Quick answer

What are the Lesotho eVisa photo requirements?

The Ministry of Home Affairs publishes no photo size, pixel, file-size or format rules for a Lesotho e-visa. Its e-visa page currently reads "eVISA Applications System Suspended" and gives VISA-Applications.Immigration@gov.ls for online applications. The 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) square has no official basis in the pages read, and the old evisalesotho website that was linked for upload rules no longer loads. Beware of look-alike e-visa sites.

Visas for Lesotho are handled by the Ministry of Home Affairs, whose own website is homeaffairs.gov.ls, through its Immigration Services department. The ministry's "Do I need a visa?" page says every citizen of a foreign country who wishes to visit the Kingdom of Lesotho on any visa category must first obtain a visa through the Lesotho e-visa system. Citizens of countries with visa abolition agreements, and of some Commonwealth countries, are exempt.

The e-visa system is not open at the moment. The ministry's e-visa page and its eServices page both read "eVISA Applications System Suspended" and give VISA-Applications.Immigration@gov.ls as the address "for online applications". Neither page carries a date, and the link behind the E-VISA menu item points to a page address that now returns an error.

No official photo rules are published. The ministry's revised list of entry visa requirements, posted in September 2021, covers eleven visa categories from business and tourist visas to marriage visas, and does not mention a photograph in any of them. A 2 x 2 inch photo size has been attributed to a photo-guidelines page on a former e-visa website named evisalesotho, which called itself the official visa website of the Kingdom of Lesotho in 2022. That site no longer loads, and no ministry page repeats the size.

Key requirements

  • The e-visa system is suspended

The ministry's e-visa page says "eVISA Applications System Suspended" and tells applicants to email VISA-Applications.Immigration@gov.ls for online applications. The same notice appears on its eServices page, without a date.

  • You still need a visa first

The ministry says every foreign citizen visiting on any visa category must first obtain a visa through the e-visa system, unless their country has a visa abolition agreement with Lesotho or they are citizens of some Commonwealth countries.

  • No photo specification is published

The ministry's e-visa pages and its September 2021 entry visa requirements list give no photo size, pixel size, file size, file format or background colour for any of the eleven visa categories.

  • No official 2 x 2 inch rule

No ministry page read for this guide asks for a 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) photo. Treat that size as an unconfirmed figure and ask the Immigration Department which photo to send.

  • The old evisalesotho website is gone

The evisalesotho address that once hosted the e-visa application no longer loads. Do not enter personal or payment details on any other website that claims to run the Lesotho e-visa unless the ministry links to it.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Start from the ministry's own website, homeaffairs.gov.ls, to find the current application route.
  • Email VISA-Applications.Immigration@gov.ls to ask how to apply and which photo to send.
  • Read the ministry's revised entry visa requirements for your visa category.
  • Keep a clear photo with a plain background ready so you can resize it to whatever is asked.

Don't

  • Do not treat 2 x 2 inches as an official rule: the ministry does not state it.
  • Do not assume a pixel size or file size: none is published.
  • Do not use a look-alike website that was not linked from the ministry's own pages.
  • Do not travel on the assumption that an e-visa can still be applied for online.

Babies and children

No page read for this guide gives a separate photo rule for a child's visa, and the ministry's entry visa requirements list names no photograph for any category. Ask the Immigration Department by email which photo to send for a child, and say how old the child is.

The ministry does not say whether a photo is uploaded, attached to an email or printed, because its e-visa system is suspended and its requirements list names no photo. Ask the Immigration Department which it wants when you write to it.

A digital photo can be cropped and resized to the pixel size an office asks for, or printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter if prints are requested.

Where to submit the photo

The ministry's e-visa page directs online applications to the email address VISA-Applications.Immigration@gov.ls. The Ministry of Home Affairs is at the corner of Moshoeshoe and Lerotholi Roads in Maseru, and lists info.homeaffairs@gov.ls as a general contact address.

The ministry's website also carries separate eServices entries for permits and for a passport status checker, so make sure you are using the E-VISA entry. Check the page again before you apply, because the suspension notice may change.

How to get your Lesotho eVisa photo

  1. Check the official requirements. Read the official specification for the Lesotho eVisa. Check the rules on pose, expression, glasses and headwear below.
  2. Take the photo. Follow the key requirements: the e-visa system is suspended; you still need a visa first; no photo specification is published; no official 2 x 2 inch rule.
  3. Prepare a print or digital file. The ministry does not say whether a photo is uploaded, attached to an email or printed, because its e-visa system is suspended and its requirements list names no photo. Ask the Immigration Department which it wants when you write to it.
  4. Submit the photo with your application. The ministry's e-visa page directs online applications to the email address VISA-Applications.Immigration@gov.ls.

Most foreign citizens do. The ministry says every foreign citizen must first obtain a visa through the Lesotho e-visa system, except citizens of countries with visa abolition agreements and of some Commonwealth countries.
