Quick answer

What size is the Guyana passport photo?

Guyana does not fix one passport photo size. Form A says a photograph must be no larger than 45 x 35 mm (1.77 x 1.38 in) and no smaller than 32 x 26 mm (1.26 x 1.02 in), printed on photo quality paper. Guyanese missions abroad ask for a plain white background without colour or shadows, a neutral expression and no sunglasses. How many prints you send depends on the office.

Guyanese passports are applied for on Form A, the Application for a Guyana Passport, which the Ministry of Home Affairs publishes on its website. Its guardian authorisation is addressed to the Chief Passport Officer, and in Georgetown a colour photograph of the applicant is taken at a booth in the Central Immigration and Passport Office by an immigration clerk. The form still asks you to hand in a photograph that meets its size limits.

The Ministry of Home Affairs also links an online passport application and appointment system next to the paper form. The Department of Public Information announced on 14 June 2026 that applicants could start an application online from the next day, pick a passport office to finish processing and choose a date and time. The Washington embassy says that applications from abroad are completed online, followed by an appointment at an embassy or consulate where biometrics are taken.

The issuing side is brief about the photo. Form A gives a size range, asks for high quality printing, and requires the person who vouches for you to certify the back of a copy. The missions in New York, Washington and Kuwait publish longer lists covering the background, lighting, expression, glasses and head coverings. Those lists are used below, and where the missions differ from each other the text says so.

Key requirements

  • A size range, not one size

Form A sets an upper and a lower limit: a photograph must not be larger than 45 x 35 mm and must not be smaller than 32 x 26 mm. The New York, Washington and Kuwait pages repeat the same limits. The form writes the larger figure first, and for an upright portrait that reads as 45 mm high and 35 mm wide, so 35 x 45 mm (width first) is the biggest print it allows. The form does not spell out the orientation.

  • Plain white background

The missions in New York and Washington ask for a plain white background without colour or shadows, and Kuwait asks for plain white with no shadows. Kuwait also tells applicants not to wear white tops, because the background is white and a white top would not stand out.

  • Print quality

Form A says portraits taken with a digital camera should be of high quality and resolution and printed on photo quality paper. New York and Washington ask for a clear, high-contrast image that is properly exposed, with no washout, and no shadows or glare from lighting, glasses or jewellery.

  • Neutral face, features visible

New York and Washington ask for a neutral expression, with no smile, open mouth or frown, and say the eyes, ears and full facial features must be clearly visible. They also ask that the applicant is fully and properly dressed.

  • The recommender certifies a copy

Form A requires the recommender, the person who vouches for you, to endorse and stamp the back of the copy of the photographs with the words "I certify that this is a true likeness of Mr., Mrs. or Miss", followed by your name, and to sign it. Kuwait applies this endorsement to first-time, lost, damaged, name-change and non-machine-readable applications.

  • Prints and biometrics

New York asks for two identical photographs and for a biometric photo taken in person at the consulate. Washington and Kuwait list one coloured photograph. At the Central Immigration and Passport Office a clerk takes a colour photograph at the booth, and the form still asks you to submit a print.

  • Jewellery and piercings

Washington, New York and Kuwait do not accept earrings or studs on photographs of male applicants. New York asks all applicants to arrive without facial piercings (including nose rings), extra ear piercings, large jewellery or contact lenses, and allows only small, traditional lobe piercings.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Print the photograph between 32 x 26 mm and 45 x 35 mm.
  • Print on photo quality paper, in colour.
  • Use a plain white background with no shadows.
  • Keep a neutral expression with eyes, ears and the full face visible.
  • Light your face evenly so that there is no glare or washed-out area.
  • Ask your recommender to certify the back of the copy in the words Form A gives.
  • Check how many prints your office or mission wants before you print.

Don't

  • Do not smile, open your mouth or frown.
  • Do not wear sunglasses, or glasses that cast glare or shadows.
  • Do not wear a white top against the white background.
  • Do not wear earrings or studs if you are a male applicant.
  • Do not use a coloured or shadowed background.
  • Do not wear a head or hair covering unless it is for religious reasons and the full face stays visible.

