Quick answer

What size is the Togo visa photo?

The Togo e-Visa takes one recent identity photo, uploaded to the Togo Voyage platform. It must measure 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in), with your face filling 70 to 80% of the picture, on a white background, as a JPG or PNG of up to 3 MB. Use a colour photo no more than six months old, natural and unretouched, bare-headed, with a neutral expression and mouth closed.

Togo Voyage, at voyage.gouv.tg, is the government's platform for entry formalities: the immigration form, the visa application and the online payment. The Togolese visa is applied for and issued only online. The platform says no visa is issued on arrival at the airport, and its FAQ says embassies no longer take visa applications unless the platform cannot be reached.

There are four visa types: tourist (also used for business visits), immigration, professional and courtesy. Each one lists the same photo requirement, one recent identity photo, uploaded with a scan of the first three pages of your passport. Visa extensions are handled by the Direction Générale de la Documentation Nationale (DGDN) in Lomé. The platform's procedure page says nationals of all African countries are exempt from the visa.

Togo Voyage is moving to a new version, which publishes the size and the upload rules: 35 x 45 mm, face at 70 to 80%, white background, JPG or PNG of up to 3 MB. The detailed photo criteria are still published in the FAQ of the original platform.

FAQ (Liste des critères de la photo d'identité)[4]

Key requirements

  • Exact size and framing

The new platform says the photo must measure exactly 35 mm wide by 45 mm high, with the face taking up between 70% and 80% of it. The head must appear in full and sit in the centre.

  • White background

The upload form and the procedure page ask for a white background. The original FAQ describes it as light, even and plain, with no gradient, so plain white meets both.

  • Natural and unretouched

The photo must be in colour, sharp, natural-looking and not retouched. Light should be even: no under- or over-exposure, no shadows and no reflections.

  • Straight pose

Face the camera with your eyes level, shoulders straight and head upright. Keep a neutral expression, look straight ahead and close your mouth.

  • Bare head, face fully visible

The FAQ asks for a bare head, with the whole face and both eyes fully visible. It publishes no exception for religious headwear.

  • JPG or PNG, 3 MB maximum

The visa form accepts the identity photo as a JPG or PNG file of up to 3 MB. The separate photo-check tool takes PNG, JPG or PDF of up to 5 MB.

  • A non-compliant photo costs time

The platform warns that a photo that does not meet the requirements can lead to the application being rejected or delayed. A refused application must be filed again and is not refunded.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Crop the photo to 35 x 45 mm proportions.
  • Fill 70 to 80% of the frame with your face.
  • Stand in front of a plain white wall.
  • Light your face evenly, without shadows.
  • Save the file as JPG or PNG under 3 MB.
  • Run the photo through the platform's photo check before you submit.

Don't

  • Do not retouch the photo or apply filters.
  • Do not use a photo older than six months.
  • Do not wear a hat, cap or head covering.
  • Do not smile with an open mouth or look away.
  • Do not upload a shadowed or gradient background.

Sample photos

How a Togo visa photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 35 × 45 mm, head height and background colour.

Correct
Open-mouth smile
Head tilted
Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

Glasses are not banned. The Togo Voyage criteria ask only that they cause no distracting reflections and no shadows, and the eyes must remain fully visible.

If the lenses catch a reflection that you cannot get rid of, take the glasses off for the picture. Tinted lenses are not mentioned, but they would hide the eyes, which must stay fully visible.

Headwear and religious dress

The photo criteria require a bare head ("tête nue"), with the face and both eyes fully visible. Neither the original FAQ nor the new platform publishes an exception for religious or medical head coverings.

If you wear a head covering for religious reasons, ask the Togo Voyage support service before you apply, since the published rules do not address it.

Babies and children

Togo makes no distinction between adults and minors for visas. A child travelling to Togo needs a separate passport and a separate visa application, made through a user account that a parent or guardian creates in the child's name. The visa costs the same as an adult's.

The published photo criteria contain no exception for babies or young children: the same 35 x 45 mm size, white background, open eyes and neutral pose apply to every applicant.

The e-Visa is fully digital. You upload one photo file to the application; no printed photo is needed, and the visa is emailed to you. The form asks for a JPG or PNG of up to 3 MB and recommends 35 x 45 mm, but gives no pixel dimensions.

The new platform has a free photo check that tells you whether a photo is compliant before you submit. Its sample page even suggests using a smartphone app if you have no suitable identity photo, so a phone picture is fine if it meets the criteria. A digital photo can be cropped to the 35 x 45 mm shape and saved at a size under the 3 MB limit.

Where to submit the photo

Apply on Togo Voyage. Create an account with an email address and phone number you will keep, use the Visa Assistant to check whether you need a visa, fill in the forms, upload the supporting documents and pay online by bank card or mobile money. You are notified when the application is received, processed, approved or rejected.

Embassies no longer accept visa applications except when the platform cannot be reached, and no visa is issued on arrival. Once in Togo, a visa is extended at the DGDN in Lomé.

Togo visa photo FAQ

35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in), 35 mm wide and 45 mm high, with the face taking up 70 to 80% of the photo. The upload form lists 35 x 45 mm as the recommended dimensions and gives no pixel size.

White. The new Togo Voyage platform asks for a white background in both its procedure page and its upload form. The original FAQ calls for a light, even and plain background with no gradient, which a plain white wall satisfies.

The visa application form accepts the identity photo as a JPG or PNG of up to 3 MB. The platform's separate photo-check tool accepts PNG, JPG or PDF files of up to 5 MB.

Yes. The criteria only ask for no distracting reflections and no shadows from the glasses, with both eyes fully visible. Remove them if you cannot avoid glare on the lenses.

Yes, as long as it meets the criteria. The platform's photo-check page suggests a smartphone app if you have no compliant identity photo, and it lets you test the photo before submitting. Use even light, a plain white background and a straight, neutral pose.

No. The Togo Voyage criteria ask for a natural, sharp colour photo that has not been retouched. Cropping a photo to the right size is not retouching, but smoothing skin or altering the picture is.

No visa is issued on arrival, according to Togo Voyage. Embassy applications are no longer accepted except when the platform cannot be reached, so almost every applicant uploads the photo online.

The platform warns that a non-compliant photo can lead to rejection or a delay. A rejected application must be submitted again, and the fee already paid is not refunded, so check the photo first.
