At a glance

Two Iranian documents are covered here. An Iranian passport applied for at an embassy or consulate needs three 3 x 4 cm (30 x 40 mm) photos on plain white, with a headscarf for women. The Iran e-visa takes no print: it needs a colour JPEG of at least 400 x 600 pixels, 10 KB to 500 KB, on a white or light background.

Overview

Both documents come from Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through two different systems. Iranian citizens living abroad request passports in Mikhak, the ministry's consular system, and collect them in person at an embassy or consulate; the ministry's lists ask for printed photos, while Mikhak takes uploaded document images of up to 300 KB. Foreign visitors use the separate e-visa portal, where the photo is only ever a file.

The head covering rules are not the same. For passports, the ministry says women applicants should wear a headscarf and that hats, glasses and neck scarves are not allowed. The e-visa portal requires no headscarf and accepts a religious covering worn daily if the face stays fully visible, while the UK government advises women and girls aged 10 or over to wear one in visa photos.
