Quick answer

What are the Chile passport photo requirements?

You do not supply a photo for an ordinary Chilean passport. It is issued by the Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación after an in-person appointment, and consulates abroad capture a digital photograph, signature and fingerprints during the visit; the Miami consulate warns that photos you bring cannot be used. No official source gives a 45 x 45 mm print size. A few consulates want separate prints for their consular register, and a newborn's emergency passport needs one.

Chilean passports are issued by the Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación (SRCeI). The passport shows your full name, photograph, signature, and place and date of birth, and it is valid for 10 years. There is no online application. In Chile you book an appointment on the Registro Civil website with your ClaveÚnica, then go to the office you booked, whether it is your first passport or a renewal.

The one requirement ChileAtiende lists for that appointment is a valid identity card (cédula de identidad) in good condition. If your card has expired or you have none, you give your RUN number and apply for the cédula and the passport at the same time. A photograph is not on the list, and the cédula itself needs no documents at all, only your presence.

Chileans living abroad apply at the consulate for their place of residence. The consulate records your photograph, signature and fingerprints electronically, and the passport is then produced in Chile and sent back to the consulate, where you collect it. Since the new identification system came in, consulates issue a single 50-page version.

Key requirements

  • Photographed at the appointment

The Washington and New Delhi consulates ask you to come in person, by appointment, so that your digital photograph, signature and fingerprints can be captured electronically. Miami states that the photo is taken at the consulate and that photos you bring cannot be used. Madrid says you do not need to bring one, and Amsterdam tells you not to.

  • Book before you go

In Chile, appointments are booked on the Registro Civil website with ClaveÚnica. Abroad, you contact the consulate for your area; the Foreign Ministry keeps a list of consulates that offer electronic booking, and for the others you contact the consulate directly.

  • A valid cédula, or apply for both

You need a valid Chilean identity card to get a passport. If it has expired, you must apply for the cédula and the passport together, both in Chile and at a consulate. Abroad, you also prove Chilean nationality with the cédula or your previous passport.

  • Prints only for the consular register

Some consulates collect printed photos at the passport appointment for their own records, not for the passport. Oslo asks for two recent colour passport-size photos for your consular record card, and Tegucigalpa for one 4 x 5 cm colour photo on a white background to update the consular register.

  • Emergency documents follow other rules

An emergency passport is a separate consular document for Chileans abroad who lose their passport or face an emergency while a new one is pending. Amsterdam asks for a passport-size photo for a newborn's emergency passport, and Madrid asks for a colour passport-type photo with a safe-conduct request for travel back to Chile.

  • Collect it where you applied

The passport is handed over at the consulate where you applied. Washington and New Delhi release it only against the receipts you were given on the day you applied, so keep them safe.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Book an appointment before going to the Registro Civil or a consulate.
  • Bring your valid cédula, or apply for a new one at the same time.
  • Bring your previous passport, plus a police report if it was lost or stolen.
  • Ask your consulate whether it wants prints for its consular register.
  • Book a separate appointment for each child.
  • Keep the application receipt until you collect the passport.

Don't

  • Do not take printed photos to the Miami, Madrid or Amsterdam consulates for a passport.
  • Do not look for an online passport form: the procedure is in person only.
  • Do not bring a child without both parents or the absent parent's notarised authorisation.
  • Do not try to leave Chile on an emergency passport.
  • Do not buy tickets before the new passport is in your hands.

Babies and children

In Chile, a parent books the appointment for a child under 14 on the Registro Civil website with ClaveÚnica, choosing the option for minors (Menores de edad) and filling in the child's details. Each child needs an appointment of their own, and ChileAtiende publishes separate requirements for collecting a child's passport.

Abroad, applicants under 18 attend the consulate with both parents. If one parent cannot come, they provide a notarised authorisation, or the other parent shows a copy of the court ruling on the child's personal care; Madrid requires that authorisation to be apostilled and recent. The child is photographed at the consulate like an adult. Washington adds that first-time applicants, and anyone whose current documents were requested before the age of six, have prints taken from every finger.

Newborns are the exception. Amsterdam issues emergency passports to newborn children of two Chilean parents who hold no other nationality, and for those it asks you to bring a passport-size photo.

The ordinary passport uses neither a print nor an upload. ChileAtiende marks the procedure as not available online, and consulates capture the image digitally at the counter. The documents are made in Chile, not at the consulate, which is why consulates quote several weeks before collection.

Printed photos only appear around the passport: Oslo's two passport-size prints for the consular record card, Tegucigalpa's 4 x 5 cm print for the register, Amsterdam's photo for a newborn's emergency passport and Madrid's photo for a safe-conduct. None of these pages gives 45 x 45 mm. If your consulate asks for prints, a digital photo can be printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter and cut to the size it names.

Where to submit the photo

In Chile, book on the Registro Civil website and go to the office you chose with your valid cédula. The same Registro Civil network handles the identity card: first cards and renewals are by appointment, and an expired card issued no more than 8 years ago can be renewed online, reusing the photo from your last valid card.

Abroad, contact the Chilean consulate for your place of residence to book. Bring proof of nationality, your cédula, your previous passport and, for a lost or stolen passport, a police report where the country allows one. If you must travel to Chile urgently without a valid document, the consulate can issue a safe-conduct (salvoconducto) valid for 10 calendar days, but only for the journey to Chile.

How to get your Chile passport photo

  1. Check the official requirements. Read the official specification for the Chile passport: not chosen by you background. Check the rules on pose, expression, glasses and headwear below.
  2. Take the photo. Follow the key requirements: photographed at the appointment; book before you go; a valid cédula, or apply for both; prints only for the consular register.
  3. Prepare a print or digital file. The ordinary passport uses neither a print nor an upload. ChileAtiende marks the procedure as not available online, and consulates capture the image digitally at the counter.
  4. Submit the photo with your application. In Chile, book on the Registro Civil website and go to the office you chose with your valid cédula.

Chile passport photo FAQ

No. ChileAtiende lists only a valid cédula for the Registro Civil appointment, and consulates capture your digital photograph, signature and fingerprints during the visit. The Miami consulate says plainly that photos you bring cannot be used, and Amsterdam tells applicants not to bring one.

No official page read gives that size. The passport photo is taken by the Registro Civil or the consulate, so you never supply one. The only consular print size found was 4 x 5 cm, which Tegucigalpa asks for to update its consular register, not for the passport itself.

No. You can book the appointment online, with ClaveÚnica on the Registro Civil website in Chile, or through a consulate abroad, but the application itself is made in person so that your photograph and fingerprints can be captured.

Some consulates keep a consular record for each Chilean in their area. Oslo asks for two recent colour passport-size photos to create or renew your record card, and Tegucigalpa for one 4 x 5 cm colour photo on white. These are for the consulate's files; the passport photo is still taken on site.

Often yes. Amsterdam asks for a passport-size photo for a newborn's emergency passport, and Madrid asks for a colour passport-type photo with a safe-conduct request. An emergency passport is not valid for leaving Chile, and a safe-conduct only covers the journey back to Chile.

In Chile, a parent books a separate appointment for each child under 14 on the Registro Civil website, using the option for minors. Abroad, children under 18 attend the consulate with both parents, or with a notarised authorisation from the parent who cannot come. The child is photographed on site.

No. ChileAtiende says no documents are required for the identity card, only the applicant's presence with their full name, date of birth and RUN. If you renew an expired card online, the Registro Civil reuses the photo from your last valid card, and the new card is valid for three years.
