At a glance

Argentina's passport and DNI are issued by RENAPER, which photographs you at the appointment, so you bring no photo; the only printed DNI photos are two 4 x 4 cm (40 x 40 mm) prints at consulates without RENAPER's digital system. Argentine visas, issued by consulates, need two current 4 x 4 cm colour photos on a white background. RaDEX residence applications take an uploaded JPG.

Overview

An Argentine passport needs no photo from you, printed or digital, because RENAPER or the consulate photographs you at the appointment, while an Argentine visa needs two current 4 x 4 cm (40 x 40 mm) colour prints taken from the front on a white background, with no digital file.

Two sets of authorities issue the Argentine documents covered here. RENAPER, the national registry of persons, issues the DNI identity card and the passport. It captures photos, fingerprints and signatures with its own equipment at Registros Civiles, its Documentation Centres, airport centres and consulates, so for those documents there is no print size to meet. The Mi Argentina app books RENAPER appointments but accepts no photo.

Foreign visitors and residents deal with Cancillería and Migraciones. Consulates issue visas against paper applications that include two 4 x 4 cm colour photos on white, though some US consulates publish their own photo rules. Migraciones runs the online AVE, which takes a PDF of the passport and US visa, and RaDEX, where residence applicants upload a face photo before being photographed for their DNI in person.

Frequently asked questions

A square photo of 4 x 4 cm (40 x 40 mm). Argentine consulates ask for two in colour on a white background for visas, and consulates without RENAPER's digital intake ask for two on white, without glasses or hat, for the DNI.

Not in Argentina. RENAPER takes the photo, fingerprints and signature at the Registro Civil or Documentation Centre, and consulates do the same for passports. Only some consulates without RENAPER's digital system ask for printed DNI photos.

A valid DNI is accepted for entry to the countries of the extended MERCOSUR. For other destinations RENAPER requires a valid passport.

Of the documents covered here, only the RaDEX residence application does: it asks for a JPG of your face on white, taken at the time of upload. Mi Argentina books RENAPER appointments but accepts no photo, and the AVE asks for documents only.

Not for the passport: there is nothing to make, because the office captures your picture during the appointment. A home photo is useful for a visa, or for a consulate that still wants printed DNI photos: stand against a plain white wall, face the camera, crop the picture to 4 x 4 cm and print it at a photo counter. RaDEX is the exception online, as it wants a picture taken at the moment you upload it.

No. Cancillería's current visa lists and its DNI rule for consular prints all ask for a front view, and the passport picture is taken by RENAPER's own equipment. The three-quarter view seen in older guides is not on any official page checked in November 2026.
