, legal capacity, integrity, reliability and health. When everything but competence is met, they record in the register that you may sit the exam, which you must pass within 12 months at a listed examination range. Passing makes you a holder.

  • Proving the authorisation

You can prove it through electronic access with a verified identity, by showing a zbrojní list together with your ID card or passport, through a check by the police or a licensed dealer in the register, or with a Czech European Firearms Pass that lists the weapon. Carrying the list is not compulsory.

  • The zbrojní list has no photo

The Digital and Information Agency describes the zbrojní list as an official, verified extract from the register at a precise date and time. It can be full or partial, it does not contain the holder's photograph, and it proves anything only together with a valid identity document.

  • European Firearms Pass on paper

A regional police directorate issues the pass for 5 years and can extend it by another 5. You apply through the Ministry's filing portal, a data box, signed e-mail, or in person or by post at any regional directorate. The service page lists your identity details and the weapons as the content of the request.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Get a medical report from your registered GP before applying.
  • Apply through the Ministry's portal, a data box or a police contact point.
  • Carry your ID card or passport when you show a zbrojní list.
  • Book your exam at a range on the police list.
  • Renew your medical report every five years.

Don't

  • Do not send a photo with the application.
  • Do not rely on an old zbrojní průkaz card after 2025.
  • Do not use a zbrojní list without an identity document.
  • Do not let the 12-month exam window run out.

Babies and children

The general authorisation is open to adults and the extended one from the age of 21. A young person may get the general authorisation from 15 if they attend a secondary school whose field includes hunting, gunsmithing, sport shooting, security or military studies, or a school that offers sport shooting outside lessons, or if they belong to a sport-shooting club that holds a firearms licence.

In that case the written consent of a legal representative, guardian or tutor must be attached, and the police can suspend the authorisation if that consent, or the school's or club's, is withdrawn. As for adults, no photo is involved.

Neither a print nor a digital photo is part of the procedure. You file the application, attach the medical report, sit the exam in person and become a holder when the police record the result in the register. Application forms are no longer set by decree, and a free-form request is possible, though the police advise against it.

The zbrojní list comes free as an electronic extract through the Citizen Portal to your data box, or on paper for a fee at a Czech POINT contact point or a police unit. Neither version has a photo. In 2025, the Ministry still told holders renewing an expiring card that they needed a current ID photo; that applied only to the old card.

Where to submit the photo

The regional police directorate for your place of residence decides: your permanent residence address if you are a Czech citizen, or your reported residence address if you are a foreign national. You can apply through the Ministry of the Interior's filing portal with a verified citizen identity, by data box, by e-mail signed with a recognised electronic signature, or at any contact point of the police department for weapons and security material.

Requests for a European Firearms Pass go to any regional police directorate, in person, by post or through the same electronic channels.

Czech Republic firearms licence photo FAQ

No. Since 1 January 2026 the zbrojní oprávnění has replaced the zbrojní průkaz and exists only in the Central Firearms Register, without a card. The police list the medical report as the one document you attach to the application.

No. Paper firearms licences and weapon cards lost validity at the start of 2026. You do not have to return the card and may keep it, but you cannot use it as proof. Existing holders automatically became holders of the new authorisation.

Through electronic access with a verified identity, with a zbrojní list shown together with your ID card or passport, by having the police or a licensed dealer check the register, or with a Czech European Firearms Pass listing the weapon. Police can verify the register after checking your identity document.

No. The Digital and Information Agency states that the zbrojní list does not contain the holder's photograph, which is why it proves the authorisation only together with a valid identity document. You can get it electronically through the Citizen Portal or on paper at a Czech POINT.

Neither the government portal's service page nor the Ministry's page for the pass mentions a photograph. The request lists your identity details and the weapons to be entered, and is filed with a regional police directorate. The pass is valid for 5 years and is the only firearms document still issued on paper.

One of the conditions is a place of residence in the Czech Republic. For foreign nationals, the competent regional police directorate is the one for the reported residence address. The other conditions, such as integrity, reliability, health and the exam, apply equally.
