Thai passports need no photo: the passport office or embassy takes it. Printed visa photos are 35 x 45 mm, or 2 x 2 in at some missions, and 4 x 6 cm for Visa on Arrival. The e-Visa takes a JPG or JPEG under 3 MB taken within six months. The APEC Business Travel Card takes an uploaded photo file with no published size.

Overview

You bring no photo for a Thai passport, because the passport office or embassy captures your face, fingerprints and iris at the appointment; Thai visa photos are 35 x 45 mm in colour on plain white, or 4 x 6 cm for Visa on Arrival, and the e-Visa takes a JPG or JPEG under 3 MB taken within the last six months.

Four Thai documents handle the photo in different ways. The Department of Consular Affairs issues e-passports to Thai citizens and captures the face, fingerprints and iris at the appointment, in Thailand or at an embassy, so no print is used. Visas for foreigners come from Thai embassies and consulates: since 1 January 2025 almost all are applied for through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' e-Visa website, where the photo is a JPG or JPEG upload, while Visa on Arrival at the border still uses a 4 x 6 cm print. The APEC Business Travel Card for Thai business travellers is applied for online through the JSCCIB, the private-sector committee the department names, with an uploaded photo file.

Many visitors need no photo at all. If your nationality can enter Thailand without a visa, you only fill in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, which asks for passport, travel and accommodation details but no portrait.

Frequently asked questions

Only if you need a visa. Visa-exempt visitors complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before travel, free of charge; it asks for passport, flight and accommodation details and no portrait photo. Visa applicants upload a photo to the e-Visa, and Visa on Arrival needs a 4 x 6 cm print.

Visa on Arrival. The application form at the designated immigration checkpoint takes one 4 x 6 cm photo taken within the last 6 months. Embassy visas use 35 x 45 mm or 2 x 2 in instead.

Mostly the same picture, in a different form. Embassy visas are now applied for online, so the photo is uploaded as a JPG or JPEG under 3 MB. Missions still describe it by print size, usually 35 x 45 mm or 2 x 2 in.

No. The Department of Consular Affairs and Thai embassies photograph every applicant at the appointment and also record fingerprints and an iris image. Bring your Thai ID card and old passport instead, and wear only clear contact lenses.

Better not. The ICAO list on the Nairobi embassy's visa page asks for photos printed professionally or taken in a passport photo booth, so have any print made at a photo lab, including the 4 x 6 cm photo for Visa on Arrival. Most embassy visas now go through the e-Visa website, where you upload the file and print nothing.
