At a glance

Nigerian passport applicants upload a 600 x 800 pixel colour photo of up to 2 MB on a white background, with the head 50% to 69% of the image, then attend for biometric capture. Visitors applying for an e-Visa upload a white-background photo under 1 MB that the portal crops square. The ECOWAS card (ENBIC) asks for a passport photograph, but NIS publishes no size for it.

Overview

A Nigerian passport photo is a colour upload of 600 x 800 pixels and no more than 2 MB, on a white background, with the head from hair to chin filling 50% to 69% of the image height and no glasses, which the NIS portal checks against ICAO rules.

All three documents come from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), but each treats the photo in its own way. For a passport, the photo is uploaded on the NIS passport portal, where it is checked against ICAO rules and, in the portal's words, printed on your passport. You also supply passport-size prints endorsed by your guarantor and attend an immigration office or mission for biometric capture.

Visitors have two routes. The e-Visa is fully online, with a photo upload under 1 MB on a white background. Regular and residence visas start on the NIS visa portal and finish at an embassy, where you are interviewed and your biometrics are captured; missions such as the consulate in Atlanta publish their own print rules.

The ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC), rolled out in November 2025, replaced the manual ECOWAS travel certificate. You apply on the NIS ENBIC portal with a passport photograph and attend enrolment after approval.

Frequently asked questions

No. The passport portal wants a 600 x 800 pixel image of up to 2 MB, while the e-Visa portal takes an image under 1 MB and crops it to a square. Both ask for a white background.

Passport applications list passport-size prints endorsed by the guarantor, or by a parent for a minor. Regular visas applied for at a mission usually need prints too; Atlanta asks for two colour photos taken within 30 days. The e-Visa is handled online.

The Nigeria Immigration Service issues all three. Applications start on separate NIS portals for passports, e-Visas, regular visas and the ENBIC, and Nigerian embassies, high commissions and consulates handle enrolment abroad.

The ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC). NIS rolled it out on 28 November 2025 and said it replaces the outdated manual travel certificate with a secure biometric system.

NIS sets no millimetre size. Its passports page asks only for passport-sized prints, and the London High Commission's list gives no measurement either. What NIS does fix is the upload: 600 x 800 pixels, up to 2 MB, on white.
