Algeria visa photo requirements
The 35 × 45 mm photo rules set by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Algeria for the Algeria visa, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Algeria visa photo?
Algeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks visa applicants for two recent identity photos with the application form completed in duplicate. Each consulate sets the details: Istanbul wants two photos of 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in) attached to the forms, Washington two passport pictures on a white background, and London two passport-size photos with your name in pencil on the back. No ministry-wide size is published.
Most foreigners need a visa from an Algerian embassy or consulate before they travel. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists diplomatic, service, courtesy, press, tourist, business, study, work, temporary work, family, medical, cultural and transit visas, and you apply at the post that covers your usual place of residence.
Every category starts from the same core file: a passport valid for at least six months with a photocopy, the form completed in duplicate, two recent identity photos, and travel insurance with repatriation assistance where it is required. The ministry gives no photo size or background, so the consulate's own page is the reference. The Consulate General in Istanbul is one that does give a size, 35 x 45 mm.
Photos are glued or attached to the paper forms rather than uploaded. The ministry's visa page describes no online e-visa; it mentions a regularisation visa issued on arrival only exceptionally and in emergencies. Under the 2008 law on foreigners, your fingerprints and an identity photo may also be recorded when you apply for a visa or at police checks.

Key requirements
- Two photos and two forms
The ministry's standard file has the form filled in twice and two recent identity photos. London asks for one photo affixed to each form, Ankara for two pictures attached to each form, and Istanbul attaches its two photos to the forms as well.
- The size comes from the consulate
No dimension is set for all posts. The Consulate General in Istanbul specifies 45 x 35 mm, height first; London, Canberra and Abu Dhabi only say passport size, and San Francisco a standard photo.
- White background in Washington
The embassy in Washington asks for two passport pictures with a white background, together with two forms typed online, each signed by hand.
- Names on the back in London
The Consulate General in London asks applicants to write their first and last names in pencil on the back of the photos, for tourist, business and work visas alike.
- One photo in San Francisco
The Consulate General in San Francisco, which serves applicants in 19 US states, asks for one recent standard photo per tourist or work visa application, pasted where the form shows.
- Apply where you live
London only processes applications from UK residents, and non-British applicants must prove residence there. British passport holders living abroad apply at the Algerian post for their country of residence.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Check the photo count and size on your consulate's page
- Attach a photo to each copy of the form where asked
- Use a white background for the Washington embassy
- Write your names in pencil on the back for London
- Use identical, recent photos for both forms
- Type the form on screen if your consulate asks
Don't
- Do not expect to upload the photo: the forms are paper
- Do not assume one size suits every consulate
- Do not send an incomplete file; London rejects or returns it
- Do not apply at a post outside your country of residence
- Do not buy non-refundable tickets before the visa is issued

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Babies and children
Children need a visa of their own. The London consulate says that children travelling with their parents need a visa whatever their age, and asks for a copy of the birth certificate and a parental authorisation for under-18s. In Washington one parent files the application with a travel authorisation signed by both parents and certified by a notary, and San Francisco requires a parental authorisation form for minors.
None of these consulates publishes a separate photo rule for children, so a child's file takes the same number of photos as an adult's.
Printed and digital photos
An Algerian visa is a paper process. You download the form from the consulate's website, complete it (Washington and San Francisco want it typed on screen), print and sign it, and attach the photos. There is no upload step, so the photos must be physical prints.
A digital photo can be cropped to 35 x 45 mm and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter, then cut to size.
Where to submit the photo
File at the embassy or consulate covering your usual residence. Foreign nationals who live in the host country add their residence card and a copy. The London consulate takes applications in person, by courier or by post without an appointment; postal applicants send a prepaid self-addressed special delivery envelope for the passport's return.
In the United States, the Consulate General in San Francisco takes applications from residents of the 19 states in its jurisdiction, with proof of address there, so check which post covers your state. Tourist groups on organised trips to the far-south wilayas, such as Tamanrasset, Illizi and Djanet, can instead receive a visa on arrival of up to 30 days through an approved Algerian travel agency, which files the request on a Ministry of Tourism platform.
How to get your Algeria visa photo
- Check the official requirements. Read the official specification for the Algeria visa: 35 × 45 mm print, white at the Washington embassy background. Check the rules on pose, expression, glasses and headwear below.
- Take the photo. Follow the key requirements: two photos and two forms; the size comes from the consulate; white background in Washington; names on the back in London.
- Prepare a print or digital file. An Algerian visa is a paper process. You download the form from the consulate's website, complete it (Washington and San Francisco want it typed on screen), print and sign it, and attach the photos.
- Submit the photo with your application. File at the embassy or consulate covering your usual residence. Foreign nationals who live in the host country add their residence card and a copy.
Algeria visa photo FAQ
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not set one. The Consulate General in Istanbul asks for 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in) photos, the same size as Algeria's own passport photos, while London, Canberra and Abu Dhabi only say passport size. Check the page of the post handling your file.
The ministry's standard list asks for two recent identity photos with the form completed twice. Most consulates follow this, attaching one photo to each form. San Francisco asks for one recent standard photo, and Ankara for two pictures attached to each of the two forms.
The Washington embassy asks for a white background. The Foreign Ministry and most other consulates name no colour, so follow your consulate; Algeria's own passport and ID card norm uses plain white.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' visa page describes visas issued by embassies and consulates, plus a regularisation visa granted on arrival only in exceptional, urgent cases. It describes no online e-visa. Organised tourist groups to the far south can get a visa on arrival through approved travel agencies.
No. Consulates ask you to download and print the form, sign it and glue or attach the photos to it. Washington and San Francisco want the form typed on screen before printing, but the photos are still physical prints.
Yes. Children need their own visa whatever their age, according to the London consulate, so their file includes its own photos. Minors also need a parental authorisation; Washington wants it signed by both parents and notarised.
The same as other visas at that consulate: London asks for two recent passport-size photos affixed to the two forms, and San Francisco one recent standard photo. The work visa file also needs the temporary work authorisation issued by the Algerian labour services and a repatriation commitment from the employer.
