At a glance

Greece has one document page here, the passport. Passport offices in Greece take the photo as a digital file, 1280 x 1600 pixels, uploaded by a professional photographer to the gov.gr myPhoto service. Applicants abroad may also upload their own photo to the consular platform or bring a 40 x 60 mm print on photographic paper. The photo must be in colour and taken within the last six months.

Overview

Greece uses one passport photo standard in two formats, both in colour on a plain light background with grey preferred: a 1280 x 1600 pixel JPEG of up to 3 MB that a professional photographer uploads to myPhoto for applications in Greece, and a 40 x 60 mm print on photographic paper for applications abroad.

Greek passports are issued under the Hellenic Police procedure by the National Passport and Secure Documents Center. You lodge the application in person at the passport office for your address in Greece, or at a Greek consular authority abroad, and the photo is one of the supporting documents. The passport page gives the 40 x 60 mm print size and the 1280 x 1600 pixel file.

The two formats follow different rules. Inside Greece the photo goes through myPhoto and is uploaded by a photographer, while printed photos stopped being accepted there after 31 January 2026. Abroad, prints and citizen uploads are still possible. The Greek identity card appears in the process only as proof of identity: you show it, or its digital version in the Gov.gr Wallet app, when you apply.

Frequently asked questions

A printed photo is 40 x 60 mm without a frame. The digital file used in Greece is a JPEG of 1280 x 1600 pixels, a 4:5 ratio, up to 3 MB. Both must be colour photos taken within the last six months.

In Greece a professional photographer uploads the file to myPhoto and you approve it with a code. Abroad you can upload your own photo, bring a print or be photographed by consular staff where the equipment exists.

No. The Greek identity card matters here only because passport applicants must show a valid one, or its digital version, and from 3 August 2026 cards that fail Regulation (EU) 2025/1208 are no longer accepted for passport issuance.

The Hellenic Police procedure applies: passport offices in Greece and Greek consular authorities abroad receive applications, and the National Passport and Secure Documents Center issues the passport.

Not in Greece, where only a professional photographer can upload the myPhoto file. Abroad you can: upload your own photo to the consular platform, or crop it to 40 x 60 mm and have it printed on photographic paper at a photo lab, because home ink-jet and laser prints are refused. Do not retouch it.
