Quick answer

What size is the Saint Lucia passport photo?

Saint Lucia's Immigration Department asks for two "passport size" photographs, full face and without a hat, and sets no dimensions on its own form. The New York consulate and the Taipei embassy both ask for 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) prints on a plain white background. Taipei wants them no more than three months old, Washington within six months. A recommender signs the back of one copy.

Saint Lucia issues its machine-readable passport through the Immigration Department. The government service page lists the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force as the office, and the government's passport page links Form A as the application. Saint Lucians who live overseas submit to the nearest consulate, which the government names as New York, Canada, Washington or Martinique. The e-passport has been in use since July 2022.

The Immigration Department does not publish one photo size. Form A asks for "Two (2) passport size copies of a recent photograph", taken full face without a hat, and gives no dimensions. The missions that do state a size say 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), which is how this page writes it. Washington asks for "passport size" without a figure, and an older Toronto guide, dated January 2021 and written before the e-passport, gives 50 mm high by 40 mm wide.

That makes the office or mission you apply through the best guide to the print you need. Every source read describes printed photographs, and the New York, Taipei and Washington guides all say a white background. Form A and the Washington guide add that the recommender signs the back of one copy. Nothing is published about head height, eye line or a digital upload for the passport photo.

Key requirements

  • No size on the in-country form

Form A, the Immigration Department's application, says only "passport size" and requires the photographs to be "taken full face without hat". The same wording sits in the Passport Act schedule. Neither gives millimetres or inches.

  • 2 x 2 inches where a mission states it

The New York consulate's general passport guide asks for passport photos "2x2" with a white background, and the Taipei embassy's e-passport guide of January 2024 says "2"x 2" (square)" and asks for one photo to be affixed on the form. The Washington embassy gives no dimensions.

  • Two copies, one signed on the back

Form A, the New York consulate and Washington ask for two copies, identical at Washington, while Taipei asks for passport photos with one stuck to the form. Under Form A, a recommender who is a prominent non-relative, such as a doctor, lawyer, minister of religion or justice of the peace, certifies a true likeness on the back of one. Washington says that signature must be written, not stamped.

  • Face fully visible

Washington asks for the face forward with ears, forehead and throat visible. Taipei says hair must not cover the ears and forehead. New York adds that there should be no teeth showing and that the head should be straight, looking directly ahead.

  • Recency depends on the office

Form A says "recent". Taipei says no more than three months old, and Washington says taken within the past six months. New York's guide gives no number of months, so ask the consulate.

  • Clothing rules at the missions

Taipei refuses tank tops, vests, halter tops and camouflage tops. New York bans white or camouflage clothing, turtle necks, tank tops and spaghetti straps. Washington asks for plain dark clothing and refuses halter tops and white items that blend with the background.

  • Edited photos at Washington

Washington's revised guide says photographs "blurred, dark, altered or over processed will not be accepted". No other source read states an editing rule, so this applies to applications handled there.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Ask the office or mission you will use for its size, because the sources differ.
  • Print two identical copies of one recent photograph.
  • Use a plain white background and face the camera straight on.
  • Keep ears, forehead and throat visible and hair off the face.
  • Wear plain, dark clothing, without straps or halter tops.
  • Have a non-relative recommender sign the back of one print, as Form A and Washington ask.

Don't

  • Do not wear a hat, scarf or headband in the photograph.
  • Do not wear a tank top, vest, halter top or camouflage top.
  • Do not wear white clothing against the white backdrop.
  • Do not use a blurred, dark, edited or over-processed picture.
  • Do not ask a relative to certify the photograph.
  • Do not assume the old Toronto 50 x 40 mm figure still applies.

How a Saint Lucia passport photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 2 × 2 in and background colour.

Correct
Open-mouth smile
Head tilted
Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

The sources conflict. Form A, the in-country application, says "Only prescription glasses will be accepted". The Taipei embassy says "Hats and glasses are not allowed", and the New York consulate lists "no glasses". The August 2022 Washington guide also said no glasses, while its revised guide does not mention eyewear.

For an application through a mission, leave your glasses off. If you apply to the Immigration Department in Saint Lucia, Form A says only prescription glasses are accepted. A 2021 Toronto guide went further and said no prescription or sun glasses.

Headwear and religious dress

Form A requires photographs taken "full face without hat". The Taipei embassy says hats are not allowed, the New York consulate bans hats, scarves and headbands, and Washington's guide from August 2022 refused "hats or scarves". The revised Washington guide asks for ears, forehead and throat to be visible.

No source read offers an exception for a religious or medical head covering. Because ears and forehead must be clear in several guides, someone who wears one should ask the Immigration Department or the consulate before having the photograph taken.

Babies and children

No source read sets a separate photograph rule for children, so the specification for the office you use applies to them too. Form A has a tick box for a child and one for an adult, and it states that "children will not be included on parent(s) passports", so every child needs a passport and a photograph of their own.

The mission guides add paperwork for minors rather than photo rules: a parent or legal guardian signs for a minor. Those signatures do not change how the picture is taken.

Only printed photographs are used. Form A asks for copies that go in with the paper application, one carries the recommender's signature, and Taipei asks for one to be stuck to the form. New York adds that the photo should not cut off the hair at the top and should be cut across the chest.

Toronto now handles e-passport applications by email, scanning documents first, then a Passport Officer makes contact, and no photograph rule is shown on that page. A digital photograph can be cropped to 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) and printed at a photo counter, but check the print rule of your mission first.

Where to submit the photo

In Saint Lucia, submit Form A with the fees and documents to the Immigration Department. The form says a first-time adult applicant pays in person and attends an interview there. From overseas, apply to the nearest consulate. Washington says passports are not issued in the United States and that applications are forwarded to Saint Lucia, and that first-time applicants must be interviewed by a consular officer.

New York accepts applications in person by appointment or by mail. Taipei asks for scanned documents by email and the originals to be submitted to the embassy. Because each mission writes its own guide, ask for the current photo specification before you print.

Saint Lucia passport photo FAQ

The Immigration Department's Form A says only "passport size". The New York consulate and the Taipei embassy both ask for 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). An older Toronto guide, written in 2021 before the e-passport, said 50 mm high by 40 mm wide, so check with your mission.

Plain white. New York, Taipei and Washington all ask for a white background. Form A names no colour, and the old Toronto guide accepted white or light coloured, so use white.

It depends on where you apply. Form A accepts prescription glasses only. The Taipei embassy and the New York consulate say no glasses, so remove them if you apply through a mission.

Form A says "recent". The Taipei embassy asks for no more than three months old and Washington for within six months. New York's guide gives no figure, so ask the consulate.

Form A, New York and Washington ask for two copies, identical at Washington. Under Form A and the Washington guide, a recommender who is not a relative, such as a doctor, lawyer, minister of religion or justice of the peace, signs the back of one to certify a true likeness. Washington says the signature must be written, not stamped.

No digital photo upload is described. The applications read are paper forms with printed photographs, and the Taipei guide asks for one photo to be stuck to the form.

The Washington embassy says photographs that are "blurred, dark, altered or over processed" will not be accepted. No editing rule is published by the Immigration Department or the other missions read, so avoid filters and background replacement.

No. Form A says children will not be included on parents' passports, so each child applies separately with their own photographs.
