Quick answer

What size is the Australia Queensland driver licence photo?

For a Queensland driver licence, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) captures your digital photo at a customer service centre when a new one is needed. You only supply photos when renewing by mail from a remote part of Queensland, interstate or overseas: 2 identical colour prints, 35 x 45 mm, no more than 6 months old, passport quality, printed at 600 dpi or more and unedited, with glasses off and both prints endorsed by an approved witness.

Queensland driver licences are issued by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). The licence photo is a digital image that TMR captures, together with your signature, at a transport and motoring customer service centre; you can also renew at a participating QGAP office or, in rural or remote areas, a licence-issuing police station. TMR says only that you may need to have your photo taken when you renew, so whether a new picture is taken depends on your record.

The age of the stored photo matters for online renewal too. When you renew a provisional or open licence online, the longest period you can request depends on when your digital photo was last taken. To renew for longer, up to the 5-year maximum, you attend a centre to have a new digital photo and signature captured.

Two mail renewal kits are the exception to counter photos: one for people who live in a remote area of Queensland and cannot get to a licence-issuing office, and one for licence holders travelling interstate or overseas. Both ask for printed photos, and TMR sets out the same photo rules on both pages.

Key requirements

  • Captured digitally at a centre

You never bring prints to the counter. If a photo is required, staff capture it digitally with your signature. Customer service centres no longer need an application form, while police stations and most QGAP offices still use form F3000.

  • Mail renewals need 2 matching prints

The remote-area kit and the interstate or overseas kit both require 2 identical colour photos, 35 mm wide by 45 mm long, taken no more than 6 months earlier.

  • Passport quality, not booth pictures

TMR requires passport-quality photos and refuses pictures from automatic machines such as photo booths. Print them on high-quality paper at a resolution of 600 dpi or higher.

  • Leave the image unedited

The photos must not be digitally altered or manipulated. TMR names photo editing to remove spots as an example, so blemishes stay in the picture.

  • Witness endorsement on both prints

An approved witness, such as a doctor, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner for Declarations or consular officer, endorses the back of each photo using TMR's exact wording, which certifies it as a true photograph of you in the witness's presence, and signs it.

  • Neutral face, no glasses

At the counter, remove glasses, sunglasses and headwear and keep a neutral expression. Posted prints follow the same glasses rule: they come off even if you normally wear them to drive.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Check your renewal notice to see if you can renew online.
  • Order 2 identical colour prints for a mail renewal.
  • Have both prints endorsed when the witness sees you sign the form.
  • Print the specimen signature form on white A4 paper.
  • Make the cheque or money order payable to the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
  • Post the completed kit to the Dalby Customer Service Centre.

Don't

  • Do not send photo booth prints.
  • Do not remove spots or blemishes with editing software.
  • Do not wear glasses or sunglasses in the photo.
  • Do not send cash with a mail renewal.
  • Do not use a mail kit if your licence is cancelled or suspended.

Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

Take your glasses off. At a customer service centre, TMR asks you to remove glasses and sunglasses before the photo is captured. For posted prints, both the remote-area and the interstate or overseas pages state that glasses or sunglasses must be removed even if you normally wear them for driving. Neither page mentions a medical exception.

Headwear and religious dress

Headwear comes off for a counter photo unless you wear it for religious reasons. In that case it must be adjusted until every facial feature between the bottom of your chin and the top of your forehead can be clearly seen.

The mail renewal pages do not repeat the headwear rule; they say more detail on the photo requirements is in the kit itself.

TMR has no photo upload. In person your picture is captured digitally at the counter, and online renewals rely on the photo already on file, with the renewal period you can choose online depending on how old it is. Printed photos are needed only for the two mail kits.

If you take the mail renewal photo with a camera or phone, it still has to be printed at 35 x 45 mm, on high-quality paper at 600 dpi or more, with nothing retouched. A digital photo can be cropped to that size and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter to give the 2 identical prints.

Where to submit the photo

Renew at a transport and motoring customer service centre, a participating QGAP office or, in rural and remote areas, a licence-issuing police station. Learner, provisional and open licence holders should check their renewal notice to see whether online renewal is open to them.

For a mail renewal, download the remote area kit or the interstate or overseas kit, complete the application form and specimen signature form (interstate and overseas applicants also complete a temporary residence statement), and add a medical certificate if you are 75 or older or have a condition that may affect safe driving. Post everything to the Manager, Dalby Customer Service Centre, PO Box 767, Dalby QLD 4405. From interstate or overseas you can apply up to 6 weeks before expiry, and the new licence should arrive within 21 days of a successful renewal.
