Quick answer

What size is the Moldova visa photo?

The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks for one recent colour photo of 35 x 45 mm (35mm x 45mm) with a matte finish for every visa type it lists, from airport transit (A) to long stay (D). The e-visa portal, open only for transit (B) and short-stay (C) visas, asks you to upload a recent photograph. No official page sets a background colour, head size or file size.

Moldovan visas are handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova and through the e-visa portal. The ministry publishes a list of required documents for each category: airport transit (type A), transit (B), short stay (C) and long stay (D). Every list asks for the same photograph, so you do not need a different size for tourism, business, a visit or work.

The e-visa route is narrower than the embassy route. Only B and C visas can be requested online; A and D visas must be handled by a diplomatic mission or consular office. On the portal you register, return with your reference number, fill in the form and upload the supporting documents, among them a recent photograph. An approved visa is emailed as a PDF, and you present it printed, with your passport, at the border. The portal's information pages say nothing about pixel size or file size for the photo.

Key requirements

  • One size for every category

The ministry lists a photo of 35mm x 45mm for airport transit, transit, short-stay and long-stay visas alike, including employment (D/AM), study, family reunification and medical treatment.

  • Colour and matte

Most lists read "a recent mat, colour photo 35mm x 45mm". The Romanian version of the page says "color, mat", so the print should be in colour with a matte rather than glossy finish.

  • A recent photograph

Every list says recent, and the e-visa guide asks for a recent photograph. No maximum age is stated, so use a current likeness rather than an old print.

  • Upload on the e-visa portal

The e-visa application guide lists a recent photograph among the supporting documents you upload, next to the passport copy, itinerary and accommodation details. The guide sets no technical rules for the image.

  • Online only for B and C visas

Airport transit (A) and long-stay (D) visas are not available online. Apply for them at a Moldovan diplomatic mission or consular office, with a printed photo.

  • Nothing published on background or head size

The ministry gives no background colour, head height, glasses or headwear rule for visa photos. Its list gives size, colour, finish and recency only.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Use one colour photo of 35 x 45 mm for any visa category
  • Choose a matte finish for the print
  • Make sure the photo is recent
  • Upload your recent photograph with your passport copy on the e-visa portal
  • Keep your visa reference number from the confirmation email
  • Ask the mission before applying if you wear glasses or a head covering that you cannot remove

Don't

  • Do not use the 3 x 4 or 50 x 60 mm formats that Moldova uses for other permits
  • Do not choose a glossy finish if you are submitting a print
  • Do not use an old photograph of yourself
  • Do not expect an airport transit or long-stay visa from the e-visa portal
  • Do not skip the invitation if your nationality needs one issued by the migration inspectorate

Sample photos

How a Moldova visa photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 35 × 45 mm and background colour.

Correct
Open-mouth smile
Head tilted
Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

The ministry's visa pages publish no rule on glasses. The identity-card guidance of the Public Services Agency, which accepts glasses only for people who wear them permanently, applies to Moldovan citizens' identity documents, not to visas. If you wear glasses, ask the mission that will handle your application what it expects.

Headwear and religious dress

No rule on hats or head coverings appears on the ministry's visa pages or on the e-visa portal. Consular staff judge each application, so contact the mission in advance if you wear a head covering for religious or medical reasons.

Babies and children

Each applicant needs a photo of the same size. For several short-stay categories, the ministry says that for a minor the application must also carry the birth certificate and the passport of the legal representative.

Two situations apply. At an embassy or consulate you hand in a print of 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches), colour and matte. A digital photo can be cropped to that size and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter, asking for a non-glossy finish.

On the e-visa portal you upload an image instead. The portal's guide lists a recent photograph among the documents but gives no pixel size, file type or file size for it, so follow any message on the upload screen itself.

Where to submit the photo

Apply at a diplomatic mission or consular office of the Republic of Moldova, or online at the e-visa portal for transit (B) and short-stay (C) visas. The portal states that its only facilitation is applying without being present at the embassy or consulate.

Your passport must have been issued within the past 10 years and be valid for at least three months beyond the date you intend to leave Moldova. Nationals of states that must present an invitation issued by the migration inspectorate still need it when they apply online.

How to get your Moldova visa photo

  1. Check the official requirements. Read the official specification for the Moldova visa: 35 × 45 mm print. Check the rules on pose, expression, glasses and headwear below.
  2. Take the photo. Follow the key requirements: one size for every category; colour and matte; a recent photograph; upload on the e-visa portal.
  3. Prepare a print or digital file. Two situations apply. At an embassy or consulate you hand in a print of 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches), colour and matte. A digital photo can be cropped to that size and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter, asking for a non-glossy finish.
  4. Submit the photo with your application. Apply at a diplomatic mission or consular office of the Republic of Moldova, or online at the e-visa portal for transit (B) and short-stay (C) visas. The portal states that its only facilitation is applying without being present at the embassy or consulate.

Moldova visa photo FAQ

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists one photo of 35mm x 45mm (35 x 45 mm, 1.38 x 1.77 in), in colour with a matte finish, for each visa category from airport transit to long stay. It must be recent.

Yes. The e-visa application guide lists a recent photograph among the supporting documents you upload. It gives no pixel size or file size, so follow the instructions on the upload screen.

The ministry does not say. Its document lists give the size, colour, matte finish and recency of the photo but no background colour, so none can be quoted from an official source.

Matte. The ministry's English lists say "mat" and the Romanian version says "color, mat". If you print at a photo counter, ask for a matte finish rather than glossy.

Only transit (B) and short-stay (C) visas. The portal says airport transit (A) and long-stay (D) visas must be requested at a Moldovan diplomatic mission or consular office. An approved e-visa arrives by email as a PDF.

For visas it is 35 x 45 mm. The 3x4 format appears on the lists of the General Inspectorate for Migration for residence-related applications, which is a separate process from the visa.

Not for an e-visa, which you can request without being present at an embassy or consulate. For airport transit and long-stay visas you apply at a mission. Check the mission's own page for appointment arrangements.
