At a glance

Croatia's passport (putovnica), identity card (osobna iskaznica), driving licence (vozačka dozvola) and visas all take a 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in) printed photo with a light plain background. Foreigners' biometric residence permits, issued by MUP in Croatia, take 30 x 35 mm. For the passport, ID card and licence, MUP can reuse a photo you supplied in the last five years instead of a new print.

Overview

Two ministries issue Croatia's main documents. The Ministry of the Interior (MUP) issues passports, identity cards and driving licences through police administrations and police stations, and handles temporary stay and residence permits for foreigners. The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MVEP) runs the embassies and consulates, which take passport applications from Croatians abroad and visa applications from foreigners, in many countries through VFS Global centres.

MUP's three documents for citizens share one set of photo rules: 35 x 45 mm, head about two-thirds of the height and no more than 36 mm, a light plain background and glossy paper. No photo is uploaded; you bring a print, or none if MUP already has a photo from the last five years. The e-Građani portal goes further and reuses your identity card photo for online passport and driving licence applications. Visa photos follow MVEP's Ordinance on Visas and are scanned or taken when you apply.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Both take one 35 x 45 mm photo, and the two ordinances set the same head size, background and paper rules. The ID card checklist adds that the photo must be in colour.

Often. MUP does not ask for a new print for a passport, ID card or driving licence when it holds a photo you supplied for one of these in the last five years and you look much the same. Online passport and licence applications use the photo from your electronic ID card.

Not for passports or driving licences. MUP says the regulations rule out photos made in self-service booths and retouched photos, and the driving licence ordinance says the same in its photo article.

30 x 35 mm, smaller than the 35 x 45 mm photo used for Croatian visas. MUP asks for it with the biometric residence permit application, which is made in person at the police administration or station for your address.
