At a glance

Nepal's three documents treat photos differently. The e-passport photo is taken at the enrolment centre, and only children under 5 bring 35 x 45 mm prints. A tourist visa or ETA needs a recent photo on white uploaded to the online form, with 35 x 45 mm prints at some missions. The NRN ID card takes a 35 x 45 mm photo uploaded at 300 x 400 pixels; the National Identity Card photo is taken at registration.

Overview

Each document has its own issuer. The Department of Passports, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issues e-passports through District and Area Administration Offices in Nepal and Nepali missions abroad, and its staff photograph applicants at enrolment. The Department of Immigration runs visas, including the Electronic Travel Authorisation, through its Nepali Port forms, which take an uploaded photo. NRN ID cards come from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs via its missions and also use an uploaded photo, while the Department of National ID and Civil Registration captures National Identity Card photos itself.

In practice, only visitors applying for a visa and Nepalis abroad applying for an NRN card need to prepare a photo file, and parents of children under 5 need prints for a passport.

Frequently asked questions

Not usually. The Department of Passports photographs every applicant at the enrolment centre. Missions in London, Canberra and Dhaka ask parents of children under 5 to bring 35 x 45 mm borderless prints with a white background.

A recent passport-size photo with a white background, uploaded as JPG, JPEG or PNG of up to 2 MB to the Department of Immigration's ETA or mission form. Some embassies also want prints; Beijing asks for 35 x 45 mm.

The Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) ID card. Embassies in Paris and Washington ask for a 35 x 45 mm photo uploaded at 300 x 400 pixels. The National Identity Card photo is taken at the registration station, so you supply none.

For applicants over 16 applying in Nepal, yes. The Department of Passports does not require it from children under 16 or from applicants who apply through a Nepali mission abroad.
