Quick answer

What size is the Estonia visa photo?

For a Schengen visa from an Estonian embassy or VFS Global centre, bring one colour print no more than six months old. Estonia's foreign ministry gives no size, but the VFS checklists for India, the UAE and the USA ask for 35 x 45 mm on a white background, and VFS Turkey says 35 to 40 mm wide on a light one. The face fills 70 to 80% of the frame. The photo is scanned, or a new one taken, when you lodge the application in person.

Estonia issues Schengen (C) visas through its diplomatic missions under the EU Visa Code. If Estonia is your only or main destination, you apply at an Estonian representation in your country of residence, or at the consulate of another Schengen state that represents Estonia there. Estonian honorary consuls cannot process visas. In 15 countries, including India, China, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs receives applications through VFS Global visa application centres.

Every application is lodged in person, by appointment, and each applicant, children included, needs a separate appointment. You complete the form online in Estonia's visa pre-application system, print it and sign it. At lodging your biometric identifiers are collected: a photograph, scanned or taken at the time, and ten fingerprints, unless you gave fingerprints for an earlier Schengen visa less than 59 months before.

Estonia's own visa pages simply list a photograph and link to the ICAO photograph guidelines published by the European Commission. The exact print wording comes from the checklist of the VFS centre or embassy where you apply, and it is not identical everywhere, so read the one for your location.

Key requirements

  • The size depends on the centre

The Estonian foreign ministry does not state a print size. The VFS checklists in India and the UAE and the VFS page for the USA ask for 35 x 45 mm. VFS Turkey, like the ICAO guidelines, gives a width of 35 to 40 mm.

  • White is the common request

VFS India, the UAE and the USA ask for a white background, VFS Ireland accepts white or light, and VFS Turkey and the ICAO guidelines want a plain light-coloured one. A plain white background fits every list quoted here.

  • No software corrections

The checklist of the Embassy of Estonia in New Delhi asks for a photo with no software corrections, and the UAE checklist says without any software alterations. Do not retouch the picture or swap its background.

  • Scanned at lodging

Your print is not simply filed with the papers. When you lodge the application, the photograph is scanned as one of your biometric identifiers, or a new one is taken, and an application without a photograph is not admissible.

  • Printed, signed form

The form is completed online, printed and signed at the end of each page; VFS India asks for it to be signed twice. The online system warns that only a signed application is valid and that a photo of the applicant must be added to it.

  • Photo service at some centres

VFS Turkey lists a photograph service among its optional extras, so a missing or faulty print can be replaced there. Elsewhere, check the centre's list of optional services before you rely on it.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Read the checklist of the VFS centre or embassy where you will apply.
  • Use a plain white background unless your centre asks for light.
  • Book a separate appointment for each applicant, children included.
  • Print the online form, sign it and add your photo.
  • Bring the print even though it will be scanned.

Don't

  • Do not retouch or alter the photo with software.
  • Do not wear glasses at the VFS centres in the USA or Turkey.
  • Do not take your application to an Estonian honorary consul.
  • Do not use a photo older than six months.

Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small

Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

Glasses rules depend on where you apply. VFS Global's Estonia pages for short-stay visas in the USA and for Turkey say no glasses. The ICAO guidelines that Estonia's foreign ministry links from its visa pages accept glasses if your eyes are clearly visible, the lenses show no flash reflection and are not tinted, and the frames cover no part of your eyes. If you apply at one of those two VFS centres, take your glasses off.

Headwear and religious dress

The ICAO guidelines linked by the foreign ministry permit a head covering only for religious reasons, and your facial features from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, and both edges of the face, must still show clearly. Hats and caps are not accepted.

Babies and children

Children need their own photo and their own appointment: Estonia requires a separate appointment for every applicant, including minors. The parent holding parental responsibility, or a legal guardian, signs a minor's application form. Children under 12 give no fingerprints, but their photograph is still collected at lodging.

The Estonian Schengen process has no photo upload. The online form is a pre-application that you print, so the photo you bring is a print, and the mission or VFS centre scans it or takes a new one when you lodge. Use high-quality photo paper; a digital photo can be cropped to 35 x 45 mm and printed at a photo counter.

Where to submit the photo

Lodge the application at the Estonian embassy or consulate that handles visas in your country of residence, or at the VFS Global centre where Estonia uses one. Where Estonia has no visa-issuing presence, another Schengen state may represent it, and you apply at that state's consulate.

Apply at least 15 days, and no earlier than six months, before the trip. The foreign ministry also publishes harmonised lists of supporting documents for certain countries, but they add no photo rules, so the VFS or embassy checklist remains the reference for the photo.

How to get your Estonia visa photo

  1. Check the official requirements. Read the official specification for the Estonia visa: 35 × 45 mm print, white at VFS India, UAE and USA background. Check the rules on pose, expression, glasses and headwear below.
  2. Take the photo. Follow the key requirements: the size depends on the centre; white is the common request; no software corrections; scanned at lodging.
  3. Prepare a print or digital file. The Estonian Schengen process has no photo upload. The online form is a pre-application that you print, so the photo you bring is a print, and the mission or VFS centre scans it or takes a new one when you lodge.
  4. Submit the photo with your application. Lodge the application at the Estonian embassy or consulate that handles visas in your country of residence, or at the VFS Global centre where Estonia uses one.

Estonia visa photo FAQ

Estonia's foreign ministry gives no size. Most VFS centres that take Estonian applications ask for 35 x 45 mm: the checklists for India and the UAE and the VFS page for the USA say so. VFS Turkey says 35 to 40 mm wide. Check the checklist for the centre where you apply.

Your photograph is collected as a biometric identifier when you lodge the application: the print you bring is scanned, or a photo is taken at the time. You still need to bring one, because an application is admissible only if the applicant has submitted a photograph.

Not at the VFS centres in the USA or Turkey, whose Estonia pages say no glasses. The ICAO guidelines linked by the foreign ministry allow untinted glasses without reflections if your eyes are clearly visible, so other centres may accept them. Taking them off is the safe choice.

At the VFS centres in India, the UAE and the USA, yes. VFS Ireland accepts white or light, and VFS Turkey and the ICAO guidelines ask for a plain light-coloured background. White meets every version, so it is the safest choice.

No. You fill in the form online, but it must be printed, signed and lodged in person at an Estonian representation or VFS centre, with your photo added to the application. The online system states that only a signed application is valid.

Taken within the last six months. The VFS checklist for India and the VFS page for the USA both set that limit, and so do the ICAO photograph guidelines that the Estonian foreign ministry links from its Schengen visa page.
