Indonesia visa photo requirements
The 2 × 2 in photo rules set by Directorate General of Immigration for the Indonesia visa, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Indonesia visa photo?
For an Indonesian e-Visa, upload a recent colour passport-size photo as a JPG, JPEG or PNG file of up to 200 KB on the official e-Visa portal; no pixel size or background colour is published. The visa on arrival requirement lists name no photo. For visas issued on paper by a mission, KBRI Washington asks for two passport-size colour prints on plain white, head 80% of the height, taken within 6 months.
Foreign nationals apply for most Indonesian visas online through the e-Visa portal run by the Directorate General of Immigration. The portal covers visit visas (index C for a single entry, D for multiple entries), the electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA) and temporary stay visas (index E) for work, family, study, investment, retirement or remote work. A temporary stay visa leads to an ITAS, the limited stay permit often called KITAS, which is granted when you arrive at the immigration checkpoint.
Online visa applications attach a recent colour photograph: the minister's visa regulation lists it next to the passport, proof of sponsorship and proof of funds. The portal does not give a print size, pixel size or colour, only that the photo is passport size and the file is at most 200 KB. Indonesian missions still issue some visas on paper and set their own print rules: KBRI Washington for diplomatic and service visas, and KBRI Den Haag for 60-day visit visas applied for at the embassy.

In the official words
Exact wording from the official sources, quoted because the details matter:
1 (one) passport-sized photograph (3 x 4 cm with red background)
Key requirements
- Recent colour photo with every e-Visa
Each visa type on the portal lists a recent or latest colour photograph among its documents, from the C1 tourist visa and D1 multiple-entry visa to the E23 work visa and E31 family visas. The E33G remote worker visa asks for a recent photograph.
- 200 KB file limit
The photo and the passport biodata page are each uploaded as JPG, JPEG or PNG, at most 200 KB. Neither the portal nor the Immigration FAQ gives pixel dimensions or a background colour for the photo.
- Visa on arrival: no photo listed
For the B1 visa on arrival you show the officer a passport valid for at least 6 months and an onward or return ticket. The Immigration FAQ gives the same list for the e-VOA, although an older FAQ on the portal mentions a passport-size photo, so have a file ready.
- Photographed again for stay permits
Extending an ITAS, extending a visitor stay permit and converting a visitor permit into an ITAS all include taking a photograph at the immigration office, once the online application has been accepted.
- Embassy prints: white, head 80%
For diplomatic and service visas, KBRI Washington wants two recent colour prints, passport size, on picture-quality paper, against a plain white background, taken in the last 6 months, with the head 80% of the image height from chin to top of head.
- Loose or glued: follow the mission
KBRI Washington says not to staple or affix the photos to the form. KBRI Den Haag wants the photo glued onto its visit visa form, without staples, tape or paper clips.
Do's and don'ts
Do

- Save the e-Visa photo as JPG, JPEG or PNG under 200 KB

- Glue the photo onto the form at KBRI Den Haag
- Plan an in-person visit to the immigration office when you extend a stay permit
Don't
- Do not upload a black-and-white photo
- Do not go over 200 KB in the e-Visa upload
- Do not staple or affix prints to a KBRI Washington form
- Do not use staples, tape or paper clips at KBRI Den Haag
- Do not reuse a print older than 6 months for a KBRI Washington visa

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Babies and children
The visa pages read set no separate photo rules for children, so a child's photo follows the adult rules. Child visas on the portal, such as the E31E child visa, list the same latest colour photograph, and the e-VOA can be applied for for up to 5 people at once.
A baby born in Indonesia to ITAS holders receives an ITAS from the nearest immigration office. The parents present the child's passport, the birth certificate, a guarantee letter from the sponsor and their own passports and stay permits.
Printed and digital photos
Which photo you need depends on the channel. For any e-Visa, you need a digital file only: passport size, colour, JPG, JPEG or PNG, up to 200 KB. The same file serves if the e-VOA form asks for one.
For a paper visa at a mission, you need prints. KBRI Washington asks for passport size, which its consular office defines on its travel document page as 2 x 2 in (5 x 5 cm), on plain white. KBRI Den Haag asks for a photo glued to the form without giving a size.
Older embassy rules are still copied around the web. The embassy in New Delhi once asked for a 3 x 4 cm photo with a red background through its own visa website, which no longer exists. No current official page read asks for red, for 3 x 4 cm or for 35 x 45 mm.
Where to submit the photo
Apply online on the e-Visa portal by choosing your passport country, the purpose of your visit and a visa type; the portal shows the documents for that visa before you start. Some visa types must be applied for by a company or citizen in Indonesia acting as guarantor. You pay by SIMPONI or by Mastercard, Visa or JCB card, and a download link for the visa is emailed to you once it is approved.
At an Indonesian mission, follow its own list. KBRI Washington handles diplomatic and service visas through an online form plus a diplomatic note, with the photos handed in loose. KBRI Den Haag takes 60-day visit visa applications in person by appointment and keeps the passport for at least 5 working days.
Once in Indonesia, stay permit extensions start online and finish at the immigration office for your area of residence, where your photo is taken.
How to get your Indonesia visa photo
- Check the official requirements. Read the official specification for the Indonesia visa: 2 × 2 in print, plain white for KBRI Washington paper visas background. Check the rules on pose, expression, glasses and headwear below.
- Take the photo. Follow the key requirements: recent colour photo with every e-Visa; 200 KB file limit; visa on arrival: no photo listed; photographed again for stay permits.
- Prepare a print or digital file. Which photo you need depends on the channel. For any e-Visa, you need a digital file only: passport size, colour, JPG, JPEG or PNG, up to 200 KB. The same file serves if the e-VOA form asks for one. For a paper visa at a mission, you need prints.
- Submit the photo with your application. Apply online on the e-Visa portal by choosing your passport country, the purpose of your visit and a visa type; the portal shows the documents for that visa before you start.
Indonesia visa photo FAQ
The portal asks for a passport-size colour photograph and limits the file to 200 KB in JPG, JPEG or PNG. It publishes no pixel dimensions and no print size. Use a recent photo: the visa regulation requires a recent colour photograph with each application.
The e-Visa portal does not name one. The only colour found on an official page is from KBRI Washington, which asks for a plain white background on printed visa photos. No current official page read asks for a red background for a visa.
The visa on arrival requirements list a passport valid for 6 months and an onward or return ticket, with no photo. The Immigration FAQ says the same for the e-VOA, but an older FAQ on the e-Visa portal lists a passport-size photo of up to 200 KB, so keep one ready.
The ITAS is granted at the immigration checkpoint to holders of a temporary stay visa. When you later extend it, or convert a visitor permit into an ITAS, the immigration office takes your photograph as part of the procedure, so you attend in person.
That format comes from an old visa website of the embassy in New Delhi, which listed one 3 x 4 cm photo with a red background. The website no longer exists, and no current official page read asks for that format. Online applications take a passport-size file instead.
It depends on the mission. KBRI Washington asks for two recent colour prints for diplomatic and service visas. KBRI Den Haag asks for a photo glued onto the visit visa form. Check the list of the mission where you apply.
JPG, JPEG or PNG, at most 200 KB. The passport biodata page is uploaded in the same formats with the same 200 KB limit, and the passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you arrive.
