Australia taxi driver ID card photo requirements
The 65 × 65 mm photo rules set by NSW Point to Point Transport Commissioner for the Australia taxi driver ID card, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Australia taxi driver ID card photo?
The taxi and private hire vehicle ID card in this photo tool is the NSW driver authority, which took two 65 x 65 mm colour photos and has not been valid since 1 November 2017. A NSW taxi driver now displays a Driver ID: a card or electronic document with the driver's photograph and an identification number, issued by the taxi service provider after on-boarding. No government photo size applies, so ask your provider what it needs.
Until late 2017, people who drove taxis or private hire vehicles in New South Wales needed a driver authority, a photo card issued by Roads and Maritime Services under the Passenger Transport Act 1990. The application for a replacement authority card asked for two current colour photos, 65 mm square. That scheme has ended, and driver authorities have not been valid since 1 November 2017.
Under the Point to Point Transport (Taxis and Hire Vehicles) Act 2016 and its regulation, the NSW Government no longer issues a driver card. Authorised service providers must make sure their drivers meet the safety standards, which include having held an unrestricted Australian driver licence for at least 12 months in the preceding four years and meeting the medical standards for commercial vehicle drivers.
For taxi drivers, the nearest equivalent of the old card is the Driver ID. The regulation requires the driver of a taxi to be provided with a driver identity document, as a card or electronic document, containing a photograph of the driver and an identification number from the provider of the taxi service. Neither the regulation nor the Point to Point Transport Commissioner's guidance sets a photo size, background or format, so this page sets out what is published and leaves the photo itself to your provider.

Key requirements
- Driver authorities have ended
A driver authority has not been valid since 1 November 2017, and the NSW Government no longer issues them. The Commissioner states that the Driver ID is not the same as a driver authority.
- Photo plus an ID number
Once a service provider has fully on-boarded you, it must issue a Driver ID as a card or electronic document containing your photograph and an identification number it supplies.
- Each provider on-boards you
Every service provider, or affiliate, runs its own checks and on-boarding. If you drive for several, show each one's identification number, unless the Commissioner has agreed an arrangement such as the shared Driver ID issued under NSW Taxi Council branding.
- Displayed in the taxi's holder
A taxi must be fitted with a device for displaying the Driver ID, and the ID must be in it, clearly visible to any passenger, whenever the taxi provides rank and hail services.
- No ID on display, no rank and hail work
If your Driver ID is lost, damaged or misplaced, ask your provider for a replacement. You must not provide rank and hail passenger services until a Driver ID is on display.
- The provider sets the photo rules
The regulation only says the document must contain a photograph of the driver. Size, background and format are left to the provider that issues it, so follow its instructions.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Get on-boarded by each taxi service provider you drive for.
- Ask your provider what photo it needs for the Driver ID.
- Keep the Driver ID in the taxi's display device during rank and hail work.
- Contact your provider straight away if the ID is lost or damaged.
- Make sure you have held an unrestricted Australian licence for 12 months in the last four years.
Don't
- Do not apply for a driver authority; none has been valid since 1 November 2017.
- Do not work rank and hail without your Driver ID on display.
- Do not assume one provider's Driver ID covers another provider.
- Do not rely on the old 65 x 65 mm photo instructions from the authority form.

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Glasses
Neither the regulation nor the Commissioner's Driver ID guidance has any rule on glasses, headwear or expression for the Driver ID photo. Those choices belong to the provider that issues it, so ask before the picture is taken.
Your driver licence is a separate matter. In NSW, Transport for NSW takes the licence photo and asks you to remove all glasses and sunglasses, even if you need your glasses to drive.
Printed and digital photos
The regulation lets the Driver ID be either a card or an electronic document. Either way it has to be shown in the display device fitted in the taxi, clearly visible to passengers. Whether your provider wants a print, a digital file or takes the photo itself is up to that provider.
The old driver authority was a government card, and its replacement form asked for two identical colour prints, each 65 mm square. That format belonged to the abolished card; nothing published for the Driver ID asks for it.
Where to submit the photo
There is nowhere to lodge a taxi ID photo with the NSW Government. You start driving through an authorised taxi service provider or affiliate, which checks that you meet the licence, medical and other safety standards, on-boards you and then issues the Driver ID. If you drive for more than one provider, each one on-boards you separately.
Hire vehicle drivers work through authorised booking service providers, which must also make sure their drivers meet the safety standards. The Driver ID clause in the regulation is written for taxis.
How to get your Australia taxi driver ID card photo

- Take the photo. Follow the key requirements: driver authorities have ended; photo plus an ID number; each provider on-boards you; displayed in the taxi's holder.
- Prepare a print or digital file. The regulation lets the Driver ID be either a card or an electronic document. Either way it has to be shown in the display device fitted in the taxi, clearly visible to passengers.
- Submit the photo with your application. There is nowhere to lodge a taxi ID photo with the NSW Government.
Australia taxi driver ID card photo FAQ
No. Driver authorities were issued under the Passenger Transport Act 1990 and have not been valid since 1 November 2017. Authorised service providers now make sure their drivers meet the safety standards, and the NSW Government no longer issues the cards.
No size is set by the regulation or by the Point to Point Transport Commissioner. The rule only requires the Driver ID to contain a photograph of the driver and an identification number from the taxi service provider, so the provider decides how the photo is taken and sized.
The taxi service provider, or its affiliate, once it has fully on-boarded you. Some providers use a shared Driver ID under NSW Taxi Council branding with one identification number per driver, but each provider remains accountable for the IDs and on-boarding of its drivers.
Yes. The regulation allows a card or an electronic document. Whatever form it takes, it must be displayed in the device fitted in the taxi so that it is clearly visible to any passenger during rank and hail work.
Contact your service provider or affiliated provider for a replacement. Until a Driver ID is on display, you must not provide rank and hail passenger services. NSW Police and authorised officers can issue penalty notices for not displaying it.
No. The old driver authority replacement form asked for square 65 x 65 mm colour prints and said passport photographs were not acceptable. Driver authorities ended in 2017, and nothing published for today's Driver ID uses that format.
