At a glance

The Maltese passport is Malta's document on this site. The Passport Office of Identità issues it and photographs applicants aged 6 and over during the visit, at home or at a Maltese mission. Printed photos, 35 x 45 mm on white, are mainly for children under 14 and for citizens abroad who hold no Maltese ID card.

Overview

Identità is Malta's agency for identity documents. Its Passport Office issues Maltese passports from offices in Marsa and in Victoria, Gozo, and its Identity Cards Unit issues the national ID card that residents must hold before they can apply for a passport. Maltese citizens abroad apply through the embassies, high commissions and consulates of the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, which record biometrics and pass the application to Malta.

Because the passport photo is normally captured on the spot, paper photos matter mostly for families and for citizens born or living abroad. Any print has to be endorsed by a recommender: a graduate who lives in Malta and has known the applicant for at least two years.
