At a glance

Hungary's two main photo documents work differently. For a passport (útlevél), anyone 12 or older is photographed at the government window or consulate, and only children under 12 need a print, 35-40 mm wide or 35 x 45 mm where a consulate says so. Visa and residence permit applicants bring a colour print of the same width, face 70-80%, on a light background, and upload one to Enter Hungary when applying in the country.

Overview

Hungarian passports are requested at government windows (kormányablak) and district offices in Hungary or at embassies and consulates abroad, and produced centrally. Officials record the applicant's facial image, signature and fingerprints during the visit, so a paper photo is needed mainly when a child under 12, or an applicant too ill to attend, is not present.

Visas for foreign nationals follow two tracks. Hungarian missions handle short Schengen stays, while the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF) decides residence permits and the D visas linked to them. Both tracks capture biometrics in person and still ask for a printed or uploaded photo taken within the last six months.

Frequently asked questions

Both follow Hungarian guidance of a photo 35-40 mm wide with the face filling 70-80% of it. The difference is who supplies it: passport images are captured at the office, while visa applicants bring their own prints.

At the government window, district office or consulate where you apply, as part of the appointment. Children under 12 do not attend, so their parents hand in a printed photo instead.

The National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF). Consulates abroad receive applications and issue the D visa once a permit is approved; people already in Hungary on a visa-free stay can apply through Enter Hungary.
