Quick answer

What size is the Dominican Republic visa photo?

Dominican consulates ask for one photo, 4 x 5 cm (40 x 50 mm), taken from the front against a white background, for every visa type. One block of the central Foreign Ministry page still lists 2 x 2 inches, and the VFS Global page for India gives 3.5 x 4.5 cm. No official page read sets a head size, pixel size or glasses rule.

A Dominican visa is requested at the Dominican embassy or consulate nearest to where you live, or at the one assigned to your area. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) runs the service through its Dirección de Servicios Consulares, División de Visas. Its service page describes applying in person or by email, and it warns that completing every requirement does not mean the visa is approved, because the Ministry makes the final decision.

The Dirección General de Migración (DGM) appears on that page only for what happens after arrival: the holder of a residence visa must report to the DGM to formalise temporary residence. The DGM website refused automated access, so its own photo rules were not read. For the visa itself, the photo is one line on each consulate checklist, and the paper application form has a box marked "Fotografía".

The consulate pages in New York, Havana and Caracas, and the Hanoi consular section, all give 4 x 5 cm. The central MIREX page contains two sets of checklists: the first says 2 x 2 inches, the second says 4 x 5 cm. Because the sets disagree, check the size with the consulate that will receive your application before you print.

Key requirements

  • One photo at 4 x 5 cm

The New York, Havana and Caracas consulate pages word it identically: "Una (1) fotografía tamaño 4 x 5 centímetros, de frente y con fondo blanco" (one photograph, 4 x 5 centimetres, front view, white background). The Hanoi consular section gives 4 cm x 5 cm as well.

  • Front view, white background

Every visa type on the MIREX page asks for a front view on white. No page read describes head size, eye position or shadows, so keep to a plain white background and a straight-on pose.

  • Attach it, do not staple

The Hanoi consular section asks for a recent passport-size photograph, white background, 4 cm x 5 cm, properly attached to the visa application form, and says not to staple it.

  • Two sizes on one MIREX page

The first set of checklists on the central page says "2¨x 2¨ plgs." (2 x 2 inches) and the second says 4 x 5 centímetros. Every consulate page read uses 4 x 5 cm.

  • VFS Global India is different again

The VFS Global information page for the Dominican embassy in New Delhi asks for 3.5 x 4.5 cm, colour, on white, not more than 1 month old, with no border. Its tourist visa checklist, by contrast, says 4x5 cm. Ask the application centre which one it applies.

  • No applicant photo for exceptional visa-free entry

The entry facility without a visa is granted in exceptional cases for civil, diplomatic, military or government visitors. The Caracas page asks for a copy of the passport showing the details and photo, valid for at least 6 months, and no separate picture.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Confirm the photo size with your consulate or application centre before printing.
  • Print one photo at 4 x 5 cm, face forward, on a plain white background.
  • Use a recent photo of yourself.
  • Attach the photo to the visa application form without staples.
  • In India, check the size with the VFS Global centre, because its own pages disagree.

Don't

  • Do not staple the photo to the form.
  • Do not send a scan or colour photocopy to VFS Global India.
  • Do not assume 2 x 2 inches: the consulate pages ask for 4 x 5 cm.
  • Do not add a border to the print.
  • Do not wear a hat or cap; VFS Global India allows headgear only on religious grounds.

Sample photos

How a Dominican Republic visa photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 40 × 50 mm and background colour.

Correct
Open-mouth smile
Head tilted
Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

No Dominican consulate page or MIREX page read sets a rule on glasses. The VFS Global list for India asks for a sharp, clean photo in which you look directly at the camera, and for natural skin tone. If you need to keep your glasses on, ask the consulate first.

Headwear and religious dress

The VFS Global list for India says the photo is to be taken without headgear, hat or cap. It allows headgear case by case when the applicant wears it on religious grounds, as long as the chin, nose, eyes, ears and eyebrows are not covered and the forehead is uncovered enough for the shape of the face to show. The consulate pages read state no headwear rule.

Babies and children

The consular pages set no separate photo rule for children: each checklist asks for one photo. A minor whose applicant is not a parent needs written authorisation from the parents or guardian, which the MIREX page lists as a document. No page read says whether a child may be photographed differently from an adult.

The consulate pages describe a printed photo: Hanoi says to attach it to the application form. VFS Global India says scanned and colour photocopies are not accepted, even though its tourist checklist lists the photo as a high-resolution JPG. A digital photo can be cropped to 4 x 5 cm and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter, then cut to size.

Where to submit the photo

Apply at the Dominican embassy or consulate nearest to your home, or at the one that serves your area. The MIREX page lists the channels as in person and by email. The visa application form is available at the consulate or on the ministry services portal. The consulate forwards the application, and the ministry decides.

In India the Dominican embassy in New Delhi accepts visa applications through VFS Global. VFS says it does not play any role in processing the application, which is entirely the prerogative of the embassy. After arrival, a resident visa holder reports to the Dirección General de Migración to formalise temporary residence.

The MIREX page lists the channels as in person and by email. The visa application form is available at the consulate or on the ministry services portal.

Only in one set of checklists on the central MIREX page, which says 2 x 2 inches. The second set on the same page and every consulate page read say 4 x 5 cm. If your consulate has not told you otherwise, 4 x 5 cm is the size most Dominican offices state.

White. Each checklist reads "de frente y con fondo blanco", meaning front view on a white background. The Hanoi section and the VFS Global India list repeat white, and VFS adds that the photo must have no border.

One. Every visa type on the MIREX page that lists a photo asks for one (1) photograph, and the New York, Havana and Caracas pages repeat it. Hanoi also asks for a single recent passport-size photo, attached to the application form.

No consulate page or MIREX page read states a rule on glasses. The VFS Global list for India asks for a sharp photo in which you look directly at the camera. If you need your glasses, ask your consulate before you have the photo taken.

Not a separate one. The exceptional entry facility for civil, diplomatic, military and government visitors asks for a passport copy showing the personal details and photo, valid for at least 6 months, according to the Caracas page. The checklists that ask for a photo are for visa applications.

The MIREX page names the Dirección General de Migración only for formalising temporary residence after arrival. The visa itself is requested at an embassy or consulate. The DGM website refused automated access, so its own photo rules for residence permits were not read.
