At a glance

Türkiye's documents split into two photo groups. Turkish citizens bring a printed 50 x 60 mm biometric colour photo, taken within six months, for a passport, whether they apply at a civil registry office or a consulate. Visitors need no photo for the e-Visa, while sticker visas from missions take printed biometric photos on white, usually 50 x 60 mm and 5 x 5 cm at some posts.

Overview

A Turkish passport photo is a 50 x 60 mm colour biometric print on a plain white background, taken within the last six months and scanned at the counter, so there is no digital file to send and a print trimmed to 35 x 45 mm is not accepted. Two ministries share the work. The Ministry of Interior's population directorate, NVİ, issues passports and identity cards through civil registry offices in Turkey, and Turkish embassies and consulates take citizens' applications abroad. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs the e-Visa portal and issues sticker visas through its missions, some of which use visa application centres.

Nothing in this group is uploaded. A citizen's print is scanned at the counter, a sticker visa applicant hands prints to the mission or centre, and an e-Visa applicant sends no photo at all. The common mistake is a 35 x 45 mm print: it is the size of the photo window inside the passport, not the size to bring.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The consular FAQ gives the same 50 x 60 mm biometric photo, taken within the last six months, for the identity card. NVİ requires it from age 15; a younger child's card carries a photo only if requested or if it will be used as a travel document.

Because the print is scanned. The consular FAQ says it must be larger than the 35 x 45 mm photo area on the passport page for the scanner to detect it, and recommends 50 x 60 mm. A trimmed print can stall the application.

Only for a sticker visa issued by a mission. The e-Visa, for eligible nationalities travelling for tourism or trade, asks for travel document details and a card payment but no photograph.

At the consular section of a Turkish embassy or at a consulate general, after booking on the Foreign Ministry's consular portal. You must attend in person, and the consular FAQ says the passport is handed over at the mission.

The Foreign Ministry's consular FAQ lists two biometric photos taken in the last six months for applications in Türkiye and says one is enough abroad, while NVİ's passport page lists one. Some missions, such as the embassy in Stockholm, still ask for two, so a spare print is worth having.
