Quick answer

What size is the Mongolia visa photo?

A Mongolian visa application needs one photo of 3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm, 1.38 x 1.77 in), taken within the last six months. The consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls this size mandatory, and all three Immigration Agency visa forms carry a photo box of that size. Embassies accept printed documents only. The e-visa is applied for online at evisa.mn.

Visas for Mongolia are issued by the Immigration Agency of Mongolia and by Mongolia's embassies and consulates. Nationals of countries that have a visa-exemption agreement with Mongolia need no visa for the period the agreement allows. Everyone else has three routes: an application at a Mongolian embassy or consulate, an e-visa through evisa.mn for tourism (K2), cultural, arts and sports events or film and content production (K4) and transit of up to 10 days (K6), or a visa issued on arrival at the airport in Ulaanbaatar or a border point.

The paper routes use the Immigration Agency's application forms: Form 1 for a temporary visit without a visa approval, Form 2 for a visit with a visa approval, and Form 3 for a family member or related party. Each form has a photo box marked 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm, to be filled with a photo taken within the last six months. The consular department's list of requirements names a 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo for tourist, business, employment, student and official or diplomatic visas, and adds that the size is mandatory.

Longer stays begin in Mongolia itself. The person or organisation inviting you applies to the Immigration Agency for a visa permission, and you can apply for the visa only once that permission has been issued and passed to the embassy. The saved embassy form with a 3 x 4 photo box, uploaded in 2013, has been replaced: the embassy in Washington now links to the current forms with the 3.5 x 4.5 cm box.

In the official words

Key requirements

  • The size is mandatory

The consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists a 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo for tourist visas, for business, employment and student visas, and for official and diplomatic visas, each time adding in brackets that the size of the photo is mandatory.

  • One photo with the form

The embassy in Washington asks for the visa application form with one passport-size photo. Forms 1, 2 and 3 each have a single box marked 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm.

  • Six months at most

The photo box on every current form says the picture must have been taken within the last six months.

  • Hard copies only at embassies

The consular department states that all documents must be printed hard copies and that the embassy will not accept soft copies. Bring or post a physical photo together with the signed form.

  • E-visa applications stay online

E-visa applicants do not visit an embassy or hand over their passport. The form at evisa.mn asks for an image of the first page of your passport, Immigration Agency officers review the application, and the approved electronic travel authorisation is sent to your email address.

  • Border visas use Form 1

Form 1 tells applicants who will collect their visa at the border to skip the questions on express service and entry date. The consular department advises completing the form before arrival to avoid longer processing.

  • Biometrics on entry

The consular department notes that foreign nationals must give their biometric details at border control when they enter Mongolia.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Check the visa-exemption list before you apply
  • Download the current Immigration Agency form that fits your trip
  • Attach one 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo taken within the last six months
  • Write your answers clearly in Mongolian or English
  • Bring printed copies of every document to the embassy
  • Fill in Form 1 before you travel if you will get a visa on arrival
  • Keep a printed or digital copy of your e-visa for the airline and the border

Don't

  • Do not use the old embassy form with a 3 x 4 photo box
  • Do not send soft copies to an embassy
  • Do not apply for a long-stay visa before your host's visa permission is issued
  • Do not pay anyone an extra fee for an express e-visa; the government charges none
  • Do not use a photo older than six months

Babies and children

No separate photo rule for children is published, and the photo box on the forms is the same for every applicant. For visa permissions, the Immigration Agency asks the inviting party for the identity card of the guardian when the foreign national is under 16. The e-visa form reminds applicants that guardians must be over 18 years old.

Embassy and consulate applications are paper ones: a 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo goes with the printed form, and the consular department refuses soft copies. The same form, and its photo box, is used for visas collected on arrival.

The e-visa is entirely online. Its form asks for an image of your passport's first page, and its supporting-document fields accept JPG and PNG files. The Immigration Agency's public e-visa pages publish no portrait size, pixel count or file size, so follow the instructions inside the form. The e-visa arrives by email, and the embassy in Washington advises carrying a printed or digital copy to show the airline and the border officers.

Where to submit the photo

At a Mongolian embassy or consulate: the embassy in Washington takes applications in person or by mail, with a prepaid self-addressed return envelope. Online: evisa.mn, run by the Immigration Agency of Mongolia, for nationals of the countries on its list. On arrival: the airport in Ulaanbaatar or a Mongolian border point, for tourists from listed countries, or for other visitors once the host has obtained an on-arrival visa approval.

How to get your Mongolia visa photo

3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm, 1.38 x 1.77 in). The consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the size is mandatory, and the Immigration Agency's Forms 1, 2 and 3 all have a 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm photo box.

The current forms and the consular department name 3.5 x 4.5 cm and call the size mandatory. An old embassy form uploaded in 2013 had a 3 x 4 box, but the embassy in Washington now links to the new forms, which are the same as those of the Immigration Agency.

The e-visa form asks for an image of the first page of your passport. The Immigration Agency's public pages and its e-visa announcement give no rules for a separate portrait, so follow the instructions shown in the online form as you fill it in.

Taken within the last six months. The wording is printed next to the photo box on all three current visa application forms.

No. The consular department states that all documents must be hard copies and that the embassy will not accept soft copies. Washington takes applications in person or by mail.

Border visas use Form 1, which has the same 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo box. The consular department advises completing the form before you arrive to avoid longer processing, so have a photo ready for it.

Not if your country has a visa-exemption agreement with Mongolia and your stay is within the period it allows. Check the exemption list published by the consular department and the Immigration Agency before you apply.
