Denmark visa photo requirements
The 35 × 45 mm photo rules set by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark for the Denmark visa, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Denmark visa photo?
For a Danish visa or residence permit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks you to attach one passport photo no older than six months. Missions that give a size ask for 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in), in colour, on a light background; the Embassy in Islamabad wants the head 30 to 36 mm from chin to top of head. Your facial image and fingerprints are also recorded in person at the visa centre, mission or immigration office.
Visas for Denmark are handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through Danish embassies and consulates and the VFS Global visa application centres that take applications for them. Residence permits are decided by the Danish Immigration Service or the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI), depending on the permit. Rules shared by every Schengen state are on the Schengen visa page; this page covers what Danish missions and the residence permit process ask for.
For a short-stay Schengen visa you fill in and pay for the application online in ApplyVisa, print and sign the cover letter, and hand in your documents and biometrics at the visa application centre. The Ministry's visa page asks you to attach a passport photo no older than six months, and the centre captures your fingerprints and a photo. Fingerprints given for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months do not have to be given again.
For a residence permit, applicants who are not EU, EEA or Swiss citizens have their facial image and fingerprints recorded, normally within 14 days of applying online or by post; the Immigration Service has currently extended its deadline to six weeks. Recording takes place at a Danish mission, a visa application centre acting for one, the Immigration Service's Citizen Service or a SIRI branch office. If you do not give a facial photo, the application is rejected.

Key requirements
- One print, if your mission lists it
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs tells visa applicants to attach a passport photo no older than six months. Missions set their own checklists: Islamabad asks for one passport-size colour photo on a light background, while the June 2026 tourist checklist of the Consulate General in New York lists no photo, and applicants there have their biometrics taken at VFS Global offices.
- Size and head
Where a size is given it is 35 x 45 mm. The Embassy in Islamabad specifies a head of 30 to 36 mm from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, with the applicant facing the camera directly.
- Live biometric photo
Visa applicants appear in person so that ten fingerprints and a fresh photograph can be collected. Before the photo is recorded you may be asked to remove glasses or adjust a head covering that hides facial features.
- Residence permits from Dubai: white background
The April 2026 checklist of the Consulate General in Dubai for long-term permits asks for one passport photo, at most six months old, on a white background and measuring 35 x 45 mm, along with the receipt for the online application and your passport.
- Representation by another country
Where Denmark has no mission or visa centre, another Schengen state may process visas on its behalf, and you cannot use ApplyVisa. For a residence permit lodged at a foreign mission under a representation agreement, you submit one facial photo and show valid ID, and your biometrics are recorded after you enter Denmark.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Read the checklist of the mission or visa centre you will use.
- Bring one 35 x 45 mm colour photo where the checklist asks for it.
- Use a photo taken within the last six months.
- Book your biometrics appointment soon after applying online.
- Bring your passport to the biometrics appointment.
Don't
- Do not use a photo older than six months.
- Do not let glasses or a head covering hide your features at the biometric capture.
- Do not miss the deadline for recording biometrics after an online application.
- Do not use ApplyVisa where another Schengen state represents Denmark.

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Glasses
No Danish mission page read for this guide sets a glasses rule for the printed photo. For the live capture, the visa FAQ of the Danish missions in China says you may be asked to remove your glasses if they hide facial features. For a printed photo, untinted glasses without glare are the safe choice, as the Danish passport rules require.
Headwear and religious dress
The same China FAQ says applicants may be asked to adjust a head covering that hides facial features before the photo is recorded. Danish missions publish no separate head covering rule for the printed visa photo, so keep the whole face, from forehead to chin, uncovered.
Babies and children
Children under 12 are exempt from giving fingerprints for a visa. For residence permits, children under 6 have only their facial image recorded, while children aged 6 and over give a facial image, fingerprints and a signature.
A child under 18 living with the custody holder does not need a residence card. If no card is requested, the application must include a passport photo of the child, and the child's biometrics are not recorded.
Printed and digital photos
The digital facial image for a Danish visa or residence permit is taken by staff at the visa application centre, mission or immigration office, together with your fingerprints, so there is nothing to prepare for that step. The Danish pages used here publish no pixel or file-size rules for an uploaded photo.
What you may need is a print: one 35 x 45 mm passport photo, depending on the checklist. A digital photo can be cropped to that size and printed on a 4 x 6 inch sheet at a photo counter.
Where to submit the photo
Visas: apply in ApplyVisa, then attend the VFS Global centre or Danish mission that serves the country where you legally stay, with the signed cover letter, your documents and, where listed, the photo. Only applicants staying legally in a country may apply there.
Residence permits: apply through New to Denmark, then have your biometrics recorded at a Danish mission, a visa application centre acting for one, the Immigration Service's Citizen Service or a SIRI branch office. Always bring your passport, and for an online application the submission receipt.
How to get your Denmark visa photo
- Check the official requirements. Read the official specification for the Denmark visa: 35 × 45 mm print, light background. Check the rules on pose, expression, glasses and headwear below.
- Take the photo. Follow the key requirements: one print, if your mission lists it; size and head; live biometric photo; residence permits from Dubai: white background.
- Prepare a print or digital file. The digital facial image for a Danish visa or residence permit is taken by staff at the visa application centre, mission or immigration office, together with your fingerprints, so there is nothing to prepare for that step.
- Submit the photo with your application. Visas: apply in ApplyVisa, then attend the VFS Global centre or Danish mission that serves the country where you legally stay, with the signed cover letter, your documents and, where listed, the photo.
Denmark visa photo FAQ
Danish missions that state a size ask for 35 x 45 mm. The Embassy in Islamabad adds that the head should measure 30 to 36 mm from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, with you facing the camera directly. Check the checklist of your own mission.
It depends on the mission. The Ministry's visa page tells applicants to attach a passport photo, and the Islamabad and Dubai checklists ask for one, but the June 2026 tourist checklist of the Consulate General in New York does not list a photo at all.
The Consulate General in Dubai asks for a white background, 35 x 45 mm and no more than six months old. Other Danish missions ask for a light background, which a white one also meets.
At a Danish embassy or consulate general, a visa application centre that takes applications for one, the Immigration Service's Citizen Service, or a SIRI branch office. If you applied online or by post, you normally have 14 days to appear, currently extended to six weeks for the Immigration Service.
Children aged 6 and over have a facial image, fingerprints and signature recorded, and younger children only a facial image. If a child living with the custody holder does not request a residence card, attach a passport photo of the child to the application instead.
No. If your fingerprints were taken for a Schengen visa less than 59 months before the new application, you do not have to give them again, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In some countries, yes. Where Denmark has no mission or visa application centre, another Schengen state may process visas on its behalf. You then cannot use ApplyVisa, and a visa for Greenland or the Faroe Islands cannot be applied for through the representation agreement.
