At a glance

Most Mongolian documents use a 3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm) photo: passports ordered abroad, where the file is uploaded at 413 x 531 pixels, visas and residence permits. Applications to become or again be a Mongolian citizen use a larger 4 x 6 cm (40 x 60 mm) photo on the application form.

Overview

Two authorities handle the documents covered here. The General Authority for State Registration issues passports to Mongolian citizens: at home a first passport is ordered in person at the district one-stop service, while citizens abroad apply through an embassy and upload a digital portrait to the authority's photo portal. The Immigration Agency of Mongolia deals with foreign nationals. It issues visas together with Mongolia's embassies and consulates and through the evisa.mn portal, grants residence permits, and receives applications to acquire or restore Mongolian citizenship.

Visa and residence permit files take printed 3.5 x 4.5 cm photos, and on a first residence permit application the agency also records your photo and fingerprints itself. Citizenship forms have a 4 x 6 cm photo box. Only the passport rules set a background colour, which is white.

Frequently asked questions

3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm) for passports applied for abroad, visas and residence permits. Citizenship applications are the exception, with a 4 x 6 cm (40 x 60 mm) box on the forms.

Passport orders made through an embassy or consulate, where you upload a 413 x 531 pixel file, and passport re-orders through E-Mongolia. Visas at embassies, residence permits and citizenship applications use printed photos, and the e-visa is applied for online.

The passport rules published by the missions require white. The visa forms, the residence permit lists and the citizenship forms state no colour; they set the size and ask for a photo taken within the last six months.

Not on the current official forms reviewed. The old embassy visa form had a 3 x 4 box, but the Immigration Agency forms now in use, and its residence permit lists, all give 3.5 x 4.5 cm.
