Bangladesh passport photo requirements
The 89 × 127 mm photo rules set by Department of Immigration and Passports, e-Passport Online Registration Portal for the Bangladesh passport, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Bangladesh passport photo?
Most Bangladesh e-passport applicants need no photo: you are photographed in person at biometric enrolment, and no photo is attached to the form. The exception is a child under 6, who needs a 3R lab print, 89 x 127 mm (3.5 x 5 in), taken within 3 months with both ears visible. DIP's rule asks for a grey background; London and Dubai ask for white, and Berlin wants 10 x 15 cm. Avoid white or light clothes at enrolment.
Bangladeshi passports are issued by the Department of Immigration and Passports (DIP) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. For an e-passport you fill in the application on the e-Passport Online Registration Portal, book an appointment and then attend in person, either at the divisional or regional passport office for your present address in Bangladesh or at a Bangladesh mission abroad. DIP's form instructions, published in Bangla, say that no photo needs to be attached to the e-passport form or attested. Missions such as the embassy in Berlin tell applicants they must be present so that the photo for the passport can be taken there, together with fingerprints and iris scans.
Children under 6 are the exception. They are exempt from fingerprint and iris capture, so the application needs printed photos instead: DIP asks for a 3R size lab print, which missions describe as 89 x 127 mm (3.5 x 5 in). The background colour depends on who you ask. DIP's instructions say grey and the Paris embassy says light grey, while the High Commission in London and the Consulate General in Dubai ask for white. The embassy in Berlin asks for a single 10 x 15 cm photo instead.
The smaller sizes listed for this document come from the Machine Readable Passport (MRP), which the e-passport replaced. DIP's rules for the MRP form asked applicants under 15 to glue on a colour photo of each parent, 30 x 25 mm as DIP writes it, and have it attested. The embassy in Washington wrote in February 2025 that MRP re-issue was being phased out and would run only on a very limited scale until 30 June 2025.

In the official words
Exact wording from the official sources, quoted because the details matter:
Children under six years of age are exempt from fingerprint and iris capture but must attend with a 3R-format (89 × 127 mm) lab-printed photograph on a light grey background.
Key requirements
- Photo taken at enrolment
DIP's e-passport instructions say no photo has to be attached to the form or attested. Every applicant books an appointment and attends in person. The Washington embassy says there is no alternative to in-person enrolment, and Berlin says you must be present for the passport photo to be taken.
- Under 6: bring a 3R print
For applicants below 6 years of age DIP requires a 3R size lab print. London, Paris and Dubai give the size as 89 x 127 mm (3.5 x 5 in) and ask for two copies. Berlin instead asks for one 10 x 15 cm photo with a 2 cm gap around the child's head and shoulders.
- Background depends on the office
DIP's instruction for the child photo says grey background, and Paris asks for light grey. London and Dubai ask for a white background that covers at least 40% of the photo. Follow the office or mission that will receive the application.
- No white or light clothes
Berlin says white clothing is not acceptable when the photo is taken. London warns that light colours such as white, sky blue and ash may cause the capture to be refused by the system software. Children's photos should show colourful clothes.
- Child photo details
The child's face and body should be straight, both ears visible, and the photo no older than 3 months. Paris and London ask for these points in the same list as the 3R size.
- Medical exemptions
If a condition such as medical lenses, an amputated finger or a skin problem makes biometric capture difficult, London asks for a specific letter from your physician or GP at enrolment.
- Changing your photo
An MRP re-issue kept the old picture: Washington said the photo sent with an MRP re-issue was only for records and that anyone wanting a new photo had to apply for an e-passport.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Book the enrolment appointment when you submit the online form.
- Wear dark or colourful clothes to the appointment.
- Bring two 3R lab prints for a child under 6.
- Check which background your mission wants for a child photo.
- Keep both of the child's ears visible.
- Bring a doctor's letter if a condition affects fingerprints or iris capture.
Don't

