Quick answer

What size is the Turkey visa photo?

If you can use Türkiye's e-Visa, you need no photo: the portal asks for travel document details and a card payment, and its guidance mentions no photo. A sticker visa from a Turkish embassy, consulate or visa application centre needs printed biometric photos on a plain white background, taken within six months. Most current mission checklists ask for 50 x 60 mm (5 x 6 cm); Shanghai and Kigali ask for 5 x 5 cm. Follow your mission's list.

Türkiye has two visa routes, and only one of them involves a photo. The e-Visa, run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at evisa.gov.tr, covers tourism and trade trips for eligible nationalities; some of them qualify only if they already hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit. You enter your details, pay by card and download the e-Visa, and the portal's checklist mentions no photograph. Each traveller needs a separate e-Visa, infants included.

Everyone else needs a sticker visa from a Turkish mission: people travelling to work or study, for example, or nationals not eligible for the e-Visa. You fill in the Foreign Ministry's online pre-application, then hand in your documents and photos at the embassy or consulate. In some countries the mission accepts applications only through authorised visa application centres. The Consulate General in Karachi, for example, sends all applicants to Anatolia Travel Services centres.

Los Angeles (2024), Karachi (2025) and Jeddah ask for 50 x 60 mm. Shanghai, announcing the new security stickers in 2014, asked for two 5 x 5 cm photos, and Kigali's list from 2022 does the same. Print 50 x 60 mm unless your mission's own checklist says 5 x 5 cm.

Key requirements

  • Check the e-Visa first

If your nationality and purpose qualify, the e-Visa needs no photo at all. It is valid for tourism and trade only, and the portal stresses that it has no connection with Turkish embassies or consulates.

  • Size set by the mission

Sticker visa photos follow the checklist of the mission that takes your application. Karachi and Los Angeles specify 50 x 60 mm; Shanghai and Kigali ask for 5 x 5 cm. Match the size on the checklist you are given.

  • White, patternless background

Los Angeles, Karachi and Jeddah all ask for a white background; Shanghai and Kigali say only biometric. Los Angeles adds that the background must be patternless, and that lighting should be neither too bright nor too dark.

  • Neutral, straight pose

The Los Angeles guideline asks for the head straight, not tilted or turned, a neutral expression with lips closed, and eyes fully open and looking at the camera. Hair must not cover the face.

  • Count your copies

Jeddah, Shanghai and Kigali ask for two biometric photos; Shanghai wants one of them attached to the application form. Karachi's 2025 checklist lists a single biometric photo for each visa category.

  • Visa centres in some countries

Where a mission works through a visa application centre, you hand in the photos there, not at the consulate. In Pakistan, the Karachi checklist says applications go solely through the authorised centres, and applicants attend in person.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Check e-Visa eligibility before arranging photos.
  • Download your mission's current checklist.
  • Use a patternless white background.
  • Print the size the checklist names, 5 x 6 or 5 x 5 cm.
  • Bring two prints where the mission asks for two.
  • Attach one photo to the application form if asked.

Don't

  • Do not buy an e-Visa through an unofficial website.
  • Do not use a photo older than six months.
  • Do not wear glasses, earrings or a hat for a Los Angeles application.
  • Do not smile or open your mouth.
  • Do not hand in a creased or damaged print.

Sample photos

How a Turkey visa photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 50 × 60 mm and background colour.

Correct
Open-mouth smile
Head tilted
Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

The Los Angeles consulate's guideline, which covers visa as well as passport and ID applications, says accessories such as glasses, earrings and hats should not be used. The other visa checklists we read do not mention glasses.

Taking glasses off is the safe choice for any sticker visa photo, since nothing then blocks the eyes or reflects the light. For the e-Visa the question does not arise: no photo is submitted.

Headwear and religious dress

Los Angeles lists hats among the accessories that should not be worn, and asks that nothing obstructs the face and that hair does not cover it. The mission checklists from Karachi, Jeddah, Shanghai and Kigali set no rule on headwear beyond asking for biometric photos.

None of the visa sources we read deals with religious head coverings. If you wear one, ask the mission or visa centre before you have the photo taken.

Babies and children

Children and babies follow the same photo rules as adults, the Los Angeles guideline says. On the e-Visa side, every traveller, including infants and children listed in a parent's passport, needs a separate e-Visa, but none of them needs a photo.

For a child's sticker visa, prepare the same number of prints at the same size as for an adult, following the mission's checklist.

The e-Visa is entirely digital and photo-free. After payment you get a download link by email; carry the e-Visa as a soft copy on a phone or tablet, or as a printout, in case the border system fails.

Sticker visas work on paper. The mission checklists we read ask for printed biometric photos; none mentions uploading a photo to the online pre-application. A digital photo can be printed at 50 x 60 mm or 50 x 50 mm at a photo lab, or on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter. In the US, the Los Angeles consulate also accepts 2 x 2 inch photos.

Where to submit the photo

Apply for an e-Visa only on evisa.gov.tr. The ministry warns that other websites charging a service fee are not endorsed by the Turkish government.

For a sticker visa, complete the online pre-application on the Foreign Ministry's consular portal, then follow your mission's instructions. Kigali asks applicants to book an interview appointment through the portal and apply at the embassy. Karachi tells applicants to attend an authorised visa application centre in person. Jeddah's consular section works by appointment.

Turkey visa photo FAQ

No. The evisa.gov.tr guidance covers your travel document, travel dates and a card payment, and does not mention a photograph. The e-Visa covers tourism and trade only, and each traveller, children included, needs their own.

For a sticker visa, usually 50 x 60 mm (5 x 6 cm): Los Angeles, Karachi and Jeddah ask for it. Some missions, such as Shanghai and Kigali, ask for 5 x 5 cm. Always follow the checklist of the mission handling your application.

It depends on the mission. Shanghai's 2014 notice on the new visa stickers and Kigali's 2022 list ask for 5 x 5 cm. The newer checklists from Karachi (2025) and Los Angeles (2024) ask for 50 x 60 mm.

Usually two. Jeddah, Shanghai and Kigali each ask for two biometric photos, and Shanghai wants one attached to the application form. Karachi's 2025 checklist lists one per category.

Better not. The Los Angeles consulate says accessories such as glasses, earrings and hats should not be used in visa photos. Other checklists are silent, so removing glasses avoids any problem.

At the Consulate General in Los Angeles, yes: its guideline says the 2 x 2 inch size common in the US is also acceptable. Elsewhere, use 50 x 60 mm or the size your mission names.

At an authorised visa application centre. The Consulate General in Karachi says applications are accepted only through Anatolia Travel Services centres, in person, with a white-background 50 x 60 mm biometric photo.
