Quick answer

What are the Tunisia visa photo requirements?

Tunisian visas are issued by Tunisian embassies and consulates on a paper form. The embassy in Washington asks for 1 recent photo with each tourist, business or transit visa application, and the instruction sheet with its form asks for colour photos on a white background. No photo size is published, and none of the official pages read offers an online e-visa, so the photo is a print sent with the application.

Under Law 75-40 of 14 May 1975 on passports and travel documents, a foreign passport must carry an entry visa issued by a Tunisian diplomatic or consular mission, unless a reciprocity agreement or a special convention provides otherwise. The 2024 amendment to that law also allows an electronic visa issued by the same authorities, and a chancery fee set by decree applies to visas valid for up to three months.

Many travellers need no visa at all. The instruction sheet that comes with the Washington embassy's visa form lists citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and many European countries among those who may enter without one and stay up to 90 days; citizens of countries not on its list need a visa. The sheet is older than the embassy's current fees, so confirm the list with the mission before you travel.

The application form is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' bilingual "Demande de visa" for a short stay or transit, with a box marked PHOTO at the top. It asks for your passport details, date of entry, length of stay, purpose of travel, address in Tunisia and anyone travelling with you, and ends with a pledge not to take any paid or unpaid job during the stay.

Key requirements

  • One recent photo per application

The embassy in Washington lists one recent photo for tourist, business and transit visas alike. The older instruction sheet bundled with the form asks for two pictures, so follow the current page and ask the embassy if in doubt.

  • Colour on a white background

The instruction sheet asks for colour photos with a white background. The embassy's visa page itself gives no colour.

  • No published size

Neither the visa page nor the Foreign Ministry form gives dimensions or a head size for the photo. The form only reserves a box marked PHOTO in its top corner.

  • Passport valid for six months

Send a passport valid for at least six months, with a copy of its first page and proof of your legal status in the United States, such as a permanent resident card.

  • Supporting document by visa type

Tourists add a hotel reservation or a notarised invitation letter from their host in Tunisia. Business visitors add an official invitation from the host company. Transit passengers add a cruise confirmation or an airline ticket.

  • E-visa: legal basis, no portal found

Since the 2024 amendment, the law allows an electronic visa issued by Tunisian missions. None of the official pages read on 2 November 2026 describes an online application or a photo upload.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Check first whether your nationality needs a visa
  • Send one recent colour photo on a white background
  • Complete and sign the Foreign Ministry visa form
  • Include the original passport with at least six months of validity
  • Pay by money order made out to the Embassy of Tunisia
  • Enclose a prepaid return envelope

Don't

  • Do not send cash or a personal cheque
  • Do not leave the sender's or recipient's name off the money order
  • Do not look for an online e-visa portal; no official one was found
  • Do not use an old photo

Babies and children

Neither the embassy's visa page nor the Foreign Ministry form sets a separate photo rule or document list for children. The form has a field, "Personnes devant vous accompagner", for the names of the people travelling with you.

A Tunisian visa is applied for on paper and the photo is a print. In Washington it goes in the envelope with the form and passport; the passport comes back only by USPS in the prepaid envelope you enclose. No official source read gives a digital photo route, even though the passport law now allows an electronic visa.

A digital photo can be cropped and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter.

Where to submit the photo

Apply to the Tunisian embassy or consulate responsible for where you live. In the United States that is the embassy at 1515 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC, which handles tourist, business and transit visas. It accepts payment only by money order made out to the Embassy of Tunisia, with the sender's and recipient's names filled in; an application without them is rejected.

Visitors already in Tunisia who want to stay beyond 90 days ask the police precinct nearest their place of residence, according to the embassy's instruction sheet. Longer stays for work, study or family reasons go through the Interior Ministry's visa and residence card application, filed with the police.
