Brazil passport or visa photo requirements
The 50 × 70 mm photo rules set by Polícia Federal for the Brazil passport or visa, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Brazil passport or visa photo?
A 5 x 7 cm print (50 x 70 mm, about 1.97 x 2.76 in) is what the Brazilian Federal Police asks for when a child under 5 applies for a passport: recent, with a white background. The Brazilian consulate in Faro, Portugal accepts a recent colour print of 3 x 4 or 5 x 7 cm on white for passports, return authorisations and visas. Adults applying in Brazil bring no print, because the PF photographs them.
A 5 x 7 cm photo, 5 cm wide and 7 cm tall, is a print format rather than a separate document. The Polícia Federal (PF), which issues Brazilian passports in Brazil, names it in its list of required documents, and some Brazilian consulates abroad accept it for any service that needs a photo. That is the sense of passport or visa here: one print format that a passport, an emergency return authorisation or a visa application can use.
At the PF only one group needs it. Staff photograph every applicant over 5 during the appointment and do not take a print instead. An applicant under 5 must present a recent 5 x 7 photo with a white background together with the documents, and the child must still attend.
Abroad, the e-consular page of the Brazilian consulate in Faro, Portugal tells applicants for passports, return authorisations to Brazil (ARB) and visas to bring a recent colour photo of the face on a white background, printed at 3 x 4 or 5 x 7 cm. Other consulates set different sizes, such as 2 x 2 inches in Chicago and 3.5 x 4.5 cm in London, so a 5 x 7 print is not accepted everywhere.

Key requirements
- PF: under-5s only
In Brazil the PF lists the 5 x 7 photograph only for applicants under 5. Anyone older is photographed by PF staff at the counter, and a print brought from home is not accepted instead.
- The child still attends
The print does not replace attendance. The PF wants the child at the appointment, and explains that having the photo ready avoids delays and discomfort for small children while they are being served.
- Eyes open except newborns
A photograph with closed eyes is refused unless the applicant is a newborn. Older babies and toddlers need their eyes open in the print.
- Nothing over the face
The PF rejects the print if the child's face is partly covered by gear, ornaments or adornments. Keep the whole face clear in the picture.
- Must still look like the child
Young children change fast. The PF refuses a print that no longer identifies the child because of the time since it was taken, so take it shortly before the appointment.
- Faro: one print for several services
The Faro consulate applies a single photo rule to passports, return authorisations and visas: a recent colour picture of the face, white background, printed at 3 x 4 or 5 x 7 cm and brought by the applicant.
- Check the consulate first
Brazilian consulates follow local sizes. Chicago asks for 2 x 2 inches and London for 3.5 x 4.5 cm, so use 5 x 7 cm abroad only where the post names it.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Measure the print: 5 cm wide and 7 cm tall.
- Use a plain white background.
- Take it shortly before the appointment so it still looks like the child.
- Keep the eyes open unless the child is a newborn.
- Check your consulate's page before printing 5 x 7 cm abroad.
Don't
- Do not bring a 5 x 7 print for an adult PF appointment; it will not be used.
- Do not let accessories or ornaments cover part of the child's face.
- Do not use an old photo that no longer resembles the child.
- Do not assume every consulate takes 5 x 7 cm.

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Babies and children
This is mostly a children's format. For a passport applied for in Brazil, a child under 5 brings one recent 5 x 7 print with a white background and comes to the appointment with the parents. Closed eyes are allowed only for a newborn.
Keep the face clear of anything that covers part of it, and make sure the photo still looks like the child on the day: the PF can refuse an older picture that no longer identifies them. Minors also need the parents' authorisation, which is a separate item on the PF document list.
Printed and digital photos
Both channels that use this format want paper. The PF takes the under-5 print with the documents at the appointment, and Faro asks applicants to bring a printed photo. Neither publishes an upload or a pixel size for it.
You can make the print from a digital photo: crop it to 5 x 7 cm with a white background and print it at a photo counter on a 4 x 6 inch sheet, then cut out one copy.
Where to submit the photo
In Brazil, the application form and fee are completed online first. Then bring the print to the PF passport office at the time you booked, with the child's documents and the parents' authorisation.
Abroad, book through e-consular and bring the print to the consulate on the day. At Faro the same print rule covers passports, return authorisations and visas, so one photo size works for each of those services there.
How to get your Brazil passport or visa photo
- Check the official requirements. Read the official specification for the Brazil passport or visa: 50 × 70 mm print, white background. Check the rules on pose, expression, glasses and headwear below.
- Take the photo. Follow the key requirements: pF: under-5s only; the child still attends; eyes open except newborns; nothing over the face.
- Prepare a print or digital file. Both channels that use this format want paper. The PF takes the under-5 print with the documents at the appointment, and Faro asks applicants to bring a printed photo. Neither publishes an upload or a pixel size for it.
- Submit the photo with your application. In Brazil, the application form and fee are completed online first. Then bring the print to the PF passport office at the time you booked, with the child's documents and the parents' authorisation.
Brazil passport or visa photo FAQ
It is a print 5 cm wide and 7 cm tall (50 x 70 mm, about 1.97 x 2.76 inches). The PF uses it for passport applicants under 5, and the Faro consulate accepts it, alongside 3 x 4 cm, for passports, return authorisations and visas.
No, not when applying in Brazil. The PF photographs every applicant over 5 at the appointment and will not take a print instead. Abroad, follow your consulate: Faro accepts 3 x 4 or 5 x 7 cm, while Chicago asks for 2 x 2 inches.
Yes, but only for a newborn. The PF accepts closed eyes as an exception for newborn applicants and refuses such photos in every other case.
White. The PF asks for a recent 5 x 7 photo with a white background for children under 5, and the Faro consulate also requires a white background for its 3 x 4 or 5 x 7 cm prints.
Some do. The consulate in Faro, Portugal applies the same photo rule to passports, return authorisations and visas: a recent colour print on white, 3 x 4 or 5 x 7 cm. London asks visa applicants for 3.5 x 4.5 cm, so check your post.
Because accessories or adornments partly cover the face, because the eyes are closed when the child is not a newborn, or because the picture is old enough that it no longer identifies the child.
