Madagascar visa photo requirements
The 35 × 45 mm photo rules set by Botschaft der Republik Madagaskar, Berlin for the Madagascar visa, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Madagascar visa photo?
Madagascar has no single visa photo standard. For an embassy visa, Berlin and Brussels ask for recent identity photos of 3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm), London for one 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) print, and Paris for one recent photo glued on the form without a size. No mission publishes a background colour. The official tourist eVisa lists a passport, a payment card, email and phone, and names no photo.
Madagascar issues two families of visas. Non-immigrant visas cover stays of under 90 days for tourism, business, missions, cruises and similar visits. Immigrant visas cover longer stays and begin as a one-month "transformable" visa that is converted into a long-stay visa after arrival. Short-stay visas are issued either by Malagasy embassies and consulates or by the police immigration post at the airport or port where you land. The transformable visa is never issued on arrival.
Tourists therefore have three routes: the official eVisa platform, the counter on arrival, or an embassy before travel. Only the embassy route has published photo rules, and each mission sets its own. The photo is a print that goes on or with a paper form, and its size depends on where you apply: 3.5 x 4.5 cm in Berlin and Brussels, 2 x 2 inches in London.
The Paris embassy asks for a recent photo without a size, and the Washington embassy's current visa page lists no photo specification at all. Read the checklist of the mission that covers your country of residence before you print.

Key requirements
- The size depends on the embassy
Berlin's and Brussels' checklists give the format as 3.5 x 4.5 cm, a 35 x 45 mm portrait print. London asks for 2 x 2 inches, and its application form marks the photo box as 51 x 51 mm. Paris asks for a recent identity photo and gives no dimensions.
- One print, or two in Brussels
Berlin, Paris and London each list one recent photo per application. Brussels asks for two recent identity photos for a short-stay tourist visa, so take two identical prints there.
- The photo goes on the form
The Paris checklists say the photo is glued on the application form, and the Berlin, Paris and London forms all have a box for it. Have the print ready before you sign and post the form.
- No background or pose rule is published
None of the mission lists read for this page gives a background colour, head size, expression, glasses or headwear rule. If your print could be borderline, ask the mission handling your file before you send it.
- The eVisa lists no photo
The official tourist eVisa platform says to have a valid passport, a payment card and access to your email and phone before you start. A photo is not on that list. The travel authorisation is issued within 72 hours and is shown to the police on arrival, printed or on a smartphone.
- Short tourist visas on arrival
Tourist visas are also issued at Madagascar's international airports and ports. Berlin gives the limit as stays under 60 days for tourist, cruise and sailing visas; London says under 30 days. The eVisa platform adds that you can apply at its counters on arrival.
- Long stays start at a mission
The one-month transformable visa for a stay of over 90 days cannot be issued at an airport or port. Berlin's and Paris's long-stay checklists ask for the same single recent photo as their short-stay lists.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Read the photo line on your own embassy's checklist.
- Print 35 x 45 mm photos for Berlin or Brussels.
- Print 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) photos for London.
- Take two identical prints to Brussels.
- Glue the photo into the photo box on the form.
- Apply for the eVisa only through evisamada.gov.mg.
Don't
- Do not assume one size suits every Malagasy embassy.
- Do not send an incomplete file; Berlin and Paris will not process it.
- Do not pay look-alike eVisa sites that add their own fees.
- Do not expect a transformable long-stay visa at the airport.
- Do not put cash for the fee inside a postal application to Berlin.

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Babies and children
Minors apply on the same forms as adults, and the forms have a field for the parental authority or legal guardian. Paris adds that for minors the form is signed by the parents or the legal guardian. No mission publishes a different photo size or a photo exception for babies or young children.
Paris requires a parental authorisation for children who travel alone or with only one parent, from both parents or from one of them as the case requires. Brussels asks for an authorisation signed by both parents, legalised at the commune, when a minor travels with only one parent.
Printed and digital photos
Embassy visas are paper applications. Berlin has you download the PDF form, fill it in on screen, print it, sign it and post it with your documents and proof of payment. London wants the file emailed for checking first, then the signed hardcopy and passport sent or dropped off. In each case the photo is a physical print attached to the form.
The tourist eVisa is fully online: you register, pay by card and download the travel authorisation. Its published start list does not include a photo, and no pixel size or file format is published. If you take your embassy photo with a phone, it can be cropped to 35 x 45 mm or 2 x 2 inches and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter.
Where to submit the photo
Berlin handles residents of Germany and of Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania and Iceland, by post to its visa service in Falkensee. Brussels receives files on appointment only, on weekday mornings, or by post at least 10 days before departure. Paris takes the complete physical file at its visa service, or by post at least 10 days ahead with a Chronopost return envelope.
London covers the United Kingdom, Ireland, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Washington accepts tourist applications at the embassy or by mail with a prepaid return envelope, and notes that US residents may instead apply on arrival. The foreign ministry also names evisa.diplomatie.gov.mg for long-stay and special visas where there is no Malagasy mission; on 2 November 2026 that address showed the Brussels embassy's website instead.

Madagascar visa photo FAQ
It depends on the embassy. Berlin and Brussels ask for 3.5 x 4.5 cm, which is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in). London asks for 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). Paris asks for a recent photo without a size, and Washington's current page gives none.
The official platform does not list one. Its "before you start" list names a valid passport, a payment card and access to your email and phone. The eVisa covers tourist visits only, is single entry and allows up to 60 days.
The platform calls evisamada.gov.mg the only official website for online visa applications. That government address forwards to evisamada-mg.com, which carries the Republic and national police logos. The platform warns that scam sites may overcharge.
Yes, for short tourist stays: tourist, cruise and sailing visas are issued at international airports and ports, under 60 days according to Berlin and under 30 days according to London. The official pages do not say whether a photo is needed at the counter. Long-stay transformable visas are never issued on arrival.
No Malagasy mission read for this page states a background colour. Berlin, Brussels, Paris and London describe only the number of photos and, in three cases, the size. Ask your embassy if you are unsure about the background.
One in Berlin, Paris and London; two in Brussels for a short-stay tourist visa. Paris has the photo glued on the application form, and the forms in Berlin and London also have a photo box.
No official source read for this page asks for 5 x 5 cm. The published sizes are 3.5 x 4.5 cm in Berlin and Brussels and 2 x 2 inches in London. Use the size on your own embassy's checklist.
The Washington embassy's current visa page lists the application form, a letter of commitment and an entry card but no photo size. Ask the embassy before printing. As a tourist you can also apply on arrival or use the eVisa, which lists no photo.
