Quick answer

What size is the Jersey passport photo?

Jersey asks for 2 identical printed photos, each 45 mm high and 35 mm wide (35 x 45 mm), in colour on plain white photographic paper with no border. The background must be plain cream or light grey, the photo must be taken in the last month, and it must be unaltered by computer software. No head height is published. A new online application service opens on 16 November 2026.

Jersey passports are British passports. The Jersey Passport Office, part of Jersey Customs and Immigration Service, issues the Jersey variant on behalf of the Crown, and the booklet is printed and delivered from the UK. It serves people who live on the island and people in the UK who were born in Jersey. If you were not born in Jersey and now live in the UK, you apply through the UK offices, and if you live abroad you make an overseas application on GOV.UK.

Until now the process has combined online and paper steps. You complete the application on the Jersey government website, receive a copy and a payment receipt by email, print the application, sign it and send it in with two identical photographs and any supporting documents. A paper form can be requested by email instead. From Monday 16 November 2026 a new online passport application service replaces that routine. The Jersey pages read for this guide describe printed photos only, so every rule below applies to the prints, not to a digital upload.

Jersey publishes its own photo requirements page. The neighbouring islands' web pages point to guidance notes for the detail, whereas Jersey spells out the size, background, quality and pose for a printed photo, and its rules line up with those HM Passport Office sets for printed photos in the UK. The only thing missing is a head height: the page asks for a close-up of the full head and upper shoulders without giving a measurement.

Passport photo requirements[1]

Key requirements

  • Exactly 45 mm by 35 mm

Jersey gives one measurement: each print is 45 mm high and 35 mm wide. There is no separate head height or eye position, so frame yourself as a close-up of the full head and upper shoulders, with nothing else in the picture.

  • Cream or light grey, with contrast

Stand against a plain cream or light grey wall or screen. You must stand out clearly from it, and there must be no shadows on your face or on the background behind you, no other people and no objects.

  • Face forward, mouth closed

Look straight at the camera with a plain expression and your mouth closed. Your eyes must be open and visible, no hair may cross them, nothing may cover your face, and the picture must be free of red eye.

  • No software changes

Jersey lists "unaltered by computer software" among the conditions for a printed photo. Treat retouching, filters and any digital change to the picture or its background as outside the rules.

  • A fresh photo, taken in the last month

You need a new photo for each new passport, even when your appearance has not changed. Jersey warns that your application will be delayed if the photos do not meet the rules.

  • Print quality counts

The prints must be made to a professional standard: clear, in focus, in colour, on plain white photographic paper with no border, without creases or tears, and unmarked on both sides unless a countersignatory has to write on one.

  • Two identical prints

Provide 2 identical printed photos with every application. When a countersignatory is required, one of them is certified on the back.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Order 2 identical prints from one image.
  • Choose a plain cream or light grey backdrop that contrasts with your clothes and hair.
  • Light your face evenly so that no shadow falls on it or on the wall.
  • Keep the prints flat and clean on both sides until a countersignatory has seen them.
  • Have the picture taken within the month before you apply.
  • Print on plain white photographic paper with no border.

Don't

  • Do not retouch, filter or otherwise alter the picture with software.
  • Do not reuse a photo from an earlier passport.
  • Do not wear sunglasses or tinted glasses.
  • Do not leave hair across your eyes or wear anything that covers your face.
  • Do not include other people, toys or objects in the picture.
  • Do not write on or mark the prints yourself.

Sample photos

How a Jersey passport photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 35 × 45 mm and background colour.

Correct
Open-mouth smile
Head tilted
Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

Do not wear glasses unless you have to. If you must keep them on, they cannot be sunglasses or tinted, and your eyes must not be hidden by the frames or by any glare, reflection or shadow.

Headwear and religious dress

A head covering is allowed only for religious or medical reasons. Even then, nothing may cover your face, and your eyes must stay open and visible.

Babies and children

A child must be alone in the picture. Babies must not hold toys or use a dummy. Under-6s do not need to look at the camera or keep a plain expression, and babies under one need not have their eyes open. You may support a baby's head with a hand, as long as the hand does not show. A child passport always needs a countersignatory, and the same 2 identical prints.

Jersey's current rules are for prints only: 2 identical photos, 45 mm by 35 mm, that you attach to the printed application or to a paper form. There is no pixel size or file limit on the pages read. The gov.je passport pages say that from Monday 16 November 2026 applicants can use a new online passport application service, but they do not yet describe how photographs are supplied through it. The Isle of Man Government says the Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man launches happen together and that applicants will upload or provide a digital photograph. Check the Jersey page again before you order prints after that date.

Where to submit the photo

Under the current routine, finish the application on the Jersey government website, then print it and the emailed receipt, sign the right box and enclose the photographs with supporting documents. The page lists two return points under its paper-application heading: the Customer Hub in Union Street, St Helier, for hand delivery, and the Passport Office at Jersey Customs and Immigration Service, St Helier, by post. A paper form arrives by post if you email the Passport Office your name and address, and you can then pay online by card.

A countersignatory signs the form and one photo for a first adult passport, a child passport, a lost, stolen or damaged replacement, and a renewal where you can no longer be recognised from the old photo. On the back of one print they write that it is a true likeness of you, with your title and full name, then sign and date it. They must be over 18, hold a current British passport, have known you for 2 years and live in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man. Relatives, partners and people at your address cannot sign.

Jersey passport photo FAQ

Jersey says the photo must be 45 mm high and 35 mm wide, which is 35 x 45 mm. You need 2 identical printed photos. The page gives no head height, only a close-up of your full head and upper shoulders.

A plain cream or light grey background, with you in clear contrast to it. There must be no shadows on your face or behind you, and no other objects or people in the picture.

Only if you have to. They cannot be sunglasses or tinted glasses, and your eyes must not be covered by the frames or by glare, reflection or shadow. If your lenses catch the light, take the glasses off if you can.

It must have been taken in the last month, and each new passport needs a new photo even if you look the same. Jersey warns that an application is delayed if the photos do not meet the rules.

No. Jersey says the photos must be unaltered by computer software, so skip retouching, filters and background changes. Take the picture against a plain cream or light grey wall instead of editing the background afterwards.

Not yet on the pages read. The current online step only produces an application that you print and sign, and you send printed photos with it. The gov.je pages say a new online passport application service opens on 16 November 2026 but do not describe its photo rules.

Only some applicants need a countersignatory: first adult passports, child passports, replacements for lost, stolen or damaged passports, and renewals where you no longer look like your old photo. The signer certifies one of the 2 prints as a true likeness, signs it and dates it.

No. Children under 6 need not look directly at the camera or keep a plain expression, and children under one need not have their eyes open. The child must be alone in the picture and the baby must not hold toys or use a dummy.
