Quick answer

What size is the Wallis and Futuna passport photo?

Residents of Wallis and Futuna hold the French passport. The photo is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in), and the territory's page asks for two identical prints that are recent, a perfect likeness, front-facing and bare-headed. The national norm adds a face of 32 to 36 mm and a plain light background without white; the emergency-passport page names light grey or light blue. You lodge the prints in person on Wallis or Futuna.

Wallis and Futuna is a French overseas collectivity made up of two island groups, Uvéa (Wallis) and Futuna, and its residents hold the French passport. There are no town halls to apply to. You lodge the application in person at the Circonscription d'Uvéa on Wallis or at the Délégation de Futuna, on a form handed out there and filled in with a black pen. That office enters your details and your fingerprints, then sends the file to the Administration supérieure, which is the prefect's office, for checking and validation. The passport is made by the Imprimerie nationale and comes back by sealed parcel to the office where you applied. The passport bureau at the Administration supérieure takes applications itself only as a fallback, and it alone issues emergency passports.

The territory's own page keeps the photo rule short: two identical identity photographs, recent and a perfect likeness, front-facing and bare-headed, format 35 mm x 45 mm. The same line appears for a first application and for a renewal. It gives no background colour for an ordinary passport. For that, and for the face size, the national norm in force applies, and the page for emergency passports adds a plain light grey or light blue background.

Key requirements

  • Two identical prints

The page asks for two photographs for a first passport and again for a renewal. National guidance mentions a single photo, but this is the territory's own list, so follow it. A 4x6 inch photo sheet of identical portraits lets you cut two.

  • Front-facing, bare head

The page asks for portraits showing the face from the front with nothing on the head. The national norm adds a straight head, eyes on the lens, a neutral expression and a closed mouth.

  • Recent, and a perfect likeness

The page says "recent" and "a perfect likeness" without a number. The national guidance puts the limit at under six months, and the picture must still look like you on the day.

  • Plain light background

For an emergency passport the page names a plain light background, light grey or light blue, in colour. It names no colour for the ordinary passport, where the national rule is a plain light colour and no white.

  • Face 32 to 36 mm tall

The arrêté of 5 February 2009 measures the face from the bottom of the chin to the top of the skull, hair excluded: 32 to 36 mm on the 45 mm height.

  • Counter capture is a fallback

The processing steps list scanning of the photo or, failing that, a live photo. French law lets the territorial circumscriptions of Wallis and Futuna capture the face image only where a professional photographer cannot supply it, so plan to bring prints.

  • Emergency photos can be taken on site

For an emergency passport the page says the photographs can be taken directly at the Administration supérieure.

  • Authorised photographer or booth

Under the service-public rule the photo is made by an authorised professional or in a booth using a system approved by the Ministry of the Interior.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Bring two identical prints in 35 x 45 mm.
  • Face the camera with a bare head.
  • Choose a plain light grey or light blue backdrop.
  • Check that the face is 32 to 36 mm tall.
  • Lodge the file yourself at Uvéa or Futuna.
  • Bring a minor with you, along with a parent or guardian.

Don't

  • Do not use a white background.
  • Do not wear a hat, scarf or headband.
  • Do not bring a single copy when two are asked for.
  • Do not reuse an old photo.
  • Do not send someone else to lodge the application.
  • Do not rely on the emergency passport for an ordinary trip.

Sample photos

How a Wallis and Futuna passport photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 35 × 45 mm, head height and background colour.

Correct
Open-mouth smile
Head tilted
Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

The territory's page says nothing about glasses, so the national norm on service-public applies. You do not have to wear them, and if you do, the frame must not be thick or hide the eyes, the lenses must be neither tinted nor coloured, and there must be no reflection. Taking them off is the simplest way to stay inside the rule.

Headwear and religious dress

The page asks for a bare head. The national norm gives hats, scarves and headbands as examples of what may not be worn, and the guidance read for this page publishes no exception for religious or medical reasons. Earrings and piercings are tolerated nationally if they leave the features of the face clearly visible.

Babies and children

Every child needs a personal passport, whatever the age, and cannot be listed on a parent's. A minor must be present both when the application is lodged and when the passport is collected, accompanied by a parent or guardian, and the page gives a validity of 5 years for minors against 10 for adults. It sets no separate photo rule for children, so the two prints follow the same format and look-straight-ahead rules.

You hand over paper. The page describes no upload and no e-photo code. During processing the Circonscription or Délégation scans the photo or, if it cannot, takes a photo of you live. A digital picture can be cropped to 35 x 45 mm and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter, but the national rule also requires the picture to come from an authorised professional or an approved booth.

Where to submit the photo

Go in person to the Circonscription d'Uvéa on Wallis or to the Délégation de Futuna, with the original documents on the page: proof of French nationality where needed, civil-status proof, proof of address or residence, a tax stamp and your photographs. A renewal needs the old passport. Your fingerprints and the photograph are recorded there, and you collect the passport at the same office.

An emergency passport is dealt with by the passport bureau of the Administration supérieure in Mata-Utu. It lasts one year and has no chip, and it is reserved for urgent family reasons such as a medical evacuation or a death, or for particular professional reasons. The Secrétaire général grants exceptions, and none is automatic.

Wallis and Futuna passport photo FAQ

It is 35 mm by 45 mm. The territory's passport page gives that format for both new applications and renewals. Under the national norm the face measures 32 to 36 mm from chin to top of skull, hair excluded.

Two identical ones. The page lists two photographs for a first passport and two for a renewal, and the page for identity cards also asks for two. Mainland guidance mentions one photo, but follow the local list because the local office reviews your file.

The page for ordinary passports does not name one. Its emergency-passport section asks for a plain light background, light grey or light blue, in colour. The national norm for French passports says a plain light colour and forbids white.

The territory's page is silent, so the national rule applies: glasses are optional, but a thick frame, a frame hiding the eyes, tinted lenses and reflections are not allowed. Most applicants take them off to avoid any doubt at the counter.

On the island where you are. The Circonscription d'Uvéa takes applications on Wallis and the Délégation de Futuna takes them on Futuna. You must go in person, and the passport is returned to the same office for collection.

Normally you bring prints and the office scans the photo. The page says a live photo is taken if scanning is not possible, and for emergency passports the photographs can be taken at the Administration supérieure. Do not count on it for an ordinary application.

People with an urgent journey for serious family reasons, such as a medical evacuation or a death, or for particular professional reasons. The passport office of the Administration supérieure issues it for one year, without a chip, and the Secrétaire général decides each exception.
