At a glance

Egyptian passports need recent colour photos of 4 x 6 cm (40 x 60 mm) on a white background, three for an application in Egypt; the Washington embassy asks for 2 x 2 inches instead. Egypt visas have no national photo size: US consulates ask for 2 x 2 inches, London for 35 x 45 mm, and the official e-Visa portal publishes no photo rules.

Overview

Two Ministry of Interior bodies handle the documents covered here. The Passports, Emigration and Nationality Administration issues passports to citizens and ordinary visas to foreigners, through its offices in Egypt, the e-Visa portal and Egyptian consulates abroad. The national ID card comes from the civil status authority, which keeps the holder's photo on record: the Washington embassy renews cards with the photo already held there, and London checks the photos it receives against that database.

Photos reach the authorities in different ways. Passport applicants hand in printed 4 x 6 cm photos with form No. 29, while consulates set their own photo counts and sometimes their own size. Visa photos are a consular matter: prints for a paper application, nothing published for the e-Visa, and none listed for a visa on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily. Egyptian citizens use 4 x 6 cm passport photos in Egypt, while the visa photo depends on the consulate: 2 x 2 inches in the United States and 35 x 45 mm in London. Through the Washington embassy both documents use 2 x 2 inch photos on a white background.

It depends on the mission. The Washington embassy renews national ID cards only for existing holders, in person, and the new card carries the photo already in the civil status records; it says first cards must be issued in Egypt. The London consulate takes photos with the application and checks them against that database.

Only visa2egypt.gov.eg, the Ministry of Interior's portal, which covers tourist visas for the nationalities it lists. The Egyptian embassy in Washington calls it the only official link. Business and other visas go through a consulate.

At the Egyptian embassy or consulate covering their place of residence. The passports administration states that citizens outside the country apply to Egyptian consulates abroad. Each mission publishes its own list, including how many photos to bring and, in Washington, a 2 x 2 inch size.
