Quick answer

What size is the Mongolia residence permit photo?

Foreigners living in Mongolia apply to the Immigration Agency of Mongolia for a residence permit, usually within 21 days of entry. The document lists ask for colour photos of 3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm, 1.38 x 1.77 in) taken within the last six months, from one to three prints depending on the permit. On a first application you also come in person to have your fingerprints and photo recorded.

Residence permits for foreign nationals are issued by the Immigration Agency of Mongolia. They cover residence for official and private purposes, in categories that include employment (C), study (E), family (F), immigrant (G), private purpose (H), investor (B), official, diplomatic and religious stays. A short-term visitor who came on a visa permission must apply at the agency within 21 days of entering the country, and a permit is needed if the intended stay is more than 180 days in a year. Study permits of type E1, for example, are granted for up to one year.

Photos reach your file in two ways. The agency's Mongolian-language document lists ask for a portrait photo in colour, 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm in size and taken within the last six months, and the English pages give the number of prints for some categories: two for a family permit (F1), three for an immigrant permit (G) and one for an immigrant's child. In addition, a foreign national applying for a residence permit for the first time must come to the agency in person and register biometric data, which the agency lists as fingerprints and photos.

Applications are made in person by the foreign national or a representative, and the original documents are handed over in hard copy. Once you are told that the permit has been approved and printed, you collect the residence card at the agency, bringing your original passport. The agency's pages for extending an existing permit list no photo.

Key requirements

  • 3.5 x 4.5 cm, in colour

The Mongolian-language requirement pages for employment, study, family and immigrant permits all list a portrait photo that is 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm and in colour. The English pages write the size as 3.5x4.5.

  • Recent photos only

The same Mongolian lists require the photo to have been taken within the last six months.

  • Fingerprints and photo on a first application

A foreign national applying for a residence permit for the first time must come to the Immigration Agency in person and register biometric data, namely fingerprints and photos. The application itself may be lodged by a representative, but this registration needs the applicant in person.

  • Count the prints for your category

The F1 family permit asks for two photos, the G immigrant permit for three, and a residence permit for an immigrant's child for one. Other category pages list the photo without a number, so ask the agency how many to bring.

  • Apply within 21 days of entry

Short-term visitors must apply for the residence permit at the Immigration Agency within 21 days after entry. A permit is also needed when the intended stay is more than 180 days in one year.

  • Originals in person

The agency asks for the hard, original copies of the documents to be brought in person. Applications for a permit, a change of category or a cancellation are made in person by the foreign national or a representative.

  • Passport to collect the card

When the agency tells you that the permit has been approved and the card printed, bring your original passport to collect the residence card.

Do's and don'ts

  • Do not use black-and-white photos
  • Do not miss the 21-day deadline after entry
  • Do not skip the in-person biometric registration on a first application
  • Do not send copies where the agency asks for originals

Babies and children

An immigrant's child has a separate list: a request, proof of residence from the khoroo governor showing the address and family members, the passport with a copy, one 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo, the birth certificate with an official translation, the parents' residence permits with copies, the payment receipt and the application form, which is filled in online. For a child under 18 of an immigrant visa holder, the permit runs for the same period as the parents' or guardians' permit.

Family permits (F1) for children and spouses of Mongolian citizens ask for the marriage, birth or adoption certificate with an official translation, alongside two photos.

Residence permits are handled on paper. The photos are prints handed in with the original documents, and the agency publishes no upload size or file format for them. Separately, the agency records your photo and fingerprints itself on a first application, so the prints are not the only image on file.

Some steps are online: the immigrant's child list marks its application form "apply online". The printed photos still go to the agency with the hard-copy documents.

Where to submit the photo

At the Immigration Agency of Mongolia, in person, by the foreign national or a representative. A first-time applicant must attend personally to register fingerprints and photos. When the permit is ready, collect the residence card there with your original passport.
