At a glance

Pakistani passports use a 35 x 45 mm photo, uploaded online as 350 x 467 pixels; at passport offices the photo is taken for you. Visa photos are uploaded to the online visa system in the 35 x 45 mm format, up to 350 KB. The NADRA documents (CNIC and NICOP, Pakistan Origin Card, Child Registration Certificate or B-Form, and Family Registration Certificate) have no photo size: NADRA captures the picture, and accepts uploads only for children under 3.

Overview

A Pakistani passport photo is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in) on a plain white background, and the online passport portal of the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGI&P) takes it as a 350 x 467 pixel colour JPEG of no more than 3 MB.

Three channels decide how a Pakistani document photo works. DGI&P, under the Ministry of Interior, issues passports: its offices and Pakistan missions photograph you at the counter, so only the online portal needs a file from you. Visitors apply for visas through the Pakistan Online Visa System, uploading a 35 x 45 mm format photo of up to 350 KB.

NADRA issues the identity documents and takes their photos itself. For the CNIC, NICOP and Pakistan Origin Card it captures the picture at registration centres, missions and mobile vans, or live in the PakID app; a photo file is accepted only for children under 3. The Child Registration Certificate (B-Form) needs a photograph from age 3, and below 3 only when it will be used for a passport; parents can capture or upload it in PakID. The Family Registration Certificate needs the applicant's photo and photos of family members under 18 who hold a CRC or Juvenile Card. NADRA publishes no millimetre or pixel size for any of these.

Frequently asked questions

Only a few. The online passport portal needs a 350 x 467 pixel colour JPEG on white; the online visa system needs a photo of up to 350 KB in the 35 x 45 mm format; and NADRA accepts an uploaded photo only for children under 3. Passport offices and NADRA centres take the photo themselves.

Both use the 35 x 45 mm format with a plain white background, but the uploads differ. The passport portal asks for a 350 x 467 pixel JPEG of up to 3 MB, while the visa system caps the file at 350 KB and publishes no pixel size.

Not one you bring. NADRA photographs you at a registration centre, mission or mobile van, or you capture a live photo in the PakID app against a plain or white background. Uploads are allowed only for children under 3.

From age 3 the child is photographed for the CRC, with iris scans, and fingerprints are added from age 10. Under 3 no biometrics are needed, but NADRA requires a photo on the CRC when it will be used for a passport. In PakID a parent can capture or upload the child's photograph.

NADRA asks for the applicant's photograph and photographs of all family members under 18 who hold a CRC or Juvenile Card. At a centre, children are photographed if their CRC was issued without a photo.

Only on some mission paper forms. The High Commission for Pakistan in New Delhi, for example, asks for six 2 x 2 inch front-face photos with an application for a passport in lieu of a lost one. The DGI&P portal uses the 35 x 45 mm shape at 350 x 467 pixels, and the online visa system the 35 x 45 mm format, applicants in the United States included.
