Quick answer

What size is the Djibouti passport photo?

The passport application form of the Djibouti Police Nationale shows a 35 x 45 mm box for the applicant's photo, and the government portal lists 2 photos of 35 x 45 mm. The embassy in Berlin asks for three biometric photos, and the embassy in Brussels two passport-format photos. No background, head size or recency rule is published in the sources read. Adults must present a national ID card.

Djibouti passports are applied for with the Direction de l'Immigration et des Renseignements Généraux, according to the government's e-government portal. The paper application form carries the heading of the Ministry of the Interior, Police Nationale, Service Passeport. Applicants must be Djiboutian. Adults present a national identity card, students a school certificate, and employees and civil servants a work certificate. Minors need a birth certificate and a parental authorisation, plus copies of their parents' identity documents.

Every passport issued since 2 February 2017 is biometric, with a chip holding the digitised image of the fingerprints (Decree No. 2017-053/PR/MI, as cited by the portal). The same portal page lists the photo requirement in one line: 2 photos of 35 x 45 mm. The form itself prints the same size inside its photo box and adds "NE PAS AGRAFER", which means do not staple.

Abroad, Djiboutian embassies take applications, and their lists differ. The Berlin embassy asks for three biometric identity photos and says a new passport, valid for 10 years, must be requested in person. The Brussels embassy asks for two identity photos in passport format. Its older request form shows a 3.5 x 3.5 box, which is the only 35 x 35 mm reference found, so check your own embassy before you print.

Key requirements

  • 35 x 45 mm on the application form

The Police Nationale passport form prints "Photo demandeur (35 x 45 mm)" in the applicant's photo box. The government portal lists "2 Photos (35x45 mm)" among the conditions, and the Berlin embassy's form shows the same 35 x 45 mm box.

  • Photo count depends on where you apply

In Djibouti the portal lists 2 photos. The Berlin embassy lists "trois photos d'identité (biométrique)", which means three biometric identity photos. The Brussels embassy lists "Deux photos d'identité (format passeport)", two passport-format photos, for adults and for minors.

  • Do not staple

Each photo box on the Police Nationale form says "NE PAS AGRAFER". Hand the photos in loose or follow the instruction at the counter or embassy, and do not staple them to the form.

  • Children on a parent's passport

The form lets an applicant ask for up to four Djiboutian children under 15 to be entered on the passport. It has four boxes marked "Photo enfant (35 x 45 mm)", one per child. For minors the portal asks for a birth certificate, a parental authorisation and copies of the parents' identity documents.

  • National ID card for adults

The portal says adults must present a national identity card. The Berlin embassy asks for the original card and the expired passport, a copy of the residence permit, a student card for students and two signed copies of the form.

  • Biometric passport since 2017

The portal says all passports issued since 2 February 2017 are biometric, with a chip holding the digitised fingerprint image. The Berlin embassy asks for biometric identity photos, but no source read says what makes a photo biometric.

  • No background or head-size rule published

None of the pages or forms read states a background colour, a head size, a glasses rule or a maximum age of the photo. If your office does not give them, ask it before you print.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Use a 35 x 45 mm photo for the Police Nationale form.
  • Bring two photos in Djibouti, and check how many your embassy wants.
  • Keep the photos loose, because the form says not to staple them.
  • Bring your national ID card if you are an adult.
  • For a child, bring the birth certificate and the parental authorisation.
  • Ask the office or embassy about the background colour before you print.

Don't

  • Do not staple the photos to the form.
  • Do not assume 35 x 35 mm: the Police Nationale form shows 35 x 45 mm.
  • Do not copy a background colour or head size from another country's rules, because none is published here.
  • Do not send a digital file: no source read accepts one for a passport.
  • Do not prepare three photos or two without checking the embassy's own list.

Sample photos

How a Djibouti passport photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 35 × 45 mm and background colour.

Correct
Open-mouth smile
Head tilted
Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

No glasses rule is published on the portal, on the Police Nationale form or on the embassy pages read. The Berlin embassy asks for biometric photos without defining the term, so wearing glasses is a question for the embassy or office that takes your application.

Headwear and religious dress

No rule on head coverings is published in the sources read. Ask the office or embassy that receives your application, and take the photo with the face fully visible in case it is refused.

Babies and children

The Police Nationale form has four child boxes of 35 x 45 mm for children under 15 entered on a parent's passport, each marked not to be stapled. For minors the portal asks for a birth certificate, a parental authorisation and copies of the parents' identity documents.

The Brussels embassy lists, for minors, copies of both parents' identity cards, an extract of the Djiboutian birth certificate, the residence card of the host country and two passport-format photos. It also links a parental authorisation form for a national passport, signed by the father. No special photo rule for babies or small children is published.

All the sources read describe printed photos handed in with a paper form. The portal links an application form to print, and the form has framed boxes for the photos. No page describes an online upload for a passport photo, so there is no pixel size or file size.

A digital photo can be cropped to 35 x 45 mm and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter, then cut into prints. Keep the prints unstapled and loose, as the form asks.

Where to submit the photo

In Djibouti, the portal names the Direction de l'Immigration et des Renseignements Généraux and gives deposit hours of 8:00 to 17:00, Sunday to Thursday. The form's second page is reserved for the administration and records the opinion of the Director General of the National Police, which is why the form carries the Police Nationale heading.

Abroad, apply to the Djiboutian embassy or consulate for your country, and check its list, because the embassies read differ. The Berlin embassy requires you to appear in person for a new passport. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes a list of Djibouti's embassies and consulates abroad.
