At a glance

Chile's passport and identity card need no photo from you: the Registro Civil, or a Chilean consulate abroad, takes it at the appointment, and no official page sets a 45 x 45 mm print. A Chilean visa (autorización previa) needs a 5 x 5 cm (50 x 50 mm) colour photo on white, uploaded to the Foreign Ministry's online system. Residence permits take a recent JPG or PNG on white, with no size set.

Overview

Two bodies handle Chilean identity documents. The Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación issues passports and identity cards to Chileans, and identity cards to foreign residents; it works through its own offices in Chile and, for Chileans abroad, through the consulates of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In both places you attend in person and your picture is captured on the spot, so you bring no print.

Entry and residence are separate. Consulates grant the prior authorisation or visa that some nationalities need for a short stay, through an online platform where you upload the photo. Residence permits are decided by the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones on its own digital portal, again with an uploaded photo. Approved residents then visit the Registro Civil for their identity card.

Frequently asked questions

Not for the ordinary passport or the identity card, which are photographed at the appointment. Prints appear only in side cases, such as consular register cards (Oslo, Tegucigalpa), a newborn's emergency passport in Amsterdam, or a safe-conduct in Madrid. Visa and residence photos are uploaded, not printed.

The consular visa photo. The Foreign Ministry asks visa applicants to upload a 5 x 5 cm colour photo with a white background and the full face visible, without glasses, headscarf or cap. Chilean residence permits set no size.

Passports and identity cards come from the Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación, through its offices in Chile and through consulates abroad. Visas for short stays are granted by consulates under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and residence permits by the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones.

No. Foreign residents obtain the cédula at a Registro Civil office in Chile after their residence permit takes effect, booking within 30 days. The Miami consulate notes that foreigners' identity cards are not a consular service.
