At a glance

Cyprus passports and identity cards are photographed by the Civil Registry and Migration Department at a service point, and by consular officers abroad, so most people bring nothing. No official page gives a print size for either document. A visa application needs a recent printed photo affixed to the form, 35 to 40 mm wide under the EU guidance, so 35 x 45 mm fits.

Overview

The Civil Registry and Migration Department (CRMD) of the Ministry of Interior issues Cypriot passports and identity cards. You apply online on gov.cy or at a service point and then attend in person for the photo, fingerprints and signature. Abroad, embassies and high commissions with a biometric station do the same. The CRMD has a specification for biometric photographs if you supply your own print, but it gives proportions and print quality rather than a paper size.

Visas are different. They are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its missions, and the applicant supplies a printed photo for the form. Cyprus is in the European Union but not yet in Schengen, so a Cyprus visa is valid only for Cyprus. Each mission adds details, for example a face of at least 34 mm in New Delhi. Emergency travel documents, issued by missions when a passport is lost, take prints of 4 x 5 cm in Berlin and 3 x 4 cm in London.

Frequently asked questions

No official page gives one. The CRMD photographs you at the service point, and consular officers do it abroad. The CRMD specification describes the face, 32 to 36 mm high, rather than a paper size.

No. After applying online or at a service point, the CRMD takes the photo and fingerprints. You may supply your own print only if it meets the CRMD biometric photograph specification.

A recent printed passport-sized photograph affixed to the application form. The EU guidance the Ministry links asks for 35 to 40 mm in width and six months at most, so a 35 x 45 mm photo fits.

Not yet. It is an EU member, but visas issued by Cyprus are valid only for Cyprus until it is fully integrated into Schengen, according to the Ministry.

It depends on the mission: two 4 x 5 cm photos in Berlin and two 3 x 4 cm photos in London. These sizes do not apply to the passport or the identity card.
