At a glance

Icelandic citizens hold the Icelandic passport, issued by Registers Iceland and applied for at a district commissioner (sýslumaður) in Iceland or at an embassy abroad. You do not bring a photo: the office takes a digital photo at your photo appointment. The regulation requires a light grey background but publishes no size for that photo. Only an emergency passport needs two printed photos, 35 x 45 mm.

Overview

Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá Íslands) issues the Icelandic passport. The district commissioners (sýslumenn) receive applications inside Iceland, and certain Icelandic embassies receive them abroad. In both cases you attend in person and the photo is taken as part of the visit.

Because the office takes the photo, there is no print size to match for a regular passport. A photography studio can email its own photo to the office you will visit, but the office still takes a comparison photo and will not accept a file from you. The passport page explains the background, glasses and headwear rules and the emergency passport prints.

Frequently asked questions

None from you. A digital photo is taken at the district commissioner's office at your photo appointment, with a light grey, neutral, evenly lit background. A studio may email a photo to the office, but you cannot send your own.

No size is published for the digital photo. The only size in the passport regulation is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in), for the two printed photos of an emergency passport.

Registers Iceland issues it. District commissioners in Iceland and certain embassies abroad take the applications and the photo.