- Do not wear white, sky blue or ash-coloured clothes.
- Do not use a home printout for a child's 3R photo.
- Do not use a child photo older than 3 months.
- Do not post an e-passport application to a mission that requires attendance.
Sample photos
How a Bangladesh passport photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 89 × 127 mm and background colour.
Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Glasses
The e-passport pages we read do not set a separate rule on glasses, because the photo is taken by the passport office or mission. DIP's rules for the old MRP form did: glasses could not be worn when the photo was taken. Expect to be asked to remove them at enrolment.
If you wear medical lenses that make iris capture difficult, the High Commission in London asks for a valid, specific letter from your physician, NHS service or GP, shown at the time of enrolment.
Headwear and religious dress
DIP's MRP rules listed a white cap, together with white clothes and glasses, as things that may not be worn when the passport photo is taken. Missions repeat the clothing point for the e-passport: Berlin refuses white clothing at the photo capture, and London warns against light colours.
None of the DIP or mission pages we read sets a rule for religious head coverings, so ask the office or mission handling your application if this applies to you.
Babies and children
Every child needs their own passport application. Children under 6 are exempt from fingerprints and iris scans, and the application uses a printed photo: a 3R lab print, 89 x 127 mm (3.5 x 5 in), two copies, no older than 3 months, with the child in colourful clothes, both ears visible and the background covering at least 40% of the picture. DIP's instruction says grey background; Paris says light grey; London and Dubai say white. Berlin asks for one 10 x 15 cm photo with the face and body straight and a 2 cm gap around the head and shoulders.
Attendance rules differ. London requires every applicant, newborns included, to attend. Dubai makes appearance mandatory except for children under 5. Berlin says a child under 6 need not attend, but the father or mother must. DIP's older MRP rules asked applicants under 15 to add a 30 x 25 mm colour photo of each parent.
Printed and digital photos
For an e-passport there is no photo file to upload and no print for anyone aged 6 or over. The 35 x 45 mm size often quoted online is not set by DIP or by the mission pages we read for this passport.
The other sizes belong to particular cases. A child under 6 needs a 3R (89 x 127 mm) lab print, or 10 x 15 cm in Berlin; a photo lab can print these, and Paris and DIP specify a lab print. The 25 x 30 mm option is the parents' photo from the MRP form, which DIP gives as 30 x 25 mm. We found no current DIP or mission page that sets a 40 x 50 mm or 45 x 55 mm passport photo. Washington's MRP re-issue form asked for a passport-size photo glued to the top left corner, with the parents' photos at the top right for applicants under 15.
Where to submit the photo
In Bangladesh, apply online on the e-passport portal and submit at the divisional passport and visa office or regional passport office for your present address. Diplomatic passport applicants go to the Consular and Welfare Wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or to DIP's head office.
Abroad, choose the mission that covers where you live when you fill in the form, then attend on your appointment date. Berlin serves residents of Germany, the Czech Republic and Kosovo; Paris serves France, Monaco and Ivory Coast. Washington asks applicants not to send e-passport papers by mail because they must come in person.

Bangladesh passport photo FAQ
For an e-passport, adults and children aged 6 or over do not supply a photo; it is taken during biometric enrolment. A child under 6 needs a 3R lab print, 89 x 127 mm (3.5 x 5 in). Some missions differ: Berlin asks for 10 x 15 cm. The 30 x 25 mm size belongs to parents' photos on the old MRP form.
Not for an applicant aged 6 or over. DIP's instructions say no photo needs to be attached to the e-passport form or attested, and missions such as Berlin take the passport photo on site. Bring the printed application with its barcode, your NID or online birth registration certificate and your current passport, if you have one, instead.
A 3R lab print, 89 x 127 mm (3.5 x 5 in), usually two copies taken within the last 3 months. The child should wear colourful clothes, both ears should show, and the background should cover at least 40% of the photo. Berlin asks for one 10 x 15 cm print instead.
It depends on where you apply. DIP's e-passport instructions ask for a grey background on the 3R lab print and Paris asks for light grey. The High Commission in London and the Consulate General in Dubai ask for white. Follow the instructions of the office or mission that receives the application.
Plan to take them off. DIP's MRP rules said glasses could not be worn when the photo was taken, and the e-passport pages we read set no different rule. If medical lenses make iris capture difficult, London asks for a letter from your doctor at enrolment.
Dark or colourful clothes. Berlin says white clothing is not acceptable when the photo is taken, and London warns that light colours such as white, sky blue and ash may lead the system to refuse the capture. DIP's MRP rules also ruled out a white cap.
No. The Washington embassy said the photo sent with an MRP re-issue was kept only for records and could not replace the photo in the passport. To get a new photo you apply for an e-passport, where the picture is taken at enrolment. MRP re-issue there was being phased out by 30 June 2025.
