Argentina passport photo requirements
The photo rules set by Registro Nacional de las Personas (RENAPER) for the Argentina passport, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What are the Argentina passport photo requirements?
You do not supply a photo for an Argentine passport. Your picture, fingerprints and signature are captured at the appointment, whether you apply at a Registro Civil, a RENAPER Documentation Centre, an airport Al Instante centre or an Argentine consulate abroad. No print or pixel size is published for applicants, and the Mi Argentina app books appointments but takes no photo. Passports are valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for under-18s.
The Argentine passport is issued by the Registro Nacional de las Personas (RENAPER), the national registry that also issues the DNI. You need it to travel outside Argentina, except to MERCOSUR countries, where your DNI also identifies you. For an adult the only document requirement is a valid DNI card; a previous passport is recommended but not required.
In Argentina you can go to the Registro Civil that serves your home address, or book a RENAPER Documentation Centre through the Mi Argentina app. The regular and exprés services deliver the passport by post, while the Al Instante service, offered at enabled airports and at the Buquebus office in Buenos Aires, hands it over within hours. Abroad, Argentines apply in person at the consulate for their district, which transmits the data to RENAPER; the passport is printed in Argentina and sent back to that consulate.
Each of these channels captures the photo itself, so there is nothing to print or upload. RENAPER's newest passport, described under Disposición 54/2026, has a polycarbonate data page with an electronic chip. Moving to it is not compulsory: a current passport stays valid until it expires or is renewed.
If you live in the United States, you also apply in person at the Argentine consulate for your area; the New York consulate, for example, books DNI and passport services through its online appointment system. The 1.5 x 1.5 inch size sometimes quoted for US applicants does not appear in any passport rule read for this page. It is the New York consulate's photo size for diplomatic, official and courtesy visas.

In the official words
Exact wording from the official sources, quoted because the details matter:
Passport procedures are in-person and by appointment only. On the day of your appointment, consular fees will be paid, a photo will be taken, fingerprints and signature will be recorded.
Key requirements
- Bring your DNI, not photos
RENAPER's requirements for adults list a valid DNI card, with a previous passport recommended but optional. No photograph appears in the requirements for adults, for minors or for applications made at a consulate.
- Biometrics are taken in person
At the appointment the office takes your photo, fingerprints and signature. The Vancouver consulate puts it plainly: on the day a photo is taken, fingerprints and signature are recorded, and the information goes directly to RENAPER. The Hong Kong consulate calls the same step digital data capture.
- Mi Argentina books, it does not photograph
The Mi Argentina app is where you request a slot at a RENAPER Documentation Centre. Neither the booking route nor any RENAPER passport page offers a way to upload a picture of yourself.
- An updated DNI comes first
For applications at a consulate, Cancillería requires a DNI in good condition that carries the updates due at ages 8 and 14. The emergency passport cannot be processed at all without an updated DNI.
- Errors mean a new passport
If the passport contains a mistake, a new one has to be generated. RENAPER makes the correction free of charge when it is requested within 90 days of issue.
- Three passports at consulates
Consulates handle the 10-year ordinary RENAPER passport, a provisional machine-readable passport valid for 60 days that only lets you return to Argentina, and an emergency machine-readable passport valid for up to one year. Cancillería's requirements page lists identity documents, not photographs, for all three.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Book a RENAPER Documentation Centre slot in Mi Argentina, or go to your local Registro Civil.
- Bring a valid DNI card, plus your previous passport if you have it.
- Check that your DNI has its age 8 and 14 updates before applying abroad.
- Take a child to the appointment with a parent or legal representative holding a valid DNI.
- Keep the application receipt so you can track the passport online.
- Check the printed data as soon as you receive the passport.
Don't
- Do not pay for passport prints: no Argentine passport channel asks for them.
- Do not look for a photo upload in Mi Argentina; it only books the appointment.
- Do not bring a minor without a parent or legal representative unless you hold the parents' permission certified by a notary or judge.
- Do not leave a printing error for more than 90 days if you want the free correction.
- Do not apply at a consulate outside the district where you live.
Babies and children
A child under 18 applies in person like an adult and is photographed at the appointment. The child must be accompanied by the father, mother or legal representative with a valid DNI. If the parents cannot be there, RENAPER asks for their permission to process the passport, certified by a notary or a judge, and an emancipated minor brings the court document recording the emancipation. A passport issued to someone under 18 is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
At a consulate, Cancillería asks for the child's birth certificate (or the recognition or adoption record) and the updated DNI of whoever holds parental responsibility, who must give express consent; that consent can also be given before a notary. The Hong Kong consulate asks children to attend with their parents and bring the original birth certificate.
Printed and digital photos
An applicant neither prints nor uploads anything for an Argentine passport. The image is captured at the office, and the holder's data are laser-engraved onto the data page at RENAPER's production plant, at the documentation centres in international airports or at the Buquebus terminal.
Applicants in the United States also book an in-person appointment at their consulate; the New York consulate requires an online booking for any DNI or passport service. The photo sizes published by US consulates, such as 4 x 4 cm in Miami or 1.5 x 1.5 inches in New York, belong to visa applications made by foreigners, not to Argentine passports.
Where to submit the photo
In Argentina: choose the Registro Civil for your home address, or book a RENAPER Documentation Centre through Mi Argentina and bring the booking confirmation and proof of payment. For the Al Instante service, go without an appointment to an enabled airport (Ezeiza, Aeroparque, Córdoba, Mendoza, Rosario or Salta) or book the Buquebus office in Buenos Aires. Regular and exprés passports arrive by post, and any person over 18 at the address can receive them by showing the application receipt.
Abroad: contact the Argentine consulate for the district where you live and book an appointment. Some consulates want scanned documents by email beforehand; Vancouver may disregard a booking if they arrive less than 24 hours ahead. You pay the consular fee, the consulate captures your biometrics, and you collect the passport there or, where the consulate offers it, receive it by post.

Argentina passport photo FAQ
No. RENAPER's requirements for an adult list a valid DNI card, and the office takes the photo, fingerprints and signature during the appointment. The same applies to children and to the Al Instante service at airports. Printed photos play no part in the process.
No. Mi Argentina is used to book an appointment at a RENAPER Documentation Centre, and RENAPER's online tools let you pay the fee and track the application. The passport itself needs an in-person visit, where your photo and biometrics are captured. You can also go to a Registro Civil without using the app.
RENAPER publishes no photo size for applicants, because the image is captured by its own equipment and engraved onto the data page. The 4 x 4 cm size often quoted for Argentina comes from visa applications and from the printed photos some consulates request for the DNI.
Yes. Consular passport applications are made in person and by appointment. The Vancouver consulate says a photo is taken and fingerprints and signature are recorded on the day, with the data sent directly to RENAPER. The passport is then printed in Argentina and sent to the consulate.
No passport rule read for this page asks for them. An Argentine passport requested at a US consulate is processed at an in-person appointment. The 1.5 x 1.5 inch size appears on the New York consulate's page for diplomatic, official and courtesy visas, which concerns visas rather than Argentine passports.
No. RENAPER says the update is not compulsory and your passport remains valid until it expires or is renewed. The new model, set out in Disposición 54/2026, adds a polycarbonate data page with an electronic chip.
A passport with an error has to be replaced by a newly generated one. RENAPER makes that correction free of charge when it is requested within 90 days of the date of issue.
Ten years for adults and 5 years for applicants under 18, counted from the date of issue. Consulates abroad issue the same 10-year ordinary passport; their provisional passport lasts 60 days and only serves to return to Argentina.
