Spain gun licence photo requirements
The 26 × 32 mm photo rules set by Guardia Civil for the Spain gun licence, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Spain gun licence photo?
Spanish firearms licences (types B, C, D, E and F) need no photo: the Guardia Civil and Ministry of the Interior document lists include none. Photos are needed for the European Firearms Pass (Tarjeta Europea de Armas de Fuego), which shows the holder in a carné-size photo, taken from the front with the head uncovered. The Guardia Civil asks for two carné-size photos with the application; the Interior page lists one photo per 10 firearms on the pass.
Firearms in Spain are controlled by the Guardia Civil. Licences are requested at the Intervención de Armas y Explosivos for your home address, and for types D, E and F holders of a digital signature can also file through the Guardia Civil electronic office. The documents for licence types B (pistols and revolvers), D (rifled long guns for big game), E (sport shooting and shotguns) and F (shooting ranges) are a psychophysical aptitude certificate, criminal-record and gender-violence record checks, proof of identity, the fee and papers specific to each licence. None of these lists asks for a photograph, and the Guardia Civil forms checked have no photo box.
A photo is needed for one firearms document: the European Firearms Pass, which Spanish residents carry when they travel with their guns to other EU countries. ITC 5 of the Arms Regulation, Royal Decree 137/1993, sets its model and says the holder's photo is carné size, taken from the front and bareheaded. The pass is granted by the head of the Guardia Civil Comandancia of your province, lasts five years and can be renewed while you still own the guns it covers.

Key requirements
- No photo for licences B to F
The Guardia Civil pages for licences B, D, E and F and the Ministry of the Interior list for licences B to F ask for no photograph. The type E renewal form and the generic Intervención de Armas application form have no photo box either.
- Photos are for the European Firearms Pass
The Guardia Civil asks for two carné-size photographs and the fee receipt (form 790) with the pass application. The Interior page lists one photo for every 10 firearms you want entered on the pass.
- Frontal and bareheaded
ITC 5 of Royal Decree 137/1993 states that the holder's photo is carné size, taken from the front, with the head uncovered.
- Carné size, no millimetres given
The Arms Regulation does not define carné size. For the DNI, Spain's regulation sets 32 x 26 mm with the height first, so 26 mm wide and 32 mm high.
- Apply where your guns are documented
The pass is requested at the Intervención de Armas for your home address. You must already hold the licences and documents for the guns it will list.
- Arms cards and minors' authorisations
Category 4 arms cards from your town council and the special authorisation for minors (AEM) list no photo either.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Bring two carné-size photos when you apply for the European Firearms Pass.
- Face the camera directly with your head uncovered.
- File the request at the Intervención de Armas for your home address.
- Pay the fee on form 790 and bring the receipt.
- Ask the Intervención how many photos it needs if the pass will list more than 10 guns.
Don't
- Do not order photos for a licence B, D, E or F application.
- Do not wear a hat or cap in the Firearms Pass photo.
- Do not turn your head or pose in profile.
- Do not travel with your guns in other EU countries without the pass.
Sample photos

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Glasses
Neither the Arms Regulation nor the Guardia Civil pages say anything about glasses. The only pose rules for the European Firearms Pass photo are a frontal view and an uncovered head, and the licences themselves take no photo at all.
Headwear and religious dress
ITC 5 asks for the holder to be photographed "descubierto", meaning bareheaded, so take off hats, caps and hoods for the European Firearms Pass photo. The regulation does not mention an exception for religious head coverings.
Babies and children
Minors aged 14 to 17 may use certain hunting and sport-shooting guns under a special authorisation for minors (AEM), always supervised by an adult licence holder. The request is signed by the minor and by the parent or guardian, and the Interior page lists criminal-record certificates, the parent's authorisation, a psychophysical aptitude report and the fee, with no photo. The authorisation lasts until the holder turns 18 without renewal.
Printed and digital photos
The Guardia Civil page for the European Firearms Pass describes paper photos handed in with the application form; it mentions no upload. If you start from a digital image, it can be cropped to carné size and printed on photo paper, for example on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter.
Licences D, E and F can be filed online through the Guardia Civil electronic office if you have a digital signature. No photo is part of those files.
Where to submit the photo
Licence applications go to the Intervención de Armas y Explosivos of the Guardia Civil for your home address, where you can book a cita previa, or online for types D, E and F with a digital signature. First applications for D, E and F also need the certificate of passing the training tests.
The European Firearms Pass is requested at the same Intervención on the official application form, with the photos and the fee receipt. Category 4 arms cards are granted by the mayor of the municipality where you live; type A applicants prove they are at least 14 with a DNI or equivalent document.
