Mauritania visa photo requirements
The photo rules set by Agence Nationale du Registre des Populations et des Titres Sécurisés (ANRPTS) for the Mauritania visa, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What are the Mauritania visa photo requirements?
Mauritania issues visas online only. Since 5 January 2025 travellers who need a visa apply on the ANRPTS portal and board with the approved e-visa. The form offers stays of 30, 90 or 360 days and needs a passport valid for at least six months. No official page gives a photo size, pixel size, file size or format for the upload, and embassies no longer issue visas.
Mauritanian visas are handled by the Agence Nationale du Registre des Populations et des Titres Sécurisés (ANRPTS). From 5 January 2025 a traveller who needs a visa must obtain an electronic authorisation before boarding, and the Mauritanian embassy in Paris says the application form is available exclusively on the ANRPTS site, in its visa section. The Spanish embassy in Nouakchott says visas must now be requested in advance through the same site, and adds that they can no longer be obtained at Mauritanian embassies and consulates abroad.
The portal's English form runs through five steps: visa options, passport, traveller, details and review. The first step offers three packages (30 days, 90 days and 360 days) and says all visas are issued electronically and allow entry through every international port of entry. The Mauritanian foreign ministry describes the next step as completing the form with your personal information and the documents required (translated from French), without listing the documents.
No public page gives photo rules for the form. If the form states any when you reach the document step, follow them rather than a size quoted elsewhere. Biometric data is captured at the border on arrival.

Key requirements
- Apply on the official portal only
The Paris embassy says the visa form is available exclusively on the ANRPTS site. The request page sits on that agency's own gov.mr domain, and the Spanish embassy quotes the same address. A site outside the ANRPTS domain is not the government portal.
- Five steps, three stay lengths
The form moves from visa options to passport, traveller, details and review. The visa options are 30, 90 and 360 days. After submission the request is reviewed and, once validated, you receive an e-visa tied to your request number.
- Passport valid for six months
ANRPTS requires a passport valid for at least 6 months and bars holders of a passport with less validity from entering. The Spanish embassy adds that the departure date on the authorisation must be at least six months before the passport expires.
- Biometrics are taken on arrival
ANRPTS says the capture of biometric data is carried out when you reach the crossing point. The Spanish embassy says you show your confirmation code at the border for the biometric capture and the payment of the fee.
- Embassies no longer issue visas
The Spanish embassy, dated 3 January 2025, says visas can no longer be obtained at Mauritanian embassies and consulates abroad. The UK government says the Mauritanian Embassy in London does not issue visas.
- Fees are paid in cash on arrival
The UK government says e-visa fees are paid on arrival in exact cash in euros or US dollars. The Spanish embassy also describes cash payment at the border.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Open the application only from the ANRPTS site, a gov.mr address.
- Check that your passport has at least six months left after your stay.
- Read any photo instruction on the form before you crop or resize the picture.
- Keep your request number and the approved e-visa.
- Print the e-visa or keep a copy to show when boarding.
- Apply well in advance of travel.
Don't
- Do not pay an e-visa fee online: the UK government says it is paid in cash on arrival.
- Do not travel with a passport that has less than six months of validity.
- Do not expect to buy a visa at a Mauritanian embassy.
- Do not trust photo sizes quoted by commercial sites; no official page gives one.
Glasses
No official page read for this guide states a rule on glasses for the e-visa photo. The portal publishes no photo rules on the pages that load without filling in the form, so follow any instruction the form itself gives.
Headwear and religious dress
No official page read states a rule on head coverings for the e-visa photo. Any instruction on the form itself is the only place where such a rule could be given.
Printed and digital photos
The application is digital from start to finish: you complete the form, attach the documents it asks for and wait for the review. Nothing printed is sent anywhere. The only printout is the approved e-visa, which ANRPTS says the visitor can print and use to board.
No official page gives a pixel size, file size or format for the picture. When the form names a size, a digital photo can be cropped and resized to it. Do not rely on 35 x 45 mm or 480 x 640 pixels without that official confirmation.
Where to submit the photo
Submit the request on the ANRPTS visa page; the English form is at the portal's visa request address and there is a French and Arabic version. The agency's contact address for help is on its site.
You do not submit anything at an embassy. At the border you show your confirmation code so that your biometric data can be captured and the fee paid. The ANRPTS site also lists long-term visa requests of three, six or twelve months made by employers, which go through the competent authorities.
