Solomon Islands passport photo requirements
The 35 × 45 mm photo rules set by Solomon Islands Immigration Division for the Solomon Islands passport, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Solomon Islands passport photo?
The Solomon Islands Passport Application Form marks a photo box of 3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm), and applicants submit two copies of a recent photograph, taken full face with no hat, cap or sunglasses. A recommender certifies the photos. No official page read gives a background colour or a head size, and none gives 40 x 50 mm.
Solomon Islands passports are issued by the Immigration Division of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration. Its website says the Division is the only authority that issues travel documents, through its Passports Unit in Honiara, under the Passports Act. Applications are made in person at the Immigration Office, and the Division describes the photo, fingerprints and signature as captured electronically before the form goes for assessment.
Printed photos are still part of the paper file. The Passport Application Form on the Division's site has a photo box labelled 3.5cm X 4.5cm and says to glue the picture on, not to use staples or tape. An older form on the same site, Form A, asks for two copies of a recent photograph taken full face, and the Division's guidelines list two passport size photos certified by the recommender among the requirements for a passport.
Official material is thin. No Solomon Islands page read states a background colour, a head height, an eye position or a pixel size, and none supports 40 x 50 mm. Treat 3.5 x 4.5 cm as the only published size, follow the full-face and no-headwear wording, and ask the Passports Unit about anything else before you print.

Key requirements
- Photo box of 3.5 x 4.5 cm
The current Passport Application Form, which the Immigration Division offers for a new ordinary or emergency passport, prints "Facial Photograph: (3.5cm X 4.5cm)" and says to affix the photo with glue, not staples or tape.
- Two copies of a recent photograph
Form A says two copies of a recent photograph of the applicant must be included. The Division's guidelines also list two passport size photos among the requirements.
- Full face, no hat, cap or sunglasses
Form A says the photographs must be taken full face without hat or cap or sunglasses. Look straight at the camera with the whole face visible.
- Photographic paper, not glazed
Form A says the photographs must be printed on normal thin photographic paper and must not be glazed on the reverse side.
- A recommender certifies the photo
The recommender who completes Part 7 of Form A endorses the back of one copy with a statement that it is a true likeness of the applicant, and signs. The guidelines add that the recommender provides an official stamp showing profession and office.
- Photo, fingerprints and signature captured at the office
On the Division's page for an ordinary passport, step 3 says the application is submitted in person at the Immigration Office and that the photo, fingerprints and signature are captured electronically before assessment.
- ePassport applicants appear in person
The Division says applicants for an ePassport must appear in person before an Immigration Officer at the Passports Unit, and that applications must be made in person in the Solomon Islands.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Print two copies of one recent photo at 3.5 x 4.5 cm.
- Look straight at the camera, full face, with the whole face visible.
- Print on normal thin photographic paper and leave the back unglazed.
- Take the prints to your recommender and ask for the endorsement on the back of one copy.
- Glue the photo in the form's photo box if you are told to affix it.
- Ask the Passports Unit about background colour before you print.
Don't
- Do not wear a hat, a cap or sunglasses.
- Do not staple or tape the photo to the Passport Application Form.
- Do not use a print that is glazed on the reverse side.
- Do not use 40 x 50 mm: no Solomon Islands page read gives that size.
- Do not rely on a size or background rule from another country.
Sample photos
How a Solomon Islands passport photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 35 × 45 mm and background colour.
Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Glasses
Form A bans sunglasses and says nothing about clear glasses. No other Solomon Islands page read mentions glasses. If you wear prescription glasses, ask the Passports Unit whether they are acceptable before you print.
Headwear and religious dress
Form A says the photographs must be taken without a hat or cap. No Solomon Islands page read describes an exception for religious or cultural head coverings, so ask the Passports Unit if this affects you.
Babies and children
The Division's guidelines say a child under 16 must apply for a separate passport and that a parent or guardian submits the application. Note 4 of the older Form A still says children under 16 can be included in a parent's passport, so confirm with the Passports Unit which applies. No page read gives a special photo rule for children, so the same photo wording applies. A child 16 or over must apply for a separate passport.
Printed and digital photos
The published wording is about printed photographs on photographic paper that go in the paper file. No pixel size, file size or upload route is given. A digital photo can be cropped and resized to 3.5 x 4.5 cm and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter, then cut apart.
Where to submit the photo
Take the filled-in form, your documents, the payment receipt and the photos to the Immigration Office in Honiara. The Division says to buy the application fee at the Ministry of Finance and Treasury first, and that renewals are lodged in person at the Passport Counter.
For applicants abroad, the Solomon Islands High Commission in Wellington listed renewals on an earlier version of its website, last captured in March 2026, with two passport size photos of 3.5 cm by 4.5 cm and no remote applications. That page is no longer on its current site, so ask your mission what it wants before you print.
