Taiwan photo specifications
Photo sizes and rules for 3 documents issued in Taiwan, taken from the issuing authorities and linked to their official pages.
At a glance
Taiwan's three main documents all use a 35 x 45 mm (3.5 x 4.5 cm) colour photo on a white background. The passport and the national ID card both ask for a head of 3.2 to 3.6 cm; the passport photo must be under 6 months old, the ID card photo under 2 years. Visa applications need two prints taken within 6 months.
Overview
A Taiwan passport photo is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in) in colour on a plain white background, with the head 32 to 36 mm from chin to crown and taken within the last 6 months; an uploaded photo must be a JPG or JPEG of at least 413 x 531 pixels and no more than 5 MB.
Two ministries set Taiwan's photo rules. The Bureau of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues passports to nationals and visas to foreign visitors, through its offices in Taiwan and its overseas missions, such as the Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices. The national identity card comes from household registration offices under the Ministry of the Interior's Department of Household Registration.
How the photo is handed in differs. Passport applicants give two identical prints or upload a JPG of at least 413 x 531 pixels, and adults with a household registration may renew fully online. ID card applicants give one print on thin glossy paper or upload a digital photo, and a photo on file from the last 2 years can be reused. Visa applicants attach two prints to the form they fill in online and print. In the United States, TECO San Francisco also accepts a 2 x 2 inch US passport photo with a 1 3/8 inch head.

Frequently asked questions
They share the size, 3.5 x 4.5 cm, the 3.2 to 3.6 cm head and the white background, and both ban altered, composite and mirrored photos. The difference is age: a passport photo must be taken within 6 months, while the ID card accepts one up to 2 years old.
Passport applications made in Taiwan through BOCA's online form system, travel agency uploads and the conditional online renewal take a JPG of at least 413 x 531 pixels, up to 5 MB. The ID card image upload service takes a JPG with the same limits. General visa applications need printed photos.
For passports, TECO San Francisco accepts a 2 x 2 inch US passport photo if the head measures 1 3/8 inches. Other offices publish other sizes: TECO Seattle asks for 35 to 40 mm wide, and TECO Los Angeles lists 1.77 x 1.38 inches. Check with your own office first.
White for all three documents. BOCA's passport standard asks for a plain white background with even lighting, the ID card standard asks for white, and the current visitor visa requirement pages ask for a white background too.
