Quick answer

What size is the Suriname visa photo?

Suriname's eVisa and eTourist Card take an uploaded photo of 3 x 4 cm (30 x 40 mm, 1.18 x 1.57 in), at least 472 x 709 pixels. It must be a recent colour photo with a white background, taken in the last six months, with your head from hair to chin filling 70% of the height. Many visitors need no visa photo: they pay the Entry Fee and upload only a passport copy.

Since 1 July 2022, nationals of many countries can visit Suriname without a visa for tourism or family visits of up to 90 days. They pay an Entry Fee online instead, and for that you upload only a copy of your passport. Since 1 May 2023 the waiver no longer applies to 21 countries: the Dominican Republic, India, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Angola, Ghana, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, South Africa, Eritrea, Somalia, Egypt, Tunisia, Cuba and Syria. Travellers coming for an internship, business or a work-related visit still need a visa.

Visa applications run through the Suriname portal of VFS Global, which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs names as its online channel. Tourists from Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela can use the eTourist Card; they and the 18 other listed nationalities can apply for the eTourist Visa. Business, transit and short-stay (MKV) visas are on the same portal.

The eTourist Card, eTourist Visa and business eVisa pages all ask for the same photo: a recent passport-size colour photograph, 3 x 4 cm, on a white background. That is smaller than the common 35 x 45 mm format.

Key requirements

  • 3 x 4 cm, not 35 x 45 mm

The portal says the photograph to be uploaded must be 3 x 4 cm in size. Crop to that shape rather than the 35 x 45 mm used by many other countries.

  • Enough pixels

The photo must be at least 472 x 709 pixels. VFS writes this as height x width, which does not match a portrait 3 x 4 cm photo, so give yourself room above both numbers.

  • Head fills 70% of the height

Measured from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, the head should be 70% of the photo's height. The whole head must be in the frame.

  • Light, uncluttered background

Use a plain white or off-white background, with no furniture or other objects behind you. The document lists ask for a white background specifically.

  • No shadows

Sit so that your face is fully lit, with no distracting shadows on the face or on the background.

  • Centred, eyes open

Face the camera directly with your eyes open. Face and shoulders should be centred, and long hair must not cover your eyes.

  • Recent colour photo

The photograph must be in colour and taken within the last six months. A photo that misses the criteria delays the application until you send a new one.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Crop the photo to 3 x 4 cm proportions.
  • Keep the file above 472 x 709 pixels.
  • Use a plain white or off-white background.
  • Light your face fully, without shadows.
  • Look straight into the camera with your eyes open.

Don't

  • Do not use a 35 x 45 mm crop without resizing it.
  • Do not wear a hat unless for religious reasons.
  • Do not let flash reflect in your glasses.
  • Do not leave furniture or clutter in the background.
  • Do not use a photo older than six months.

Sample photos

How a Suriname visa photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 30 × 40 mm and background colour.

Correct
Open-mouth smile
Head tilted
Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

Glasses are allowed. The VFS photo guide only asks that, if you wear spectacles, the flash does not reflect on your eyes.

Your eyes must be open and clearly visible, and long hair must not cover them. If you cannot avoid a reflection in the lenses, take the glasses off for the photo.

Headwear and religious dress

Headgear and hats are not acceptable, except when worn for religious reasons. Even then, the covering must not prevent a perfect view of your face.

The whole head should still show in the frame, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, so that the head measures 70% of the photo height.

Babies and children

The published photo rules make no exception for children. For a child up to 17, the portal asks for extra documents: an authenticated authorisation from the parent or parents and a legalised copy of the family book or birth certificate, when the child travels alone or with only one parent. A copy of the court decision is needed for an adopted child or one under legal guardianship.

Children aged 0 to 2 are exempt from the Entry Fee, according to the portal's Entry Fee page.

The eVisa and eTourist Card are online, so the photo is a file you upload; no print is needed. The approved eVisa or Entry Fee voucher is the document you print and show to immigration on arrival, with the passport you applied with.

No file format or file size is published on the portal's photo page. Because the pixel minimum is labelled height x width, a portrait 3 x 4 cm photo that is at least 709 pixels wide, such as 709 x 945 pixels (3 x 4 cm at 600 dpi), clears it whichever way it is read. A digital photo can be cropped and resized to those dimensions.

Where to submit the photo

Apply on the VFS Global Suriname portal, the online channel the Ministry of Foreign Affairs names for visas and the Entry Fee. Choose the eTourist Card, eTourist Visa, business or transit eVisa, or the short-stay (MKV) categories, upload the documents and pay online by card.

For internships and work-related stays longer than three months, the ministry says you can also apply at a Surinamese representation abroad. No separate photo rules for such consulate applications were found on official pages.

No. The Entry Fee application asks you to upload a copy of your passport only. A photo is needed when you apply for a visa: the eTourist Card, eTourist Visa or business eVisa.

Nationals of the 21 countries excluded from the visa waiver since 1 May 2023, including India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Cuba and Venezuela. Anyone travelling for an internship, business or work-related visit also needs a visa.

The portal says the photograph to be uploaded must be 3 x 4 cm and warns that photos not meeting the criteria delay the application. Crop a 35 x 45 mm picture to the 3 x 4 cm shape before uploading.

Yes. Make sure the flash does not reflect on your eyes, and keep your eyes open and uncovered by hair.

Only for religious reasons. Headgear and hats are otherwise not acceptable, and a religious covering must still leave a perfect view of your face.

White. The document lists ask for a colour photograph with a white background. The photo guide allows any light colour but says plain white or off-white gives the best result, with nothing behind you.
