At a glance

For a Sudanese passport you bring no photo: the passport office or embassy takes it with your fingerprints. For a national number abroad, the Washington and London embassies ask for 2 photographs with no published size, while centres in Sudan photograph you. Visa photos depend on the embassy: Berlin asks for 35 x 45 mm, Tokyo for 3 cm x 2.5 cm, and Washington and London for one passport-size print.

Overview

Sudanese passports come from the General Directorate of Passports and Immigration, and national numbers and ID cards from the General Directorate of Civil Registry, both under the Ministry of Interior. Visas are issued by Sudanese embassies once the Ministry of Interior has given the sponsor an entry permit or, for official travellers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the trip. Photo handling differs: passports use a photo captured at the counter, national number registration abroad takes prints, and visa photo rules are set embassy by embassy. Since the 2023 conflict, passport services have moved between cities and to missions abroad, so check the office's current notice before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Visa applications at Sudanese embassies, national number registration at the Washington and London embassies, and the emergency travel document all take prints. The ordinary e-passport does not: the photo is taken during the appointment.

At the missions in the passport booking system, which on 2 November 2026 listed 21 offices abroad, including London, Washington, Cairo, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai, Doha and Juba. Some other embassies rely on visiting teams from the Ministry of Interior.

No official national size was found. Passport photos are captured on site, the embassies that register national numbers give no dimensions, and visa sizes differ: 35 x 45 mm in Berlin, 3 cm x 2.5 cm in Tokyo, passport-size elsewhere.

Yes. The Directorate's booking system asks adults for a printed copy of the national number document, so anyone without one registers with the civil registry or an embassy first.