Sample photos

How a Guyana passport photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 45 × 35 mm and background colour.

Correct
Open-mouth smile
Head tilted
Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

The missions do not all word this the same way. New York and Washington say no sunglasses, and no shadows or glare caused by glasses. Kuwait is stricter: "No glasses at the time the photograph is taken." Form A itself says nothing about glasses.

Taking glasses off is the choice that satisfies every office. If you keep them on where only glare is banned, the eyes must still be clearly visible, with no reflection across the lenses.

Headwear and religious dress

New York, Washington and Kuwait use the same exception: no head covering or hair covering, except for religious reasons, provided the full face is visible. Washington words it as "the full facial features are clearly visible". The eyes and ears must also remain visible according to New York and Washington.

Babies and children

Form A has a box for an applicant under 16 and a box for one aged 16 and over, and a section in which a parent or guardian authorises the passport of a child. Where one parent is unavailable, the form asks for an affidavit sworn before a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner of Oaths. Each person receives their own passport.

None of the pages read gives a different photo size or background for children. The same rules apply. New York asks that a child under 16 be accompanied by one or both parents (Washington also accepts a guardian), and Kuwait says children under 10 give no fingerprints or signature, with a parent's biometrics added to the child's passport.

Every office asks for a printed photograph. Form A says that portraits taken with a digital camera should be high quality and resolution and printed on photo quality paper, and it publishes no pixel size or file format. The pages read do not say whether the online application accepts an uploaded image. A digital portrait can be cropped to a size inside the 32 x 26 to 45 x 35 mm range and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter, then cut into separate prints.

Where to submit the photo

In Guyana, take Form A, your documents and the photograph to the Central Immigration and Passport Office in Georgetown, or begin an application on the online system the Ministry of Home Affairs links. The recommender who signs section 7 must be a citizen of Guyana who has known you for at least two years and is not an immediate relative.

Abroad, the Washington embassy says applications must now be completed online, after which you are prompted to book an appointment at an embassy or consulate to have biometrics taken. New York accepts appointments only and no longer takes mail-in applications. Kuwait asks you to visit the embassy for biometric registration, where fingerprints and a photograph are taken on the day.

Guyana passport photo FAQ

Form A gives limits rather than one size: no larger than 45 x 35 mm (1.77 x 1.38 in) and no smaller than 32 x 26 mm (1.26 x 1.02 in). The New York, Washington and Kuwait pages repeat those limits. The form does not state the orientation; read as height first, a portrait 35 mm wide and 45 mm high is the upper limit.

A plain white one. New York says the background must be plain white, without colour or shadows, and Washington and Kuwait agree. Form A does not name a colour. Kuwait adds that a white top will not be suitable, because the background is white.

It depends on the office. The New York consulate asks for two identical photographs. The Washington and Kuwait pages list one coloured photograph, though Washington's photo guidelines also say "Both photos are identical". Form A does not state a number. Check with your office before printing.

It depends on the mission. New York and Washington say no sunglasses and no glare or shadows from glasses. Kuwait says no glasses at the time the photograph is taken. Form A is silent. Removing your glasses is accepted everywhere.

Only for religious reasons, and only if the full face is visible. New York, Washington and Kuwait word the exception in the same way. Hair coverings and other headpieces worn for any other reason are not accepted.

The Kuwait embassy asks for a photograph taken within the last 3 months. Form A and the New York and Washington pages state no period, so a recent photo that looks like you today is the safe choice.

In Georgetown, Form A says the colour photograph of the applicant will be taken at the booth at the Central Immigration and Passport Office by a Data Entry Immigration Clerk, and you still submit a photograph of the stated size. Missions abroad take a biometric photo at the appointment.

Form A says the recommender must endorse and stamp the reverse side of the copy of the photographs with the words "I certify that this is a true likeness of Mr., Mrs. or Miss" and sign it. Kuwait applies it to first-time, lost, damaged, name-change and non-machine-readable applications.
