Brazil visa photo requirements
The 35 × 45 mm photo rules set by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil (Itamaraty) for the Brazil visa, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Brazil visa photo?
Brazilian visas come only from Brazilian embassies and consulates, never at the border. US, Canadian and Australian visitors apply for an eVisa and upload a recent photo. Other visas use the ministry's online form, which takes a JPG, GIF or PNG of at least 431 x 531 pixels and up to 300 KB, plus a print on white glued to the receipt: 3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm) in London, 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) in Miami.
Itamaraty, Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, grants visas through its embassies, consulates-general, consulates and vice-consulates. It states that a Brazilian visa is never issued on Brazilian territory, so there is no visa at airports, ports or land borders. Whether you need one depends on reciprocity: nationals of countries that require visas from Brazilians generally need one too, and Brazil has waiver agreements with about 90 countries.
Since 10 April 2025, tourists and business visitors with passports from the United States, Canada and Australia need a visit visa again. They apply for an eVisa on the official portal run by VFS Global, which says the eVisa has the same validity and multiple entries as a consular visa, arrives by email as a PDF and is not stamped in the passport. The portal asks for a recent photograph and a colour copy of the passport bio page, with the photo specification supplied as a PDF.
Everyone else, and anyone who needs a temporary (VITEM) visa, applies through a consulate. You fill in the ministry's online form, upload the photo, signature and documents, print the Visa Request Form Receipt (RER), sign it and glue a printed photo onto it, then book an appointment through e-consular. If you apply from the United States, the print is the 2 x 2 inch passport size; in the UK it is 3.5 x 4.5 cm.

Key requirements
- eVisa: upload, no print
Citizens of the US, Canada and Australia apply on the VFS Global portal, which calls itself the only official site for the Brazilian eVisa. You upload a recent photograph and the passport bio page, pay online and receive the eVisa by email as a PDF to print and carry for boarding and arrival.
- Form photo: 431 x 531 pixels or more
The ministry's online visa form has its own upload button for the photo. It accepts only JPG, JPEG, GIF and PNG files of at least 431 x 531 pixels, and the file may not exceed 300 KB. The signature has a separate button with a minimum of 420 x 240 pixels.
- Upload before you attend
London accepts only applications in which the required documents have been uploaded to the form. Total upload capacity is roughly 2 MB, so keep the photo file small, and enable pop-ups in your browser or the file dialog will not open.
- Print glued to the receipt
After completing the form, print the RER, sign it and fix your photo in the field marked for it. Miami then asks applicants to upload an image of the signed receipt, photo included, to e-consular. For an applicant under 18, London wants the RER signed by both parents.
- Local print size
London asks for one recent passport photo against a white background in the local standard, 3.5 x 4.5 cm. Miami asks for passport size, 2 x 2 inches, with a white background and good quality.
- ICAO standard
Miami says the visa photo must match International Civil Aviation Organization standards and should preferably have a white or light-coloured background. It adds that 2 x 2 inch passport photos taken professionally at US pharmacies usually meet those standards.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Check whether your nationality can use the eVisa portal before booking a consulate.
- Save the form photo as JPG, GIF or PNG, at least 431 x 531 pixels and under 300 KB.
- Use a recent photo with a plain white background.
- Glue one print onto the signed RER for a consular visa.
- Print the approved eVisa and carry it when you travel.
- Apply well ahead: the portal suggests two months before travel.
Don't
- Do not expect a visa on arrival in Brazil.
- Do not upload a photo file larger than 300 KB to the ministry's form.
- Do not use a blue or patterned background.
- Do not send a consular application without the uploaded documents.
- Do not buy non-refundable tickets before the eVisa is issued.

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Babies and children
A visa application for anyone under 18 must come with written travel authorisation from both parents, the legal guardians or a court, according to Itamaraty. For a consular visa, London asks both parents to sign the minor's RER.
On the eVisa portal, minors upload their own recent photograph and passport bio page, plus a birth certificate, an authorisation letter signed by both parents and notarised with the date and stamp visible, and a colour copy of both parents' passport bio and signature pages. The child's photo follows the same rules as an adult's.
Printed and digital photos
Which you need depends on the route. The eVisa is fully online: the photo is uploaded, and the only thing you print is the approved eVisa. A consular visa needs both a file in the online form and a print glued onto the signed RER, which you bring with your passport and original documents.
A digital photo can be cropped to the required size and saved as a JPG under 300 KB for the form, then printed on a 4 x 6 inch sheet for the receipt. If you apply from the United States, crop it square to 2 x 2 inches; for London, use 3.5 x 4.5 cm.
Where to submit the photo
eVisa applicants use the official VFS Global portal. Once an application is complete and submitted, consular posts can take up to 10 business days to process it, and the portal advises applying two months before the trip and not buying tickets until the visa is issued.
For other visas, apply to the Brazilian consulate whose jurisdiction covers where you live and book the appointment on e-consular. Miami accepts non-eVisa applications only in person. If you are already in Brazil and want to extend a stay, the Federal Police handles it; a visa itself cannot be obtained there.

- Prepare a print or digital file. Which you need depends on the route. The eVisa is fully online: the photo is uploaded, and the only thing you print is the approved eVisa.
- Submit the photo with your application. eVisa applicants use the official VFS Global portal.
Brazil visa photo FAQ
It depends on where you apply. Consulates use the local passport size for the print: 3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm) in London and 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) in Miami, with a white background. The online form also needs a photo file of at least 431 x 531 pixels.
A recent photograph uploaded to the VFS Global eVisa portal, along with a colour copy of the passport bio page. Nothing is printed for the application itself; you print the approved eVisa and carry it when you travel.
The photo field of the ministry's online form accepts JPG, JPEG, GIF or PNG files of at least 431 x 531 pixels, with a maximum of 300 KB. All uploads together are limited to roughly 2 MB, so compress scans of other documents too.
For a consular visa, yes: fix one print onto the signed Visa Request Form Receipt (RER) and bring it to the appointment. For an eVisa, no: the photo is uploaded and the approved visa is emailed to you as a PDF.
No. Itamaraty says Brazilian visas are never granted on Brazilian territory, including airports, ports and border posts, and neither it nor the Federal Police can admit a foreigner without the proper visa. Apply in advance online or at a consulate.
Brazil works on reciprocity and has visa waiver agreements with about 90 countries. Nationals of countries that require visas from Brazilians generally need one. Since 10 April 2025 visitors from the United States, Canada and Australia need a visa again, available as an eVisa.
For the Miami consulate, usually yes. It says 2 x 2 inch passport photos taken professionally at US pharmacies usually meet the ICAO standard it requires, preferably with a white or light-coloured background.
